Essay: Why is literature a good springboard to teach English in the elementary grades?
Literary texts offer a rich source of linguistic input and can help learners to practice the
four skills such as speaking, listening, reading and writing, in addition to exemplifying
grammatical structures and presenting new vocabulary. It also gives a lot of knowledge about the
society and about the literature. It gives a chance for students to improve their writing skills,
speaking skills, reading skills, critical thinking skills and so on. There are many types of English
Literature books. But it is used for the improving of English language. From a didactic point of
view, storybooks can provide children with new information about the world, enrich vocabulary
and enhance specific language skills (in the classroom or at home), nurturing communication
between the storyteller (teacher, parent or other professional staff) and the listeners.
Teaching language through literature provides your students with tons of specific
opportunities to expand their knowledge of language and culture and experience personal
growth. Literature helps to develop the learner's linguistic performance because it arouses their
zeal and keeps in them an ever-ready inclination to read. Moreover, it helps the learners to
develop fluency and the ability to comprehend what is read. As most English language literature
is written for native speakers, it prepares learners for the types of language they will have to read
and understand in the real world. It encourages students to communicate with others, by sharing
their thoughts and feelings about the story. Literary materials, through the four skills, develop the
vocabulary of the learners. For instance, a teacher assigns a learner to pre-determined activities
like matching acronyms and words, on the insertion of novel words to complete sentences.
Literature has been proven as a great tool to approach English language and English
culture. It gives many new words, learning the words helps in the improvement of vocabulary in
language. Literature is a complex art. Literature encourages students to reflect on their own
personal experiences, feelings and opinions. At the same time of learning English, they become
more active, both intellectually and emotionally. Studying for an English Literature degree as an
educator, allows you to develop a thorough knowledge of literary history, theory, and criticism,
and enhances your understanding of a wide range of cultures and intellectual traditions.
