Choosing balanced teams is very important. Since children vary so much in strength and size, it
is good to split older children evenly between teams. Older children may also have more
understanding about the abilities of their fellow players, whereas younger children maybe
tempted simply to pick their friends. Therefore before the play begins, explain the rules of the
game to the players in simple terms. Tell them about the importance of the line marked on the
ground. Tell each team to pick an anchor player. This usually is the strongest and largest member
of the team. This player will hold the end of the rope and provide support for his/her teammates.
Tell the player that pulling in a united manner is the key to success.
Safety is very important in tug of war. Make sure that the playing area is free of anything that
might trip players, or harm them if they fall on it. Additionally, make sure that nobody ever
wraps the rope or cloth around their arms. While this might seem like a good way of securing it,
it can cause nasty burns or even extremely serious injuries if the rope breaks or fingers become
caught in it.
