BACKGROUND OF DISCUSSION:
Manual Handling & Lifting of an object is part or ergonomic hazards.
Ergonomics is the way you use your body to work and fitting the job or task to you to reduce your risk of
injury. These musculoskeletal injuries develop slowly over time and occur in the soft tissues of your body like
the nerves, tendons, muscles, ligaments and joints. Examples of these injuries are low back strain, carpal
tunnel syndrome, and tendonitis. These injuries are called musculoskeletal disorders or MSDs.
Repetition- involves doing the same task Spine and Back Injuries
repeatedly that uses the same muscles Slip discs
over and over. Muscle Injury
High Force- using high muscle power Nerve Injuries
during activities such as heavy lifting, Tendons Injury
pushing items or gripping tools. Joints and Cartilage
Awkward Postures- working with your
body held in a poor position for a long
time. MOST COMMON INJURY IN MANUAL LIFTING:
Contact Stress- when pressure from an
object is pushed on the soft body tissues SLIP DISCS
(i.e. tool handle). LUMBAR STRAIN AND SPINAL INJURY
Hand-Arm Vibration- vibration that enters HERNIA
the body from a power tools or equipment
In conclusion,
If you disregard the simple injuries that you are experiencing and still doing the wrong posture
and techniques in lifting. Mark it in your memory! You will suffer the extreme spine and back
injury that will last till your old age.
