Compassionate, selfless, dedicated, caring and professional are only a few words commonly used

to describe nurses. The nursing profession requires so much more than traditional training. It
entails life experiences, values, and empathy. Patients rely on nurses to provide them with the
best care possible and entrust them with their most prized possession: the future of their lives. I
believe that the only way to be the greatest nurse possible is to conduct one’s self professionally,
convey compassion to each patient, exhibit empathy and treat others the way that you would
want to be treated.

I believe that nurses should be held to a higher professional standard than most other professions.
Although careers that are conducted behind desks are imperative for the continuation of our
society, a career in nursing is imperative for the continuation of human life. Because such a large
responsibility is put into the hands of medical professionals, it is crucial that they are properly
trained and perform these skills exceptionally.

Usually, people go to the doctor to seek help because they suspect something is wrong with their
health. With this understanding, it is necessary to provide these patients with comfort and
assurance. I will always take initiative to understand the needs of a patient whether it is physical
or psychological. It is my job to be aware of changes in the patient’s status that may lead to the
realization of what is causing them pain or discomfort. In order to effectively do this, I will
remain focused and attentive and provide them with compassion when necessary.

An essential aspect of nursing to consider is respect. This means that I will keep my patient’s
information confidential, I will perform at the highest level I am capable of, and I will appreciate
everyone, no matter his or her background, diversity, or gender.

I will maintain an environment that people feel comfortable coming to for help. I will provide
them with a reassuring face and care for them the best that I can. I will come to work every day
with a passion to help others and a goal to heal as many people as possible. I consider nursing to
not only be a profession, but also a way of life.
