The following questions are NOT to be handed in, but it is essential to try them
before tutorial!
The questions with a red star are the “at least do these for now/start with these” absolute bare-
minimum questions during the occasional super-busy week.
Learning Objectives:
Sketch a curve given information about how x and y vary with time;
How to convert parametric equations to a Cartesian equation.
2) Match the graphs of the parametric equations x = f(t) and y = g(t) in (a)-(d) with
the parametric curves labeled I-IV. Give reasons for your choices.
3) Use the graphs of x = f(t) and y = g(t) to sketch the parametric curve x = f(t), y =
g(t). Indicate with arrows the direction in which the curve is traced as t increases.

Learning Objectives:
How to find the first and second derivative of a curve which is defined by
parametric equations;
Determine where a parametric curve has a horizontal or vertical tangent;
How to find the arc length of a curve which is defined by parametric equations.
1) Find an equation of the tangent to the curve at the given point by two methods: (a)
without eliminating the parameter and (b) by first eliminating the parameter.
x = 1 + ln t, y = t2 + 2; (1, 3)
2) Find dy/dx and d2y/dx2. For which values of t is the curve concave upward?
x = t2 + 1, y = t2 + t
3) At what point(s) on the curve x = 3t2 + 1, y = t3 - 1 does the tangent line have
slope 0.5?
