Permissible Maximum Number of Battery Cells (Ncell_max)

Vmax = Maximum Nominal Voltage

= 112% of Vnom
= 120.96 V

Ncell max = Vmax ÷ Vfloat

= 120.96 / 2.29 Cells

= 52.82 Cells
Ncell max ≈ 53 Cells

Permissible Minimum Number of Battery Cells (Ncell_min)

Vmin = Minimum Nominal Voltage

= 49.62 Cells
Ncell min ≈ 50 Cells

The 54 number of cells recommended by [4] Section 3.2.10.2, are deemed appropriate for the
requirement of Black Range Project, since these are within the limit of minimum & maximum
permissible number of cells.

Minimum voltage for 54 cells after 6 Hours

= 54 x 1.85 V
= 99.9 V
= 92.5% of Vnom

Maximum voltage for 54 cells

= 54 x 2.29 V
= 123.66 V
= 114.5% of Vnom
Both values are within the Design Criteria range (Assumed -15 % to +12 %)

standing load, the charger shall be capable of supplying the normal standing load and
returning the partially discharged battery to a fully charged state within 8 hours.

The battery charger capacity is calculated in accordance with IEEE 946 as;

1.1 x Q
IBC (X) = LC +
T
= 45.38 A

Where;
LC (X) = Continous DC Load

The DC Distribution Board Short Circuit current would comprise of:
- Battery Bank Short Circuit current, plus
- Maximum current as supplied by the Battery Charger.

It is assumed that battery chargers have integrated shout circuit protection

devices that limit the current to the charger's maximum output current.

The selected Battery Bank of comprises of;

C10 = 200 AH
Vcell-nom = 2 Volts / Cell (Nominal)
NCell = 54 Cells

Maximum Output of Selected Battery Charger is;

Icharger = 50 A

Short Circuit at Distribution board is:

N x Vnom
ISC = Icharger +
(∑Ri + RC)

ISC (X&Y) = 3.40 kA

Note: Since Battery Banks and Chargers for both Set X & Set Y are identical, the Short Circuit
Current will be the same.

Where;
∑Ri = Internal resistance of battery block
= N x Ri
= 54 x 0.0005
= 0.027 Ω
RC = DC Resistance of cable
= 2 x RC/U x L
= 0.0052 Ω
Using Equation 5.3 (1) of AS 3008, the cable minimum cable cross section can be
calculated as:

ISC(X&Y)2 x t
S=
K2
w
S = 23.8 mm2

Where;
S = Conductor Cross Section (mm2)
ISC (X&Y) = 3,400 kA (from Annexure K)
t= 1 sec
K= 143 (Constant from Table 52, AS 3008
Cu, initial Conductor Temp = 30oC, final conductor
temp = 160oC)

Selecting the next higher cable cross section:

S(X&Y) = 35 mm2

Note: Since battery Banks and Chargers for both Set X & Set Y are identical, the Short Circuit
Current will be the same.
