INTRODUCTION
M/s LAKHO INFRA PRIVATE LIMITED is planning for construction of ROB at LC NO.23-C/2-T.
The objective of this investigation was to study the engineering geo-technical properties of soil
both in field and laboratory and to conclude with the recommendations of the most efficient
foundation parameters that shall be adopted.
FIELD INVESTIGATION
The field investigation work carried out making 150 mm nominal diameter boreholes at various
locations required depth below the natural ground level in all types of soil Including laterite, highly
weathered/weathered gneiss using suitable approved method of boring including chiselling,
cleaning, providing casing pipe as required or as directed by the engineer.
Performing Standard Penetration Tests at every 1.5m interval and at every change of strata.
Collecting undisturbed/ disturbed soil samples at every 1.5 m interval and at every change of
strata. Recording of ground water table.
Transporting all the collected soil samples to the laboratory.
Wherever rocky strata is met before achieving the required depth, the boreholes as above are to
be further extended by core drilling in weathered/intact rock using hydraulic feed rotary drill and
double tube core barrel with diamond bit including collection of core samples, performing SPT at
locations where core recovery is less than 20%, maintaining continuous record of core recovery
and RQD, keeping the cores in wooden core boxes, transporting to laboratory, backfilling on
completion of the same, all complete as per specifications and instructions of the Engineer In
Charge.
Standard Penetration Test (SPT) at every 1.50 m interval and change of strata as per
specifications. Standard split spoon sampler attached to lower end of drill rods was driven in the
boreholes by means of standard donut hammer of 63.50 kg falling freely from a height of 75 cm.
The sampler was driven 45 cm as per specifications and number of blows required for each 15
cm penetration was recorded.
Undisturbed Soil Samples (UDS) at every 1.50 m interval & change of strata as per sampling
specifications, in thin-walled sampling tubes of 100 mm dia. and 450 mm length. These sampling
tubes after retrieval from the boreholes were properly waxed and sealed at both ends.
* However, the existing water table may rise in the post-monsoon period in general. Therefore, a water table at a
ground level has been adopted for calculation purposes.
SITE PLAN
LABORATORY TESTS:
The following laboratory tests were conducted to determine the engineering characteristics of
sub-soils:
Natural moisture contents were determined by oven drying method as per IS 2720 (Part II).
The results have been reported in result sheet attached.
Dry and Bulk density of soil strata were obtained using Shelby tubes in accordance with IS
2720 (Part XXIX). The results have been reported in result sheet attached.
Particle size analysis test by hydrometer method were performed in accordance with IS 2720
(Part IV) on the part of soil samples obtained after the sieve analysis. The results have been
reported in result sheet attached.
Atterberg Limits’ tests were performed in accordance with IS 2720 (Part V) and results have
been reported in result sheet attached.
Specific gravity tests were performed in accordance with IS 2720 (Part III Section1) and the
results have been reported in result sheet attached.
Triaxial Compression Test under Unconsolidated Un-drained (UU) condition as per IS: 2720
(Part-XI) were performed on the undisturbed soil samples obtained during the field investigation.
The results have been reported in result sheet attached.
Direct shear tests were performed as per IS 2720 (Part XIII), on the undisturbed soil samples
obtained during the field investigation. The results and the density of samples have been
reported in result sheet attached.
Consolidation tests were performed as per IS 2720 (Part XV), on the undisturbed soil
samples obtained during the field investigation. The result in the form of compression index
(Cc) is reported in result sheet attached.
GENERAL GEOLOGY
The Geological setup of the Jaunpur district comprises of Gangetic alluvium which was
deposited from Pleistocene to recent. It consists of inter bedded layers of sand, silt and
clay with occasional appearance of Kankar. These sediments are clastic in nature and
belong to middle to upper Pleistocene period of deposition by existing drainage system
overlying directly on Vindhyan group. The new alluvial sediments are confined to present
drainage system forming the flood plain deposit.
In Jaunpur the average annual rainfall is 987 mm. The climate is typical sub humid
punctuated by long and intense summer and cold winters. About 88% of the annual
rainfall is received from south-west monsoon. May is the hottest month with
temperature shooting up to 46.5 0C. With the advance of monsoon by about mid-June,
temperature starts decreasing. January is usually the coldest month with the
temperature going up to 5.60C. The relative humidity is highest during south-west
monsoon ranging between 55% to 82% with its lowest around 32% during peak
summer months of April and May.
The district is a part of Central Ganga plain, characterized by mainly two geomorphic
nits i) Upland region ii) Low land region. The average elevation of the land ranges from
60m.a.m.s.l in east to 95 m.a.m.s.l in the west. Based on the hydro geomorphic map of
the district by IRS-1A and LISS-II imagery the following units have been identified. Soils
of the district are mainly transported i.e. alluvial soil, comprising sand silt and clay in
varying proportions. The alluvial soils of the district are subdivided into older alluvial soil
and younger alluvial soil. The older alluvial soil occupies high land wherever, the
younger soils are restricted to marginal tracts only.
SEISMICITY
The results of lab tests and bore hole log charts of bore holes indicate that the strata at
the site is found to comprise of both cohesive as well as non-cohesive soil.
The cohesive type soil comprises of either silty clay soil of low and medium plasticity
and compressibility or clayey silt of low and medium plasticity and compressibility
belonging to ‘CL’, ‘CI’ or ‘ML’ and ‘MI’ group of IS classification.
However, the non-cohesive type soil is found to comprise of sandy silt ‘ML’ type soil
group of IS classification.
S.P.T. VALUES
The S.P.T. values recorded in the borehole: -
LIQUEFACTION ANALYSIS
Liquefaction is the sudden loss of shear strength of the loose fine-grained sands due to
Earthquake induced vibration under saturated conditions. Assessment of liquefaction
potential of foundation strata is made as per approach proposed by IRC: SP: 114 / IS:
1893 from the SPT data and peak ground acceleration likely to occur at the site as per
code. In this method, cyclic shear stress likely to be induced in the foundation strata by
earthquake is first evaluated. Next threshold cyclic shear stress, which is good enough to
cause liquefaction, is determined from SPT data and the empirical relations. Finally,
comparison of these two stresses is used in the estimation of liquefaction susceptibility of
the foundation strata. According to Fig.1 of IS: 1893 (Part-1)-2016 showing seismic
zones, the project site falls under Zone-III. The design for seismic forces should be done
considering the project site in Zone-III.
• For the present location of boreholes, soil have fine grained with medium to dense
compactness state and from the liquefaction analysis find out that soil is not susceptible
to liquefy.
