1. INTRODUCTION
The objectives of the vibration study are to control the following aspects of AKPO FPSO
topsides design:
The structural aspect (structure of the Modules including Vibrating equipment) is checked
and corrective actions on the supporting decks are performed when vibration problems
occur, in order to reach HSE objectives.
Results of Factory Acceptance Tests on vibrating pieces of equipment are also presented.

Vibration control philosophy has to be applied to rotating machines and supporting decks.
To comply with vibration requirements, vibration control shall be performed throughout all
phases of the project, including purchase, supply of equipment, and detailed engineering.
• The equipment dynamic forces shall be taken into account in the design of the
equipment skid and supporting deck. Coincidence between resonance frequencies
of the equipment skid, supporting deck and excitation frequencies shall be avoided.
The present vibration analysis deals with step 5 of the vibration control philosophy flow
chart. This step consists in validating the topside structures from a dynamic point of view,
around the main Vibrating equipment (supporting decks) and computing cartographies
related to human exposure all over concerned Modules (supporting decks and controlled
areas).

2. MECHANICAL ASPECT
• Most critical equipment are classified in the “vibrating” equipment list (LEVEL 1):
on these machines, a detailed computation analysis is performed.
• Other equipment are classified in the complementary equipment list (LEVEL 2 - for
equipment with rated power > 30 kW): a simplified analysis is performed on these
machines and is presented in §2.6.
The process to issue the “vibrating” equipment list (for LEVEL 1) is developed in the
following chart (Figure 3) :

The piping static study was performed before piping network vibration analysis and all
necessary supports were implemented, from a static point of view in order to avoid
offshore piping damages.
The objective of the piping vibration study of TOTAL AKPO FPSO Project is to ensure that
the dynamic behaviour of the inlet/outlet piping of the centrifugal compressors is
acceptable.
For AKPO vibrating machines including important rigid inlet/outlet pipes (centrifugal
compressors, the verification of piping vibration design consists in performing a modal
calculation in order to avoid coincidence between piping resonance frequencies and main
excitation frequency (25 Hz). For each concerned pipe, TECHNIP existing static FEM (Finite
Element Model) is used (Caesar software).
Moreover, relevant dynamic boundary conditions are added in the FEM, according to
support characteristics and measurement results on similar structures (VIBRATEC
database).
The pipe resonance frequencies close to equipment main excitation frequency are then
computed and the results are analyzed.
The acceptance criterion is no global mode around the frequency range of ± 20 % of each
excitation frequency below 30 Hz.
From a dynamic point of view, taking into account the static design, no piping network
global mode shape was computed close to excitation frequency; only piping set local mode
shapes were highlighted.
Moreover, according to VIBRATEC and TECHNIP experience, there are generally no problem
of vibration on centrifugal compressor piping network. If problems of vibration occur on-
site, light structural modifications enable to reduce vibration levels (addition of
supplementary support, …).

NB : From a general point of view, a detailed piping dynamic analysis would require
following steps :
a) Finite element modelling of the pipe with adequate boundary conditions, for
example :
• Characteristics of pipe supports,
• Stiffnesses of structure supporting piping fixation points,
• Stiffnesses of piping extremities (inlet / outlet flanges of machines and / or
tanks, including influence of supporting structures / skid / floors, …)
b) Theoretical modal analysis in order to point out pipe portion presenting resonances
close to exciting frequencies.
c) Estimation of excitations :
• Flow induced excitation estimated from measurements and / or database
and / or computations according to pipe geometry and flow characteristics
(quite difficult to estimate),
• Machine induced excitation at connecting flanges for example estimated
from machine dynamic behaviour (computed or measured).
d) Estimation of piping modal damping taking into account piping structure and
supports characteristics (measurement database).
e) Dynamic response computation (harmonic or transient response) with estimation of
resulting displacements, stresses and transmitted forces on supports.
This complete technical approach is not requested by Company; moreover it would not be
realistic to perform such calculations for all main pipes. Only most critical pipes could be
concerned. Nevertheless, according to AKPO project technical enquiry, only step a) and
step b) (theoretical modal analysis) are performed.

3. HSE ASPECT
The existing “SACS” finite element models (FEM) of each concerned topsides module are
used. Primary structure was checked according to the existing drawings. Secondary
structure was only modelled at levels where “vibrating machines” are located. References
of structure drawings used for FEM are listed in Table .
The combined load cases “96” (operating condition ; Gravity + Live Loads without future
equipment) were taken into account according to contingency factors of each elementary
load case, as detailed in topside “SACS” files.

• Boundary conditions
All Topside modules rest on AKPO FPSO integrated deck by the mean of four neoprene
pads.
For static studies, Figure 4 presents the restrained displacements at neoprene pads of each
module.
For other analyses (without restrained displacements), following stiffnesses are used for
the neoprene pads :
• vertical stiffness about 2800 kN/mm (~ 2.8 109 N/m),
• horizontal stiffness about 7 kN/mm (~ 7 106 N/m),
X
FPSO center side
However, the pad stiffnesses do not influence the dynamic behaviour of the topsides
modules since the displacements at each vertical pillar extremity of each module,
generated by vibrating equipment, are insignificant. The dynamic transmitted forces are
negligible compared to the friction forces (no sliding). So, the boundary conditions chosen
for the connection between AKPO integrated deck and the topsides modules are the
followings: all three translations are blocked and all three rotations are free.
Remark :
If we consider the two following configurations for the boundary conditions :
• the “neoprene pads” stiffnesses,
• supported boundary conditions at each connection between the topside modules
and AKPO integrated deck : three translations are blocked and three rotations are
free,
the dynamic computation shows that the dynamic behaviour of the topside module decks
are almost the same in the frequency range of interest: the difference between computed
resonance frequencies is lower than 1 Hz.

Horizontal and vertical dynamic stiffnesses of the concerned module floors are computed
at some points corresponding to the fixation points of each vibrating machine.
In the case of vibrating machines connected to the supporting floor by means of AVMs, all
of the six “suspension resonance frequencies” have to be beyond H0.5 (half of the machine
rotating frequency) in order to avoid modal amplification. Moreover, supporting floor
vertical dynamic stiffnesses have to be 20 times higher than AVM stiffnesses in order to
obtain a good vibration filtration.
Modal bases are computed between 8 Hz and 80 Hz. The aim of these computations is to
check if resonance frequencies of machine skids and/or the supporting floors, are not too
close to the vibrating machines main excitation frequency H1, in order to avoid modal
amplification and to minimise vibration transmitted to supporting floor.
Structure modifications are proposed each time a resonance of the vibrating equipment
skid and/or module deck may generate high vibration levels.

Once module decks supporting vibrating equipment are validated and the modal basis
criterion respected, a vibration cartography is performed to predict vibration levels on
concerned floors.
Only vibration levels due to the main excitations of vibrating equipment (H1) are computed
all over the concerned module decks.
If unacceptable levels of vibration are computed, structure modifications are proposed and
checked by calculation.
When simplified FEM of vibrating machines are added to Module FEM, it is not to check the
dynamic behaviour of the vibrating machines, but only to obtain relevant dynamic
behaviour results on Module floors.

A simplified FEM is performed using beam elements according to skid drawings and VDS
fulfilled by FLOWSERVE.
The Cooling Water Recirculation Pumps (CWRP) are rigidly fixed on the main deck of
Module P1, by four connecting points. Calculation are performed with “initial connecting
point configuration” (4 connecting points instead of 6) in order to be conservative :
velocity levels induced on the supporting floor with 4 connecting points are higher than the
velocity levels induced on the supporting floor with 2 supplementary connecting points
between equipment and supporting floor.
All data used to build the Finite Element Model (FEM) of the machine are described in
Table 4.

According to initial design, the calculated dynamic stiffnesses of the main deck, under
WIBPs, are the followings :
• horizontal dynamic stiffnesses are higher than 5.108 N/m (close to 25 Hz – H1 excitation
frequency) ; that situation is satisfactory.
• vertical dynamic stiffnesses vary from 5.107 to 1.108 N/m (close to 25 Hz – H1 excitation
frequency) which is lower than the recommended vertical deck stiffness (108 N/m).
Deck reinforcement under WIBP machines are defined in order to improve vertical deck
stiffnesses (see Paragraph 3.4.4).

The calculated dynamic stiffnesses of the main deck, under WIPs, are acceptable since :
• horizontal dynamic stiffnesses are higher than 2.109 N/m (close to 25 Hz) ,
• average vertical dynamic stiffnesses are around 4.108 N/m (close to 25 Hz) which is
close to 5.108 N/m (recommended vertical deck stiffness for a such piece of
equipment).
Remark : a ratio of 10 to 20 between vertical deck stiffness and vertical AVM stiffness is
recommended in order to have good vibration filtration. This recommendation is
respected as vertical stiffness of each AVM is around 2.107 N/m (see Table 16).

o WIP
The computed modal basis of the main deck, shows that there is no critical “global” mode
close to the main excitation frequency (H1 = 25 Hz).
At H1 = 25 Hz, taking into account the vibration levels induced by WIBPs and WIPs, limit L3
is respected all over the main deck : there is no time restriction for human exposure.
The dynamic behaviour of Module P2 main deck is acceptable with regard to vibrations
limits allowable for human exposure.

No global mode of the supporting floor is computed in the frequency range of interest

Horizontal Y 0.7 < 5.627 < 16.9
Vertical Z 2.08 < 2.082 < 6.3
Table 21 : Vibration cartography results – highest computed vibration response
Presented velocity vibration levels in Table 21 and Table 22 do not take into account levels
at the borders of module P3.
Mode shapes which are at the origin of these vibration levels are principally due to local
modes of the secondary frame. These mode shapes are not precisely computed because of
the mass hypothesis (uncertainty regarding contingency factors, …) : associated computed
velocity levels are not relevant, so no structural modification is proposed to reduce these
levels.
Consequently, there is no time restriction for human exposure on main deck of Module P3.

The calculated dynamic stiffnesses of module P3 main deck at Main Power Generator
connecting points are:
Reminder : the three mounts between the MPGs and the supporting deck have dynamic
vertical stiffnesses from 108 N/m to 5 108 N/m, whereas the supporting deck average
dynamic stiffnesses in the vertical axis is around 109 N/m. From a dynamic point of view,
no filtration will occur under ≈ 200 Hz, as the mount dynamic stiffness is not 10 to 20
times lower than the supporting deck dynamic stiffness.
In the frequency range of interest [20 – 30 Hz], only local modes or high orders bending
modes of the supporting floor are computed. There is no critical “global” mode close to
the main excitation frequency (H1 = 25 Hz).
Close to H1 = 25 Hz, taking into account the vibration levels induced by MPGs, limit L3 is
respected all over the main deck : there is no time restriction for human exposure.
However, high vibration levels are computed on the borders of the main deck, due mainly
to secondary framing beams local modes (not computed precisely because of mass
hypothesis, not relevant).

To remove main deck modes and to increase dynamic stiffnesses, a solution to cure this
dynamic problem is applied (described in Figure 90) : these modifications allow to reduce
vibrations levels in the “green” area but do not allow to remove main deck modes out of
the frequency range of interest.

• For the pieces of equipment 5 GX 1930 A and B (Subsea Methanol Injection Pumps),
vibration cartographies are computed for the most unfavourable configurations (at
frequencies where excitation forces are maximum and / or when excitation
frequencies are located close to a global resonance of supporting floor). Results are
presented for the highest computed response on main deck supporting floor.
• Vibration cartographies are not computed for excitation higher than H3 pump
(values not provided by the Vendor) because at these high frequencies, only local
modes may be excited.

AVM’s stiffnesses
Figure 111 : Vertical dynamic stiffnesses near the fixation points of 5 GX 8310 C/D
(in N/m)
Remark : a ratio of 10 to 20 between vertical deck stiffness and vertical AVM stiffness has
to be respected in order to have good vibration filtration.
Although the main deck is as stiff as recommended along the vertical axis, compared to the
AVM’s vertical stiffness (≈ 1.6 107 N/m), the ratio is higher than 10; the main deck stiffness
is still acceptable.

The computation of the modal basis shows that only “local” modes are calculated in the
frequency range of interest [ 45 – 55 Hz] (an example is shown Figure 112) and that
equipment is well isolated (no interaction between equipment and floor at 50 Hz).
According to these results, the dynamic characteristics of module P8 main deck are
acceptable around 50 Hz.

The calculated dynamic stiffnesses of module P8 main deck at Crude COOP Pumps
connecting points are satisfactory:
The computed modal basis of the main deck shows that there is no critical “global” mode
close to the main excitation frequency (H1 = 50 Hz).
• Vibration cartographies at H1 = 50 Hz
At H1 = 50 Hz, taking into account the vibration levels induced by the four Crude Oil

over the main deck : there is no time restriction for human exposure.

At H1 = 25 Hz, taking into account the vibration levels induced by HWCPs, limit L3 is

The calculated dynamic stiffnesses of module S5 main deck at Crude Recirculation Pumps
connecting points are:
The computed modal basis of the main deck shows that there is no critical “global” mode
close to the main excitation frequency (H1 = 50 Hz).
• Vibration cartographies at H1 = 50 Hz
Close to H1 = 50 Hz, taking into account the vibration levels induced by CRPs, limit L3 is

The modal basis is computed in the frequency range of interest [20 – 30 Hz]. This
computation shows some bending modes of upper deck primary beams near the equipment.
As shown in Figure 154, a vertical bending mode located between the two HP compressors
is computed at 23.7 Hz. HP compressor skids are not connected to this primary beam and
this mode does not involve THERMODYN machines, so no modification is needed.
As shown in Figure 155, a vertical bending mode located near the equipment motor side is
computed at 26.5 Hz. No equipment is connected to this primary beam and this mode does
not involve THERMODYN machines, so no modification is needed.

Harmonic response is computed at 23.7 Hz, corresponding to the “local” mode shown in
Figure 154. As explained in paragraph 3.2.3.1, this mode will be excited in order to be
conservative, the two HP gearbox excitation forces are set in opposite phase.
Figure 157 to Figure 159 present vibration cartographies along each axis.
Taking account of all dynamic forces of MP and HP compressor components, the computed
velocity levels along all axis are below the acceptable velocity levels.
Table 42 and Table 43 compare these highest computed vibration levels to the acceptance
criteria.
Remark : The computed velocity levels at the technical rooms connecting points on the
supporting floor are below limit L4 (operators working continually in this area). The
criterion is fulfilled at the technical rooms connecting point on the supporting floor; it is
up to HHI to check the design inside the technical room in order to avoid vibration
amplifications.

According the modified design, Figure 180 and Figure 181 present global modes of the main
deck, computed in the frequency range of interest [1, 26 Hz].
Two main global modes of the main deck under the SMI pump are computed :
• a first bending mode (3.2 Hz),
• a second bending mode (10.7 Hz).
According the modified design, no supporting floor global mode (only equipment modes)
are computed close to 25 Hz.

vibration cartographies are computed for the most unfavourable configurations (at
frequencies where excitation forces are maximum and / or when excitation

presented for the highest computed response on main deck supporting floor.
• Vibration cartographies are not computed for excitation higher than H3 pump (value
not provided by the Vendor) because at these high frequencies, only local modes

Vibration cartographies
Figure 187 to Figure 190 present vibration cartographies along each axis.
Taking account of all dynamic forces of LP and Export compressor components, the
computed velocity levels along all axis are below the acceptable velocity levels.
Table 47 and Table 48 compare highest computed vibration levels to the acceptance
criteria.
Remark : the computed velocity levels at the technical rooms connecting points on the
supporting floor are below limit L4 (operators working continually in this area). The
criterion is fulfilled at the technical rooms connecting point on the supporting floor; it is
up to HHI to check the design inside the technical room in order to avoid vibration
it can be noticed that some local beams are slightly over than limit L3, on the
general work areas. Mode shapes at the origin of these high levels are principally local
modes of the secondary frame. These mode shapes are not relevant because of the mass
hypothesis (uncertainty regarding contingency factors, …) : associated computed velocity
levels are not relevant, so no structural modification is recommended to reduce these
levels.
* since limit L3 is respected all over S7 upper deck, limit L2 is necessarily respected.

3.13.4. Conclusion
The dynamic stiffnesses were computed along all three directions, at some points
corresponding to the fixation points of machines.
o Main deck
The calculated dynamic stiffnesses of module P7 main deck at Subsea Methanol Injection
Pump connecting points are:
o Upper deck
The calculated dynamic stiffnesses of module P7 upper deck at LP and Export compressors
connecting points are:
o Main deck
Despite deck modifications , bending modes of module S7 main deck under the SMI pumps
are still computed in the frequency range of interest [0, 26.3 Hz]. The implemented
structural modifications enable to shift these modes higher in frequency.
o Upper deck
No critical supporting floor modes are computed in the frequency range of interest
[20, 30 Hz].

o Main deck
Taking into account of the vibration levels induced by Subsea Methanol Injection pumps,
limit L3 is respected all over the main deck : there is no time restriction for human
exposure.
o Upper deck
At H1 = 25 Hz, taking into account of the vibration levels induced by LP and Export
Compressors, vibration acceptance criteria is respected all over the upper deck : there is
no time restriction for human exposure.
The dynamic behaviour of Module S7 upper deck is acceptable with regard to vibrations
limits allowable for human exposure.
Remark :
• The computed velocity levels at the technical rooms connecting points on the
supporting floor are below limit L4 (operators working continually in this area). The
criterion is fulfilled at the technical rooms connecting point on the supporting floor;
it is up to HHI to check the design inside the technical room in order to avoid

general work areas. Mode shapes at the origin of these high levels are principally
local modes of the secondary frame. These mode shapes are not relevant because
of the mass hypothesis (uncertainty regarding contingency factors, …) : associated
computed velocity levels are not relevant, so no structural modification is checked.

This paragraph presents the step 5 results of the vibration control philosophy : validation
by measurements of vibration levels and comparison to acceptance criteria that are
specified for the selected vibrating equipment.
Vibration measurements during Factory Acceptance Tests (F.A.T.) are performed on some
pieces of equipment, mainly on LLI.
