What is a Timed OBE and what

( ) Designed to test your ability to analyse, evaluate or synthesise knowledge, rather


than your ability to recall facts of information

( ) An Exam that allows you to consult reference material

( ) Can be completed in your own space

( ) Focus on higher level learning

( ) Problem solving and scenario based

( ) Typically require students to formulate, compare or contrast, analyse, synthesise, apply or


evaluate information, rather than simply remember it.

( ) Your knowledge, understanding and skills will be tested

2 How best to prepare and revise?

( ) Practice and/or formative assessments

( ) Ensure all reference materials are organised beforehand

( ) Identify key concepts, formulas and terms which are likely to appear in the exam

( ) Work out what material the exam is likely to cover

( ) Plan your work: think about how to organise and structure your answer - your noted will
make or break your exam

( ) Understand the making/assessment criteria that your work will be judged against

( ) Always ask for help if you need it

( ) Take on board feedback

3 Sitting an OBE

( ) Create your own exam conditions


( ) Organise your workspace so that it is comfortable and uncluttered
( ) Only have the notes and materials that you really need
( ) Make sure that you've eaten before you start
( ) Ensure that you know how long you have to complete the exam
( ) Don't be tempted to write too much. A concise and well-considered answer that uses
supporting evidence effectively is better than a rambling, unfocused response.
( ) Check you are meeting the requirements like word count, format, submission deadline,
where and how to submit.
( ) Self-assess before you hand in your work
