Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Explain the role and approaches of language assessment. (C4, P2, A4, PLO3, CTPS2)

2. Design various assessments and tests for specific language skills, sound system, grammar
and vocabulary in the primary ESL classroom. (C6, P7, PLO3, PLO6, PLO9, CTPS3, LL1,
LS2)

3. Explain the alternative forms of assessment, grading, feedback and reporting in the primary
ESL classroom. (C6, P2, A4, PLO3, PLO8, CTPS4, EM2)

4. Interpret the school-based assessment documents and procedures in the primary ESL
classroom. (C5, A5, PLO4, PLO5, PLO6, CS3, TS4, LL2)

5. Present issues and concerns in language assessment in Malaysian primary schools in


groups. (C6, P2, A2, PLO3, PLO4, PLO5, CTPS4, CS3, TS4)

This coursework assesses learning outcomes 1, 2 ,3 ,4 and 5 .


Continuous Assessment Objectives:

To enable students to:

1. develop the skills to design comprehensive assessments tailored to specific language


skills, and implement alternative forms of assessment, grading, feedback, and reporting
strategies to ensure a holistic understanding of students' language development.

2. interpret school-based assessment documents and procedures, fostering collaborative


group discussions to address pertinent issues and concerns, with a focus on the unique
context of Malaysian primary schools.

3. enhance proficiency in language assessment within the primary ESL classroom by


mastering diverse approaches to evaluate sound system, grammar, and vocabulary.

Students are required to complete the following tasks:

TASK 1: Design Test Items (Individual task) 30%

For this task, you are required to design test items to measure performance based assessment
and authentic assessment. The test items should contain the following aspects :
1.1) Language skills, sound system, grammar and vocabulary in the primary ESL
classroom.
1.2) Give your critical opinion on how to grade, give feedback and report for the
assessments your have designed .

Task guideline:
1. This task requires you to design test items and rubrics in 1000 words.
2. The test items should cater for Year 4 . Please refer to the learning standard and
Performance standard for Year 4.
3. Your writing should be transformed into e-portfolio by uploading it on the Padlet wall.
4. A hardcopy also must be submitted to your lecturer .
5. The URL link to the Padlet will be provided by your lecturer .
TASK 2: Oral Presentation (group) (10%)

In a group of three, you are required to conduct an oral presentation on the topic provided. The
length of the presentation is 30 minutes.

Reflect on and discuss specific aspects of interpreting assessment guidelines and addressing
concerns related to fairness and inclusivity in language assessments for diverse student
populations in Malaysian primary schools. The questions belojw are to guide you in the
discussion .

a) How do primary ESL teachers interpret and apply the guidelines outlined in school-
based assessment documents within the Malaysian context?

b) Are there specific concerns related to the fairness and inclusivity of language
assessments for diverse student populations within Malaysian primary schools?

Task guideline:

1. Presentation must include every member of the group.


2. Every group must come up with a consensus at the end of the discussion.
3. In the event where there are extra students in the class, pairs need to be formed.

TASK 3: Quiz (10%)

You are required to respond to 5 questions. You have a time limit of 30 minutes to complete the
tasks.

Additional guidelines for coursework:

i. This coursework requires you to work individually for Task 1 and 3 and in groups for
Task 2.
ii. Plagiarism and collusion are strongly prohibited. Cases of suspected plagiarism and/or
collusion will be seriously dealt with and may result in a penalty being taken against you
if found guilty. The declaration on the Assessment Report (AR) form serves as a
reminder of your responsibility in this important matter.
iii. Assignments must be submitted before the end of the submission date. Request for
extension will not be entertained unless the case presented is clearly genuine and
supported by valid evidence.
iv. The front page / cover of your assignment must consist of:
