In recent years, there has been a significant surge in the popularity of electric
vehicles, leading to an increasing demand for smart and effective charging
infrastructure. The increasing number of EVs will significantly change the electric
load profiles of power systems by bringing unpredictable and dynamic electricity
needs. This presents new challenges and limitations for the grid. An optimal charging
strategy for EVs is crucial to overcome these challenges.
Maximum utilization of renewable energy in an EV charging station (EVCS)
is a perfect solution for alleviating the scarcity of electricity from the main grid. The
design of an energy management system (EMS) is challenging due to the uncertainties
in renewable energy generation and EV charging demand. Data-driven methods for
modeling and controlling EVCS infrastructure have drawn more attention in recent
times. These data driven control approaches are less computationally heavy than using
optimization and centralized control of distributed energy systems. They can converge
faster to an acceptable sub-optimal solution. This research work aims to develop an
EMS and charging scheduling system for an EVCS. Coordinated charging of EVs can
decrease the passive influence of the charging load and maximize the benefit of
charging station operators.
A robust charging scheduling scheme for EVs in a solar power integrated
parking lot is considered. The EV charging scheduling problem developed that can
minimize the operating cost of the parking lot operator while ensuring connected
EV’s charging demands. In this, the uncertainties in EV charging management
problem are taken into account. Then to enhance transparency and interpretability in
decision making processes for the EMS of an EVCS, Reinforcement Learning (RL)
based EMS is proposed. The charging management problem is framed as markov
decision process from the perspective of the EVCS operator which identify optimal
schedules of connected EVs. Simultaneously, it aims to alleviate stress on the main
grid by enhancing PV self-consumption. The real-world scenarios are formulated by
considering the stochastic nature of renewable energy and the commuting behavior of
EVs.
In this research work, machine learning methods with the conventional model
predictive control (MPC) is combined to build a Data-Driven MPC (DMPC) which
can adapt to the changes in the system’s behaviour over time. This DMPC framework
integrating Adaptive Random forest offers a more transparent and user-friendly EMS
solution for the EVCS.
