FUNCTIONALISM THEORISING
Both in the early days of sociology and today, the central issue in sociological analysis is to
explain the underlying social order of society in terms of social processes that promote
integration and solidarity. This was the key issue for Durkheim and it is also one of the major
issues of the contemporary functionalist perspective, especially as represented by Talcott Parsons
(1902-1979) and his followers. Social order here refers to the underlying sources of support for
the dominant institutional patterns of society. It encompasses the society’s shared values system
and ideas of morality and shared beliefs.

Origins and influence of Contemporary Functionalist Theory


The structural functional model comes from a variety of authors, but is most associated with
Talcott Parsons. Robert Merton is another well-known sociologist who provided some important
structural functional theoretical statements. All of these were sociologists who were from the
United States and spent most of their academic life there. As a result, this approach is often
associated with sociology in the United States.

The functional approach was developed from the 1930s through the 1960s in the United States.
Parsons studied Weber and Durkheim, and translated some of these into English. Parsons thus
became a major interpreter of these writers in America, and his interpretation may be considered
to have developed the influence of these writers in a particular way. Although a liberal within the
American context, Parsons used concepts and models from Weber and Durkheim to establish a
sociological approach, which countered the Marxian view.

This approach dominated American sociology from the 1940s through to the early 1970s, where
sociology and functionalism became more or less identical (Adams and Sydie 2001:345). This
meant that sociology studied the roles of institutions and social behavior in society, the way these
are related to other social features, and developed explanations of society in social terms.

General Overview of Functionalism theory


Many aspects of the functionalist approach to sociology are similar to those of other sociological
approaches, but with a particular emphasis on function, interdependence, consensus, equilibrium,
and evolutionary change. Some of these aspects are:
a) Macro: The focus of macro-sociology lies with institutions and structures existing in the
society as a whole. Functionalist analysis looks on social systems as having certain needs,
and society as a system of social structures (economic, legal, educational, gender
structures).
b) Function: The different parts of each society/social system contribute positively to the
operation or functioning of the system as a whole. For example, the economic institutions
ought to provide Goods and services, there must be some administration of justice, a
political system must exist, and some family structure must operate to provide a means to
reproduce the population and maintain social life on a daily basis.
c) Interdependence and equilibrium: Functionalism attempts to explain the relationship of
different parts of the system to each other, and to the whole. These parts usually work
together in an orderly manner, without great conflict. The different parts are usually in
equilibrium, or moving towards equilibrium, with consensus rather than conflict
governing the inter-relationships of the various parts.
d) Evolutionary change: While equilibrium, consensus, and static rather than dynamic
analysis are most common. Change tends to be orderly and evolutionary, rather than
revolutionary or with dramatic structural breaks.

TALCOTT PARSONS (1902-1979)


Introduction
Life: Talcott Parsons (1902-1979, United States) was the most important figure in the structural
functionalist school of sociological thought. He dominated sociology in the United States for
many years, coming into disfavor in the 1960 and 1970s. Parsons studied in England at the
London School of Economics, then at Heidelberg from 1925 to 1926. In England, Parson studied
the economics of Alfred Marshall; in Germany, he discovered the writings of Max Weber. At
Harvard, Parson was influenced by Piritim Sorokin (189-1968). Parsons became a professor at
Harvard in 1927 and stayed there until his death in 1979. In 1937, he published his major work
The Structure of Social Action. In 1949, he was president of the American Sociological
Association, and in 1951 published The Social System. These works remained dominant within
American sociology through the 1970s.

Much like Durkheim, “Parsons’ primary concern throughout his life was the problem of order in
society” (Adams and Sydie 2001:349):
 If individuals were really separate entities pursuing their self-interest, there could be any
order at all? Alternatively, how could there be anything but disorder?
 What basic functional requirements must be fulfilled for a society or any social system to
survive as a viable system? How are these functions fulfilled?
 What are the overall social consequences or effects of the widespread patterns of
behaviour on the larger system in which that pattern is involved?
These questions are basic in Parsons’ functional perspective. Thus, Parsons dealt explicitly with
the interrelationships among the individual personality, the social system and the cultural system.

From Social Action to Social system


Parsons’ earliest focus was comparable to that of Weber (Social Action) in its focus on individual
actions as the basic units of sociological analysis. Parson’s functionalist perspective on the social
system actually builds on the foundation of his earlier social action theory. Many major new
ideas were added over the years as Parsons gradually made the transition from social action
theory to social systems theory. He analyzed the social system as made up of individual’s social
actions. In his fist book “The Structure of Social Action” 1937, Parson’s analysis makes
extensive use of the means-end framework, and contends that;
a) Action is goal directed or has an end
b) Action takes place in a situation, where some elements are given while others are utilized
by the actor as means to goals.
c) Action is normatively regulated with respect to the choice of ends and means; i.e. the act
is seen as the smallest or most fundamental unit of social reality. The basic components
of the unit act thus are the ends, means, conditions and means. The means and conditions
of actions differ in that the actor is able to manipulate means in an effort to move forward
the goal. The conditions are the aspects of the situation over which the actor has control.
Ends: Parsons noted that while individuals pursue their self-interest and their own satisfaction,
which is not the sole concern of individuals. Rather, there is a strong measure of agreement
among people, people do get along with each other, and they cooperate with and help each other.
The wants and desires of people are not randomly distributed, but are socially derived. The ends
that people pursue are based on shared values and norms, and these are internalized in the
motivational systems of individuals.

Means: The manner in which particular ends are pursued is usually not the technically most
efficient manner. Rather, the means that people use are socially and morally regulated, with
views of right and wrong, proper and improper, and appropriate and not. Without the normative
regulation of means, society would be afflicted by chaos, anomie, and apathy- social disorder”
(Adams and Sydie 2001) Note also that these are carried out within a system of constraints, or
there are various conditions placed on individual action.

Action Systems
According to Talcott Parsons, there are many systems or action systems where “the parts are
connected” (Adams and Sydie, p. 350). A system is something that has a boundary, so that there
is an inside and an outside to the environment comprising the system. Examples of systems are
the social, cultural, and personality systems. Systems have interdependent parts, order or
equilibrium, and a tendency to maintain the boundaries and relations of the parts to the whole.
These could be the society as a whole, structures or institutions within society (economy, legal
system, religious institutions), or smaller subsystems (family or individual) that form part of
society. These are action systems in the sense that they involve social action, and each system
has certain needs or conditions that are necessary for the survival and continued operation of the
system. Systems also have goals that may be created because of needs and desires of members of
these systems. For example, a physical analogy to the systems of Parsons is a computer or a
water heater.

Parsons was primarily interested in the social system, viewing it as the preserve of sociology, and
examining social interaction and the relationships among individuals. A personality system,
concerning human motivation and orientation, underlies the social system. Individuals might be
motivated by culture and social factors, looking for approval in social relationships. Individual
personality was considered a combination of biological drives and culture, with actors being
relatively passive.
Above the social system is the cultural system, the system of patterned and ordered symbols.
While humans create it, this is the “social stock of knowledge, symbols, and ideas” (Ritzer, p.
247). This includes language and other forms of communication, systems of morality, and all of
the shared knowledge of people. Parsons refers to this as the cultural tradition, and argues that
elementary communication is not possible without “some degree of conformity to the
‘conventions’ of the symbolic system” (Parsons, 1951, p. 11).

Social System: the social system was Parsons’ main concern. This is society as a whole, or the
various institutions such as the family within society. Parsons’ definition of the social system is:
A social system consists in a plurality of individual actors interacting with each other in a
situation which has at least a physical or environmental aspect, actors who are motivated in terms
of a tendency to the “optimization of gratification” and whose relation to their situations,
including each other, is defined and mediated in terms of a system of culturally structured and
shared symbols (Parsons, 1951, pp. 5-6).

The basic unit of the system for Parsons was the status-role bundle or complex. These are
structural elements, and are not characteristics of the individual or of interaction. Rather they are
like the positions within the stratification model. A status is a structural position within the social
system, and a role is what the individual who has that status does. For example, brother or sister
could refer to a status, and there are certain roles that are generally associated with these statuses.
Note that these statuses need not be hierarchical as in the stratification model.

Within this social system, Parsons considered the needs of the system as important, and
individuals fulfilled certain system functions by taking on various roles as means of carrying out
the function of their statuses. Parsons discuss individuals as carrying out actions that maintain
order in the system. Socialization, education and learning in the child, and continued
socialization throughout life are the means by which the norms and values of society are learned
by individuals.

In modern society, there are many roles, statuses and opportunities for individuals to express
their different personalities. For Parsons, this is a positive feature of a social system, and a
flexible system of this sort is more able to maintain order. However, if people become too
deviant, there are social control mechanisms that either stop the deviance (ultimately at the legal
level). In most cases though, there are stronger mechanisms that the social system has to
maintain order. This is the socialization process, and the continued operation of the socialization
process through one’s whole life. Parson asserts there are mechanisms which, within limits, are
capable of forestalling and reversing the deep-lying tendencies for deviance to get into the
vicious circle phase which puts it beyond the control of ordinary approval-disapproval and
reward-punishment sanctions (Parsons, 1951, pp. 319-320). Note the self-regulating nature of
this social control mechanism that evolves.

Pattern Variables
Parsons’ general theory of social action stressed the subjective orientations that govern
individual’s choices. These choices are normatively regulated by shared values and normative
standards. In his book “Toward A General Theory of Action” 1951, he analyses the development
of various categories and classification for analyzing individual’s subjective orientation; the
pattern variables are the widely known and frequently cited. In general an actor’s orientation
consists of two basic elements;
a) The motivational orientation; refers to the actor’s desire to maximize gratification and
minimize deprivations.
b) Value orientation; refers to the normative standards that govern an individual’s
choices (of means and ends) and priorities with respect to different needs and goals.
Within this general framework, the pattern variables represent five dichotomous choices that an
actor must make, explicitly or implicitly, in confronting another person in any social action.

The pattern variables provide a means of looking at various forms that norms and social actions
can take, and their orientation. These can describe the nature of societal norms, or the basic
values that guide, and form the basis for decisions in, the personality system.

Perhaps these pattern variables can be thought of as a way that people do relate to situations they
face, the type of orientation they have, and how they are likely to interpret meaning in each
social action (See also Adam and Sydie 2001:350-53).

FUNCTIONAL SYSTEM PROBLEMS – AGIL (P)


Social systems have needs. In order to survive and continue, each social system or subsystem has
four characteristics that must be met. These are functional needs of the system, “a complex of
activities directed towards meeting a need or needs of the system” (Ritzer 1992:240). The first
two are necessary for survival and continued operation, while the last two are a means of
regulation of the social system. These functional needs can be remembered by the acronym
AGIL (Adaptation, Goal Attainment, Integration and Latent).

1. Adaptation (A), each system exists in an environment, and must be able to adapt to this
environment. In the process of adaptation, the environment is also affected and may be
adapted to the society. This involves mobilization of resources so that the system can
survive and that things can be done to meet goals of the system. In a family/household for
example adaptation could include obtaining economic resources – earning an income to
support the family.
2. Goal Attainment (G), each system has certain purposes associated with it. The goals of
the system must be defined, means of attempting to achieve these goals must be laid out,
and then these goals must be achieved. Within the social system, the polity (political
sphere and government) is an important aspect of this because it alters the goals for the
society as a whole, and “mobilizing actors and resources to that end” (Ritzer, p. 246). For
example, Makerere University as a system has the goal of teaching, research, and
community service. Within a family or individual systems; husband and wife, parents and
children are each statuses with roles for meeting family goals.
3. Integration (I); this is the means by which social relationships, and interrelationships
among units or groups, are regulated. By integration Parsons means the need to
coordinate, adjust, and regulate relationships among various actors or units within the
system … in order to kept the system functioning. Parsons thought that systems develop
automatic means of integration, and roles and organizations to help carry this out do
develop for example, in educational institutions, teachers carry out the roles of
adaptation, goal attainment and integration as part of their activities.
4. Latency (L) or pattern maintenance (P): This is the function of pattern maintenance.
Parsons refers to this as the cultural-motivational system (Parsons, 1967, p. 261). These
are referred to as latent because they may not always be as apparent as the A, G, or I
functions. The organizations and roles that perform latent functions can be regarded as
those that “furnish, maintain, and renew both the motivation of individuals and the
cultural patterns that create and sustain this motivation” (Ritzer 1992, p. 242). Parsons
refers to these as fiduciary, i.e. founded on trust. At the level of the social system, these
are schools, educational institutions, and the major institution that is concerned with the
latent function is kinship and family or other forms of personal relationships. Within this,
leisure, affection, love, sex, and friendship, can all play an important function.

The AGIL functions must exist at all levels, in society as a whole, and in each sub-system. In
traditional societies, most of these functions would have been centered in family and kinship
structures, and in local communities. As societies have developed, these functions tend to evolve,
with different institutions developing different functions, and with different functions developing
within each organization.

Assumptions of the Structural Functionalism Theory


 Society is made up of interdependent parts(institutions)-religion, education,
politics etc) that are all inter related or linked together , A change in one leads to
a change in the other parts of society. In order to have a proper working society,
equilibrium or stability must be maintained.
 There is a general consensus on values, members of a society must reach a
general agreement (consensus) on values and morality on order to achieve
stability and to have a proper functioning of the entire system or society
 Change is gradual and smooth process, it takes a long time and results from
variables such as population growth and improvement in technology- structural-
strain occur once there is rapid social change which causes social problems.
 The different social systems work towards maintaining social order, stability or
equilibrium which is a natural thing. This is achieved through the dual process of
Allocation and Integration. Allocation is the specialization (division of labour
and social positions) of each part which must work together (integration) with
other parts towards to create efficiency and harmony in society.
 Systems are generally static or move in a deliberate manner through cooperation
and interdependence which creates order, however, disorders occurs due to
conflict between the parts that make up society and therefore order must be
resorted.
 Systems have boundaries which may involve physical space, or time or distance.
Systems tend towards self-maintenance involving control of boundaries and
relationships of parts to the whole, control of the environment, and control of
tendencies to change the system from within.

PARSONS’ ANALYSIS OF THE FAMILY


For Parsons, the family serves two essential functions in modern society, (a) the socialization of
children, and (b) “stabilization of the adult personalities of the population of the society”
(Morgan, p. 27). These can be considered to be essential functions of society – primarily
integrative (I) and latent (L) – that create problems for society if they are not carried out. Too
often, the earlier, classical theorists had taken these for granted, and considered them to be
outside the scope of sociological analysis.

The father is the head of the family in that he represents the family unit, and the parents exercise
power over the children. This is for the children’s own good. Johnson notes that Parsons did not
“depict the father as dominating his wife and children but only as having power by virtue of
being their representative” (Johnson 1993, p. 124). As such, Parsons may have ignored the power
that husbands have over wives, especially when the different activities of husbands and wives
and the income differences are considered.

Parsons argued that the instrumental role should be carried out by the husband. In order to
survive, the family needed the income from the husband’s occupation, while the family also
depended on the wife’s expressive and integrative activity. This could involve attempts to
respond to the psychological needs of the husband and children, providing nurturing and warmth,
and taking care of the family and household needs. This was functional (a) for the whole family
unit, and (b) functional for marital solidarity because it prevented potentially divisive
competition between husband and wife

Parsons saw socialization within the family as having two different aspects: (a) it is the way in
which the individual internalizes the culture of a society or group, and (b) it is the process
whereby the individual learns and prepares to take on an autonomous role. Parsons is concerned
with the whole social system, and the functioning of that system, at the same time that he is
concerned with the family and the socialization process. Adults must be prepared for their roles
within society if the society is to continue functioning, and the socialization process achieves
this.

By carrying out the expressive role, the wife is just as necessary for the proper functioning of the
family. She not only cares for the children and socializes them, but also provides the emotional
support for her husband. In doing this, her role is also to provide for internal maintenance of the
family unit. She is linked to the wider society as well, through family and friends, and these
undoubtedly provide guidance for assisting in the socialization process. At the same time, strains
do exist in her role.

Parsons feels that the nuclear family, with this strict division of roles, is well suited to modern
industrial society. The differentiation by sex is functional for the individual, the family, and the
society as a whole. For Parsons, having definiteness of status is important, both for the
individuals involved, and for children who are seeking role models. Uncertainty and confusion in
sex role definition can be damaging to individual personalities and to the social system as a
whole (Morgan, pp. 30-38).

Criticisms of Parsons’ theory of the family: Parsons’ analysis of the family has been subject to
much criticism.
 The fixed nature of roles
 The static nature of the family
 The rigid division between instrumental and expressive roles
 The underestimation of the extent of power (usually male), and the inherently
conservative and consensus nature of this approach, all have been subject to severe
criticism.
 Many families today might be considered dysfunctional by Parsons, because they do not
perform the functions described by Parsons. Some have argued that confusion concerning
roles affect family and socialization negatively, thus weakening the whole society.
 The family of Parsons was a well established white family in North America in the 1940s
and 1950s, usually of middle class or perhaps working class origin and status. Black,
immigrant, poor or working class families, and even upper class families, are all
considerably different from the ideal types described by Parsons. It is difficult to know
how Parsons would have reacted to the changes in family and household structures that
have occurred in the last 20-30 years – decline in number of children, older age of
marriage and childbearing, women entering the labor force, single parent families,
blended families, same sex families, etc.

Parsons’ contributions: Parsons brought discussions of the family into the mainstream of
sociology, and developed an analysis of the social system that has the family as an essential
part, assisting in the latent and integrative functions. This is something that none of the
classical sociologists recognized as necessary.

The Conflict Theory (perspective)


The Conflict Theory is a macro-level theory designed to study the larger social, national,
regional, or global levels of sociological phenomena. This theory was founded by Karl Marx,
Marx was a witness to oppression perpetrated by society's elite members against the masses of
poor. He had very little patience for the capitalistic ideals that undergirded these powerful acts of
inhumane exploitation of the average person.
According to this perspective Society is marked by power struggles over scarce resources;
inequities result in conflict; social change is rapid, inevitable; and a natural state of society--
imbalance." (1997:18). In this perspective, society is viewed as marked by conflicts due to
inequalities of class, race, ethnicity, gender, age, and other divisions that produce conflicting
values. People are seen as being inherently good but are corrupted by society and its economic
structure; institutions are controlled by groups with power; 'order' is part of the illusion."
(1997:18). Inequality; the dominance of groups of people over other groups of people;
oppression and exploitation; competition between groups is the core source of conflict. The
conflict theory the following
Assumptions of this theory include:
I. Between individual or group, conflict emerges from having opposing interests or
competing for limited resources;
II. Struggle and conflict typically lead to some groups and individuals controlling and
dominating others, and that patterns of subordination and domination are self-
perpetuating; dominant groups disproportionately influence resource allocation and
societal structure.
III. Conflict is a basic element of human social life. The basic reason for conflict is that
individuals are motivated to act in accordance with their own interests. People pursue
needs, values, goals, and resources that they define as important or desirable.
Two possibilities that can lead to conflict: Different individuals or groups may
want different things. This is applicable to the family (e.g., children argue about
use of television, parents are children disagree about issues). Different individuals
or groups want the same thing, but there is a limited supply of the commodity.
Larossa's (1977) work on parenting, for example, suggests that men and women
compete for time. Polatnick (1984) suggests that men don't do housework because
it isn't profitable.
IV. Social order and social change result from conflict and struggle, resulting in inequality.
Social institutions legitimatize the power of some individuals or groups over others.
Social change results from conflict, it emerges from the crisis between human beings and
their society, between classes in a society and between groups.
V. Conflict is an integrative social force: social reality is dualistic, including forces that
promote social order and social conflict (Simmel, 1904, 1908/1955). Conflict can unify
people against a common enemy. Social classes have capacity to think and act against
situations that are not satisfactory to their existence.

Conflict theorists view social stratification to be based on conflict among classes and blocked
opportunity. Stratification is a scheme which underpins of dominance and subordination where
the elites are the ruling classes (also known as the bourgeoisie) while the others get exploited and
controlled (popularly known as the proletariats). Because of the fact that rewards are unequally
distributed, the interests of the wealthy and the social elite are reflected and not the needs of the
entire society to survive.
Using the point of view in the conflict theory, this inequality enables the powerful elite to
distribute the resources, legislate and enforce laws, and control the society's values. The elite
utilize these powers in such a way that it reproduces inequality. Those below the social class
comprised of the working class and poor experience what is termed blocked mobility. Likewise,
when the society is divided into strata, the society would less likely benefit from all the talents of
the citizenry. The inequality sets the limit on the life chances of those occupying the bottom of
the class structure, preventing their talents to be discovered and utilized, thereby wasting their
creativity and productivity.
Conflict theorists view the poor to be under attack by the society in a system of inequality in
which they are highly vulnerable. Though poverty is of no fault of theirs, the poor sectors of
society are still being blamed for being poor because of the beliefs being propagated by those in
the middle class and the elites. Whether one is using a perspective of class which is laddered or
from the perspective of class conflict, it can be seen that social classes is hierarchical.
Position of individuals in society means that access in getting jobs and obtaining status, power,
educational opportunities, and better income vary.
Conflict Theory assumes that those who have perpetually try to increase their wealth at the
expense and suffering of those who have not. It is a power struggle that is most often won by the
wealthy elite and lost by the common person of common means. The haves are those who
possess power. Conflict theory is especially useful in understanding a wide variety of social
phenomena: war, wealth and poverty, the haves and the have-riots, revolutions, political strife,
exploitation, divorce, ghettos, discrimination and prejudice, domestic violence, rape, child abuse,
slavery, and other conflict-related social phenomena.

Symbolic interactionism is a major sociological perspective (paradigm) that is influential in


many areas of sociology. It is particularly dominant in micro sociology. Symbolic interactionists
are concerned with explaining social actions in terms of the meanings that individuals give to
them. They also tend to focus on small scale interaction situations (micro level) rather than large
scale social changes.

This perspective has a long intellectual history, beginning with the German sociologist and
economist, Max Weber (1864-1920) and the American philosopher, George H. Mead (1863-
1931), both of whom emphasized the subjective meaning of human behavior, the social process,
and pragmatism. Symbolic interactionism is a distinctly American branch of sociology. It
developed from the work of a group of American philosophers who included John Dewey,
William I. Thomas and George Herbert Mead later, Herbert Blumer, Erving Goffman.

Symbolic interactionism is derived from American pragmatism and particularly from the work of
George Herbert Mead, who argued that people’s selves are social products, but that these selves
are also purposive and creative. He argued that people’s selves are social products, but that these
selves are also purposive and creative.

Herbert Blumer, a student and later a proffer at the University of Chicago who continued and
developed the ideas of Mead. He coined the term “symbolic interactionism” in 1937, and put
forward an influential summary of the perspective. That people act toward things based on the
meaning those things have for them; and these meanings are derived from social interaction and
modified through interpretation. His ideas were important in the development of sociology in
North America

The term “symbolic interaction” refers, of course, to the peculiar and distinctive character
of interaction as it takes place between human beings. The peculiarity consists in the fact
that human beings interpret or “define” each other’s actions instead of merely reacting to
each other’s actions. Their “response” is not made directly to the actions of one another
but instead is based on the meaning, which they attach to such actions. Thus, human
interaction is mediated by the use of symbols, by interpretation, or by ascertaining the
meaning of one another’s actions. This mediation is equivalent to inserting a process of
interpretation between stimulus and response in the case of human behavior
(Blumer1969, p. 180).
Key assumptions are:
 Human beings unlike animals are endowed with the capacity for thought and thought is
shaped through human interactions .
 In social interaction people learn the meanings and the symbols that allow them to
exercise their distinctively human capacity for thought
 Meanings and symbols allow people to carry on distinctively human actions and
interaction.
 People can interpret a situation and modify or alter their meanings of given symbols as
they interact with each other-Thus Humans are active participants in the shaping of their
behaviors through the social interaction process.
 The intertwined patterns of action and interaction make up groups and societies.
 People can create their own meanings ,while groups and societies are made up of
patterns of social actions and interactions.
 An understanding of human behavior human or conduct requires a study of nthe covert
(observable) behavior
 Human societies are humanized through social interactions.
Adams and Sydie (2001:504) summarized Blumer’s approach with three premises or
assumptions. These are,
a) Human beings act toward things based on the meanings that things have for them.
Human consciousness, the ability of humans to indicate something to themselves about
their surroundings leads to the possibility of meaning. The things extricated from the
setting may be gestures, sound, material things or what symbolic interactionists call
symbols. The individual takes note of these, has an understanding of them, notes them to
himself or her self, and makes decisions concerning how to proceed. i.e. the individual
interprets these things as meaningful symbols and uses the symbols in action.

b) The meaning of things arises out of the social interaction one has with one’s fellows
(others). Things do not have inherent meaning in and of themselves, but the meaning is
socially created, through experience with these as one interacts with other individuals
and groups in society. For example, if one does not know a particular language, the
sounds uttered by others speaking that language have no meaning for the individual;
they are merely sounds. Gestures and practices from other cultures, such as religious or
patriotic symbols and rituals, have no meaning for those not familiar with them.
However, practices, symbols, and gestures of the type frequently experienced generally
have meaning for the individual.

c) The meanings of things are handled in and modified through an interpretive process
used by the person in dealing with things one encounters. This can be contrasted with a
structural sociological approach. The latter may identify the same symbols as having
meaning, but the symbolic interaction perspective considers meaning much more
flexible. That is, through interaction with others, the individual understands the common
meaning associated with the symbols, but may modify and changes this, in a flexible
way. The same symbol may have different meanings in different settings, for different
individuals, and depending on how the individual interprets the setting. For example, a
familiar gesture from a friend may take on a different meaning if one feels somewhat
estranged from the friend than if there have been smoother relations. Particular words
and phrases may be appropriate in one circumstance and not in another – e.g. calling
people by their first name.

Blumer notes that structures do exist as “social roles, status positions, rank orders, bureaucratic
organizations” (Wallace and Wolf 1995:212) but that these do not determine behavior. Rather,
interaction is between people, not between roles or statuses, so that people form the direction and
content of these interactions. For Blumer, the person in a role has considerable flexibility and can
improvise within a setting. Interaction theory is thus concerned with plausible lines of action
characteristic of particular personalities. It is this flexibility and forms of interaction, rather than
the structural aspects of the settings, that interest sociologist who use the symbolic interaction
perspective.

This emphasis on symbols, negotiated reality and the social construction of society lead to an
interest in the roles people play. Erving Goffman (1958), a prominent social theorist in this
tradition, discusses roles dramaturgically, using an analogy to the theater, with human social
behavior seen as more or less well scripted and with humans as role-taking actors. Role-taking
is a key mechanism of interaction, for it permits us to take the other’s perspective, to see what
our actions might mean to the other actors with whom we interact. At other times, interactionists
emphasize the improvisational quality of r4oles, with human social behavior seen as poorly
scripted and with humans as role-making improvisers. Role-making, too, is a key mechanism of
interaction, for all situations and roles are inherently ambiguous, thus requiring us to create
those situations and roles to some extent before we can act
Symbols; human thought, experiences and conducts are essentially social (Mead 1934).They
owe their nature to the fact that human beings interact in terms of symbols, the most important
of which are contained in language. A symbol does not simply stand for an object or event; it
defines them in particular way and indicates a response to them (chair- sitting). Symbols
provide the means where by humans can interact meaningfully with their natural and social
environment. The meanings/symbols are human made and refer not to the intrinsic nature of
objects, but to the ways in which people perceive them.

The self (‘I’ and ‘Me’); Mead argued that through the process of role taking, individuals
develop a concept of ‘self’. By placing themselves in the position of others, they are able to
look back upon themselves. In order to have selves, individuals must be able to get “outside
themselves” so that they can evaluate themselves,, however people don’t experience themselves
directly, they can do so only indirectly by putting themselves in the position of others (Role
taking , Mead 1959). Mead traces the genesis of the self in 2 stages. Two stages in child
development i.e. play stage; Children learn to take the attitudes of particular others to
themselves’ play at being some one else’ e.g. daddy and mummy. Second stage is Game stage;
the child must take the role of every one else involved in the game, e.g. baseball.

Mead 1934, relates the self to ‘I’ and ‘Me’; I is the immediate response to an individual to
others. Is your opinion of yourself as a whole, it is your ‘self concept’, built up from the
reaction of others to you and the way you interpret those reactions. The ‘me’ is your definition
of yourself in a specific social role e.g. as ‘a good parent, lecturer’. These terms are used to
refer to one’s impulse for social action and the socially constructed self ‘me’.
 Significant others; refer to those individuals whose views, opinions and reactions i.e.
expectations contribute to and influence the conception we have of our selves.
 Generalized others; is the attitude of the entire community e.g. the attitude of the entire
team (baseball).The attitudes of the organized social group to which one belongs.

THE SELF AND THE WORKS OF EVRVING GOFFMAN

1. Introduction
One of the sociologists who used a type of symbolic interaction approach to examine human
interaction in social settings was Goffman. Goffman did not develop a theoretical approach that
would explain all parts of the social world, but primarily analyzed the interaction order – the
social situations or “environments in which two or more individuals are physically in one
another’s presence” (Goffman in Lemert 1997:235). These are the situations where we spend
much or most of our life – in face-to-face activities involving others, whether these be everyday
social situations, situations within organized structures (jobs, school), or unusual social situations
(accidents, weddings, funerals).

Adams and Sydie note, “Goffman’s work was the observation and analysis of individual conduct
‘as an attribute of social order, of society, not an attribute of individual persons” (2001:506). In
doing this, he was concerned with the individual and the self, viewing these as the “product of
social interaction” (Adams and Sydie 2001:507). Goffman excels at observation and description,
analyzing how people interpret and act in ordinary situations, and he provides guidelines
concerning how to examine social situations.

In attempting to understand this concept, we must first understand the idea of the ‘looking-
glass self’ developed by Charles Horton Cooley. He defined it as “some what definite
imagination of how one’s self – that is any idea he appropriates, appear in a particular mind and
the kind of self-feeling one has is determined by the attitude towards this attributed that others
mind” i.e. we imagine, how we appear to others, what their judgment of that appearance must
be, we develop some self-feeling e.g. pride or mortification, as a result of our imagining others’
judgment. This refers to how a conscious individual learns through anticipating possible
responses of other members with whom we interact. This requires defining the situation;
definition of the situation refers to an actor’s interpretation of an event or experience.

The most important work on the self in symbolic interactionism is “Presentation of the Self in
Every day life” (1959) by Erving Goffman. His conception of the self is deeply indebted to
Mead’s ideas, in particular his discussion of the tension between ‘I’, the spontaneous self and
‘me’, the social constraints with in the self. The tension is mirrored in Goffman’s work on what
he called the “crucial discrepancy’ between on all–to human selves and our socialized selves”
(the difference between what people expect us to do and what we may want to do
spontaneously).

In order to maintain a stable self-image, people perform for their social audience. Because of
the interest in performance, Goffman focused on dramaturgy, a view of social life as a series of
dramatic performance a kin to those performed on the stage. Every day life therefore constitutes
of places or situations where numerous little dramas take place. Some serious and other not in
which actors are involved (We as humans try to please others in our presentations, to maximize
that regarded from others).

DRAMATURGY (IMPRESSION MANAGEMENT)


Goffman’s sense of the self was shaped by his dramaturgical approach. Goffman’s approach is
sometimes called dramaturgy or dramaturgical theory in that he used theatre and drama as a
metaphor for how the individual presents his or her self and how individuals attempt to preserve
selfhood.

The self is not a possession of the actor but rather as the product of the dramatic interaction
between actor and audience. The self “is a dramatic effect arising… from a scene that is
presented” (Goffman 1959). Because the self is a product of dramatic interaction, it is
vulnerable to disruption during the performance. Goffman’s dramaturgy is concerned with the
process by which such disturbances are prevented or dealt with. To him, when humans interact,
they want to present a certain sense of the self that will be accepted by others, even as they
present that self however, actors are aware that members of the audience can disturb their
performance. The actor hopes that the sense of self that they present to the audience will be
strong enough for the audience to define the actor as the actor wants them to. He characterized
this central interest as “impression Management”. It involves techniques actors use to maintain
certain impression in the face of problems.

Following this theoretical analogy, Goffman spoke of a front stage; the front stage is that part of
the performance that generally functions in rather fixed and general ways to define the situation
for those who observe the performance. Goffman defines the front region of daily life as that of
managing the individual’s impressions in dealings with other. That is, a large part of what
individuals do in face to- face encounters is impression management i.e. ensuring that the in
image given to others in an encounter is consistent with the role or impression that the
individual wishes to convey.
Two aspects arise, i.e. the setting and the personal front.
 The setting refer to the physical scene that ordinarily must be there if the actors are
to perform e.g. a surgeon requires an operation room, a taxis driver a cab.
 The personal front consists of those items of expressive equipment that the audience
identifies with the performer and expect them to carry with them into the setting.eg a
surgeon is expected to dress in a medical gown.

Goffman approached the front, that the front tends to become institutionalized and so “a
collective representation” arise about what is to go on in certain front. The most interesting
insight lies in the domain of interaction. He argued that because people generally, try to present
an idealized picture of themselves in their front- stage performance, inevitably they feel that
they must hide things in their performance.

Another aspect of dramaturgy in the front is that actors try to convey the impression that they
are closer to the audience than they actually are. Actors have to be sure that their audience are
segregated so that the falsity of the performance is not discovered. Actors try to make sure that
all parts of any performance blend.
 (think about The “secret society” or “team”)
The back stage; where facts suppressed in the front stage or various kinds of informal actions
may appear. A back stage is usually adjacent to the front stage, but it is also cut off from it. The
back stage or region is what goes on behind the scene, as the individual prepares and practices
impression management. If the individual is aware of the situation, the impressions are likely to
be well developed and portrayed to others.

Performers can reliably expect no member s of their audience to appear in the back stage. A
performance is likely to become difficult when actors are unable to prevent the audience from
entering their back stage. Example a lecturer’s office is a front stage, when students visit, back
stage when students leave.

In general, impression management is oriented to guarding against a series of unexpected


actions e.g. unintended gestures. Goffman was interested in the various methods of dealing with
such problems. This he suggested the following;
1. Fostering high in-group loyalty.
a) Preventing the members (actors) from identifying with the audience
b) Changing audience periodically so that they don’t become knowledgeable about the
performer
2. Various forms of dramaturgical discipline
a) Having the presence of mind to avoid slips
b) Maintaining self-control
c) Managing the facial expression and verbal tone of one’s performance
3. The audience have a stake in successful impression management by the actor or team of
actors;
a) Giving great interest and attention to it
b) Avoiding emotional out bursts

ROLE DISTANCE
Another example of Goffman’s approach is his examination of roles and role distance.
Goffmann notes that
A status is a position in some system or pattern of positions and is related to the other
positions in the unit through reciprocal ties, through rights and duties binding on the
incumbents. Role consists of the activity the incumbent would engage in where he to acts
solely in terms of the normative demands upon someone in his position. Role in this
normative sense is to be distinguished from role performance or role enactment, which is
the actual conduct of a particular individual while on duty in his position (Encounters, p.
85).

Goffman defines role distance as “this ‘effectively’ expressed pointed separateness between the
individual and his putative (commonly accepted) role”. That is, “the individual is actually
denying not the role but the virtual self (essence of self) that is implied in the role for all
accepting performers”. Goffman notes that while mastering riding the merry-go-round horse can
be accomplished very easily and at a young age, “the task of expressing that it [the
developmental task] is not [a challenge] continues for a long time to be a challenge and remains
a full necessity.” As well, “the immediate audiences figure very directly in the display of role
distance” (p. 109). Goffman further notes two ways of establishing role distance: (i) isolating
oneself as much as possible for the situation, or (ii) projecting a childish self.

Conclusion
The real strength of Goffman’s work lies in his ability to illustrate some of the key
characteristics of symbolic interactionism as a theory. It shows how similarities can be found in
settings with different contexts. Some institutions rather than encouraging creativity, only help
to mortify the self, i.e. they take a way the actors self identity and demean the individual to the
extent that the actor remains in a sense of denial.
Thus, society is an interlocking set of interactions between individuals based on actors’
perception and expectations of each other. In other ward, the nature of the social world
ultimately depends on the shared definitions of roles and identities constructed through
interaction. Both the self and society should be essentially flexible (fluid) and adaptable (we
give meaning to the social world through our actions)

CRITIQUES
1. Interaction in a vacuum; Interactionist have often been accused of examining human
interaction in a vacuum. They focus on small-scale face-to-face interactions with little
concern for its historical or social setting. They have concentrated on particular situation and
encounters, with little reference to the historical events leading up to them or the wider social
framework in which they occur.

2. The origin of norms, Symbolic interactionism provides a corrective to the excesses of


societal determinism; many critics have argued that it has gone too far in this direction.
Although they claim that action is not determined by structural norms, interactionists do
admit the presence of such norms. Nevertheless, they tend to take them as given rather than
explaining their origin. William Skidmore (1975), interactionist largely fail to explain , “why
people consistently choose to act in given ways in certain situations, instead of in all the
other ways they might possibly have acted”.

3. In stressing the flexibility and freedom of human action, interactionists tend to down play the
constraints on actions. To Skidmore, this is because “Interactionism consistently fails to give
an account of social structure”. It fails to adequately explain how standardized normative
behavior comes about and why members of society are motivated to act in terms of social
norms.

4. The source of meanings, Interactionist’s failure to explain the sources of the meaning to
which they attach such importance. Interactionism provides little indication of the origins of
the meaning in terms of which individuals are labeled by. Critics argue that such meanings
are not spontaneously created in interaction situations; instead they are systematically
generated by the social structure.

5. Interactionism and American culture. Symbolic interactionism is a distinct American branch


of sociology and so this partly explains its shortcomings. Thus Leon Shaskolsky (1970) has
argued that, Interactionism is largely a reflection of the cultural ideals of American society.”
Symbolic interactionism has its roots deeply imbedded in the cultural environment of
American life and its interpretation of society is in a sense a “looking glass” image of what
that society purports to be.

6. Symbolic interactionists are often criticized by other sociologists for being overly
impressionistic in their research methods and somewhat unsystematic in their theories. These
objections, combined with the fairly narrow focus of interactionist research on small-group
interactions and other social psychological issues, have relegated the interactionist camp to a
minority position among sociologists, although a fairly substantial minority.
