SECTION 11 66 23 - GYMNASIUM EQUIPMENT

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

A. Section Includes:

1. Exercise equipment.
2. Safety pads.

B. Scope Includes:

1. Compliance with the General Conditions of Contract.


2. Compliance with all current and applicable statutory codes and requirements.
3. Completion of the design, fabrication, supply and installation of all items
specified herein, shown on the Contract Drawings, and as required to provide a
complete installation.
4. Completion of the design and coordination of all interfaces with adjoining
systems and trades prior to the commencement of fabrication.

C. The Owner requires the Contractor to implement practices and procedures to meet the
project's environmental performance goals, which include compliance with the
requirements determined by the Sustainability Consultant’s design documentation
(LEED & WELL), and applicable local authority Green Building Regulation. Specific
project goals that may impact this area of work include, but are not limited to: reduced
impact of construction activities, construction waste recycling, reduction of water and
energy usage, adequate protection for storing materials, use of recycled-content
materials, use of locally manufactured materials, use of low-emitting materials, use of
materials having EPD's, and avoid use of restricted materials. The Contractor shall
ensure that the requirements related to these goals, as defined in individual
specification sections are implemented to the fullest extent. Substitutions, or other
changes to the work proposed by the Contractor or their Subcontractors, shall not be
allowed if such changes compromise the aforementioned environmental goals and
Green Building Regulation compliance.

1. Contractor shall, at all times undertake to ensure that all targeted goals are
achieved. As and when any risks arise that could compromise the achievement of
one or more of the targeted goals, the Contractor shall bring these to the attention
of the Employer's Representative immediately.

D. Related Requirements:

1. Section 09 65 66 "Resilient Athletic Flooring" for game lines and markers.

1.2 PREINSTALLATION MEETINGS

A. Preinstallation Conference: Conduct conference at Project site.

1.3 ACTION SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: For each type of product.

1. Include assembly, disassembly, and storage instructions for removable


equipment.
2. Motors: Show nameplate data, ratings, characteristics, and mounting
arrangements.

B. Sustainable Design Submittals: Refer to Division 01 Section 01 81 13 "Sustainable


Design Requirements."

C. Shop Drawings: For gymnasium equipment.

1. Include plans, elevations, sections, and attachment details.


2. Include details of field assembly for removable equipment, connections,
installation, mountings, floor inserts, and operational clearances.
3. Include transport and storage accessories for removable equipment.
4. Include diagrams for power, signal, and control wiring.

D. Samples: For each exposed product and for each item and color specified.

E. Samples for Initial Selection: For each type of gymnasium equipment.

F. Samples for Verification: For the following products:

1. Pad Fabric: Wall padding minimum 76 mm square, and corner and column
Samples minimum 76 mm long, with specified treatments applied. Mark face of
material.

1.4 INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS

A. Coordination Drawings: Court layout plans, reflected ceiling plans, and other details,
drawn to scale, and coordinated with ceiling-suspended gymnasium equipment, floor
inserts, game lines, and markers applied to finished flooring, and coordinated with each
other, using input from installers of the items involved:

1. Structural members to which overhead-supported gymnasium equipment will be


attached.
2. Suspended ceiling components, if any.
3. Items supported from building structure above the courts, including the
following:

C. Qualification Data: For Installer.

D. Product Certificates: For each type of gymnasium equipment.

E. Field quality-control reports.

F. Sample Warranty: For special warranty.

1.5 CLOSEOUT SUBMITTALS

A. Operation and Maintenance Data: For gymnasium equipment to include in operation


and maintenance manuals.

1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Installer Qualifications: An entity that employs installers and supervisors who are
trained and approved by manufacturer.

1.7 FIELD CONDITIONS

A. Field Measurements: Verify position and elevation of floor inserts and layout for
gymnasium equipment.

1.8 WARRANTY

A. Special Warranty: Manufacturer agrees to repair or replace components of gymnasium


equipment that fail in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period.

1. Warranty Period: Five years from date of Substantial Completion.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 EXERCISE EQUIPMENT

A. Products & Manufacturers: As indicated in Gym Equipment Schedule and Drawings.

B. Source Limitations: Obtain from single source from single manufacturer.

C. Metal Finish: Manufacturer's standard factory-applied, polyester powder-coat finish.

D. Wood Finish: Manufacturer's standard transparent or opaque-painted finish.

2.2 SAFETY PADS

A. Source Limitations: Obtain from single source from single manufacturer.

B. Surface-Burning Characteristics: Comply with ASTM E84; testing by a qualified


testing agency. Identify products with appropriate markings of applicable testing
agency.

1. Flame-Spread Index: 25 or less.


2. Smoke-Developed Index: 450 or less.

C. Pad Coverings: Provide safety pad fabric covering that is fabricated from puncture- and
tear-resistant, PVC-coated polyester or nylon-reinforced PVC fabric, minimum
475-g/sq. m and treated with fungicide for mildew resistance; with surface-burning
characteristics indicated, and lined with fire-retardant liner.

D. Wall Safety Pads: Padded wall wainscot panels designed to be attached in a continuous
row; each panel section consisting of fill laminated to backer board, with visible
surfaces fully covered by seamless fabric covering, free of sag and wrinkles and firmly
attached to back of backer board.

1. Backer Board: Minimum 9.5-mm- thick plywood, mat formed, or composite


panel.
2. Fire-Resistive Fill: Multiple-impact-resistant foam minimum 38-mm- thick,
fire-resistive neoprene, 96-kg/cu. m density.
3. Size: Each panel section 610 mm wide by minimum 1520 mm long.
4. Installation Method: Concealed mounting Z-clips.
5. Fabric Covering Color(s): As selected by Architect from manufacturer's full
range for [one] [two] <Insert number> color(s).

E. Corner Wall Safety Pads: Wall corner pad consisting of minimum 32-mm- thick,
multiple-impact-resistant, closed-cell, polyethylene-foam filler, covered on both sides
and all edges by fabric covering with self-adhesive, hook-and-loop attachment to
exposed face of wall.

2. Fabric Covering Color(s): As selected by Architect from manufacturer's full
range for two color(s).

F. Column Safety Pads: Pads covering exposed flange of columns to height indicated,
consisting of minimum 32-mm- thick, multiple-impact-resistant, closed-cell,
polyethylene-foam filler, covered on both sides and all edges by fabric covering with
[backer board and manufacturer's standard anchorage to column] [self-adhesive,
hook-and-loop attachment to exposed face of column].

1. Length: Each pad in manufacturer's standard length.


2. Fabric Covering Color(s): As selected by Architect from manufacturer's full
range for two color(s).

G. Round Column Safety Pads: Wraparound pads fully covering exposed round column to
height indicated, consisting of minimum 50-mm- thick, multiple-impact-resistant,
bonded polyurethane-foam filler, 96-kg/cu. m density, covered on both sides and all
edges by fabric covering with hook-and-loop attachment to column.

1. Length: Each pad in manufacturer's standard length.


2. Fabric Covering Color(s): As selected by Architect from manufacturer's full
range for two color(s).

H. Cutout Trim: Manufacturer's standard flanged cutout trim kits for fitting pads around
switches, receptacles, and other obstructions.

1. Color: Gray.

2.3 MATERIALS

A. Support Cable: Manufacturer's standard galvanized-stranded-steel wire rope with a


breaking strength of 3175 kg. Provide fittings according to the wire rope manufacturer's
written instructions for size, number, and installation method.

B. Support Chain and Fittings: For chains used for overhead lifting, provide Grade 80
heat-treated alloy-steel chains, according to ASTM A391/A391M, with
commercial-quality, zinc-plated steel connectors and hangars.

C. General-Purpose Chain: For chains not used for overhead lifting, provide carbon steel
chain, according to ASTM A413/A413M (Grade 30 proof coil chain or higher grade
recommended by gymnasium equipment manufacturer). Provide coating type, chain
size, number, and installation method according to manufacturer's written instructions.

D. Castings and Hangers: Malleable iron, according to ASTM A47/A47M; grade as


required for structural loading.

E. Softwood Plywood: DOC PS 1, exterior.

F. Particleboard: ANSI A208.1.

G. Equipment-Mounting Board: Wood, neutral-color-painted finish; size and quantity as


required to mount gymnasium equipment according to manufacturer's written
instructions.

H. Anchors, Fasteners, Fittings, and Hardware: Gymnasium equipment manufacturer's


standard corrosion-resistant or noncorrodible units; concealed; tamperproof, vandal-
and theft-resistant design.

I. Grout: Nonshrink, nonmetallic, premixed, factory-packaged, nonstaining, noncorrosive,


nongaseous grout, according to ASTM C1107/C1107M, with minimum strength
recommended in writing by gymnasium-equipment manufacturer.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Examine substrates, areas, and conditions, with Installer present, for compliance with
requirements for court layout, alignment of mounting substrates, installation tolerances,
operational clearances,[ accurate locations of connections to building electrical
system,] and other conditions affecting performance of the Work.

1. Verify critical dimensions.


2. Examine supporting structure, [subgrades, ]subfloors, and footings below
finished floor.
3. Examine wall assemblies, where reinforced to receive anchors and fasteners, to
verify that locations of concealed reinforcements are clearly marked. Locate
reinforcements and mark locations.

B. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

3.2 INSTALLATION, GENERAL

A. Comply with manufacturer's written installation instructions[ and competition rules for
each type of gymnasium equipment].

B. Install gymnasium equipment after other finishing operations, including painting, have
been completed unless otherwise indicated.

C. Permanently Placed Gymnasium Equipment and Components: Install rigid, level,


plumb, square, and true; anchored securely to supporting structure; positioned at
locations and elevations indicated; in proper relationship to adjacent construction; and
aligned with court layout.

1. Operating Gymnasium Equipment: Verify clearances for movable components of


gymnasium equipment throughout entire range of operation and for access to
operating components.

D. Connections: Connect electric operators to building electrical system.

E. Removable Gymnasium-Equipment Components: Assemble in place to verify that


equipment and components are complete and in proper working order. Disassemble
removable gymnasium equipment after assembled configuration is approved by Owner,
and store units in location indicated on Drawings.

3.3 INSTALLATION OF SAFETY PADS

A. Mount with bottom edge at 102 mm above finished floor.

B. Cutout Trim: Limit cuts in face of padding so that cuts are securely and fully concealed
behind trim-kit flange.

3.4 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Testing Agency: Engage a qualified testing agency to perform tests and inspections.

B. Perform the following tests and inspections with the assistance of a factory-authorized
service representative:

1. Perform visual inspections and operational tests as recommended by the


equipment manufacturer.

C. Gymnasium equipment will be considered defective if it does not pass tests and
inspections.

D. Prepare test and inspection reports.

3.5 ADJUSTING

A. Adjust movable components of gymnasium equipment to operate safely, smoothly,


easily, and quietly; free from binding, warp, distortion, nonalignment, misplacement,
disruption, or malfunction, throughout entire operational range; and lubricate as
recommended in writing by manufacturer.

3.6 DEMONSTRATION

A. Engage a factory-authorized service representative to train Owner's maintenance


personnel to adjust, operate, and maintain gymnasium equipment.
