Professionalism -Principles of Practice
All academic staff are required to read and sign the following
annually.
We believe that the major contributory factor of school
effectiveness is good quality teaching. Therefore, we wish to
develop the teaching staff by increasing their subject knowledge
and expertise, by developing their range of teaching strategies
and skills, by supporting each other and sharing good practice.
This can only be done by establishing standards, having high
expectations and ensuring effective training, coaching,
monitoring and performance management. Our ultimate aim is
to build commitment and professionalism. A teacher at Riyadh
Schools is expected to demonstrate consistently high standards
of personal and professional conduct. The following statements
define the behavior and attitudes which set the required
standard for conduct throughout a teacher’s career.
A Riyadh School teacher must:
1. Set high expectations which inspire, motivate and
challenge pupils
2. Promote good progress and outcomes for pupils
3. Demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge
4. Plan and teach well-structured lessons
5. Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs
of all pupils
6. Make accurate and productive use of assesment
7. Manage behavior effectively to ensure a good and safe
learning environment
8. Fulfil wider professional responsibilities such as child
protection
Teachers must maintain high standards of ethics and behavior,
within and outside school, by:
• treating pupils with dignity, building relationships rooted
in mutual respect, and at all times observing proper
boundaries appropriate to a teacher’s professional
position
• showing tolerance of and respect for the rights of others
and not undermining fundamental Saudi values

maintain the confidence and respect of their peers, pupils,
and the public in general.
• An individual's behavior, either in or out of the workplace,
should not compromise her/his position within the
school.
Dress and Appearance is professional:
Staff are required to dress professionally and according to the
policy requirements.Staff should consider the manner of dress
and appearance appropriate to their professional role which may
be different to that adopted in their personal life. This means
that adults should wear clothing which:
• promotes a positive and professional image
• is appropriate to their role
• Is culturally appropriate
Social Contact within the community is professional:
Staff should not establish or seek to establish social contact
with pupils or their parents. Any contact should be politely
declined. Any social contact should be recorded and
reported to the Principal.
Teachers limit Physical Contact:
• There are occasions when it is entirely appropriate and
proper for staff to have physical contact with pupils, but
it is crucial that they only do so in ways appropriate to
their professional role.
• A 'no touch' approach is expected. If this occurs, staff are
expected to self-report to record this.
• Some staff, for example those who teach PE and games,
will, on occasions, must initiate physical contact with
pupils to support a child so they can perform a task safely,
to demonstrate the use of a particular piece of
equipment/instrument or assist them with an exercise.
This should be done with the pupil's agreement.
