PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION SYLLABUS


AY: 2023 – 2024

Course Title Purposive Communication

Course Code Ge 03

Credit Units 3 Units

Course Description This course develops student’s communicative competence and enhances their cultural and intercultural awareness through
multimodal tasks that provide them opportunities for communication effectively and appropriately to a multicultural audience
in a local and global context. It equips students with tools for critical evaluation of a variety of texts and focuses on the power
of language and the impact of images to emphasize the importance of conveying messages responsibly. The knowledge, skills,
and insights that students gain from this course may be used in their other academic endeavors, their chosen disciplines, and
their future careers

Pre-Requisite

Vision: Gabriel Taborin College of Davao Foundation, Inc., a Catholic Educational Institution, anchored on the Spirituality of the Holy Family, envisions a

Three years after graduation, GTCD Hotel and Restaurant Management alumni shall:

1.) have advanced practical expertise in terms of laboratory activities and equipment in the field of hospitality management supported by the

Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs):
At the end of the course, the students must have:

1. Describe the nature, elements, and functions of verbal and non-verbal communication in various and multicultural contexts.
2. Explain how cultural and global issues affect communication.
3. Determine culturally appropriate terms, expressions, and images.
4. Evaluate multimodal texts critically to enhance receptive (listening, reading, viewing) skills.
5. Summarize the principles of academic text structure.
6. Convey ideas through oral, audio-visual, and/or web-based presentations for different target audiences in local and global settings
using appropriate registers.
7. Create clear, coherent, and effective communication materials.
8. Present ideas persuasively using appropriate language registers, tone, facial expressions, and gestures.
9. Write and present academic papers using appropriate tone, style, conventions and reference styles.
10. Adopt cultural and intercultural awareness and sensitivity in the communication of ideas.
11. Appreciate the differences between the varieties of spoken and written language.

I. POLICIES:

Good manners and right conduct in the classroom


1. Prayer: The class starts with an opening prayer and ends with a closing prayer
2. Greetings: The teacher and students greet one another

3. Attendance: 15 minutes late is considered absent, only valid reasons are acceptable to be excused from the class
4. Respect for Others: Avoid interrupting others while they're speaking or working.
5. Active Listening: Pay attention when the teacher or classmates are speaking.
6. Preparedness: Come to class with all necessary materials
7. Cleanliness: Keep your personal space and classroom area tidy and organized.
8. Technology Use: Use devices for educational purposes only during class time. Cellphones will be confiscated if
failure to do so.
9. Raising Hands: Raise your hand to ask questions or contribute to discussions.
10. Participation: Engage actively in class discussions and activities.
