Unit casualties are kept track of by using Perry

Miniature’s dead and wounded figures rather than
simple tokens. This gives a much better and pleasing
visual display – which is what figure wargaming is all
about?
I don’t have all that many casualty figures and
therefore swap them between units as needed. I
have often thought about buying and painting up
many more – these could then be left in place where
the casualties occurred as the units move on. These
casualty figures would then show the ebb and flow of
battle, as well as at the end of the game, with the table
littered with these figures, giving a grim reminder of
the true cost of war.

THE BATTLE
The idea for this particular battle began, as it probably
does for most wargamers, whilst browsing some
history or other and coming across a passage which
makes you think: wow! That would be great to see on
the wargame table. Whilst reading about the British
assault from the sea onto the Aboukir Peninsular,
Egypt in 1801, I came across this description:

Next to arrive were the 1st and second guards – both
battalions drawn one after the other. They landed on
the far-left beach from the British perspective, and
then two columns of French Infantry also arrived, and
appeared opposite the Guards.

THE FIGHT CONTINUES

So, the battle developed: more and more French
units, all of them infantry, together with a ‘cloud’
of skirmishers, kept coming and all arrived on the
far right of the French line. This added up to a very
crowded sector with little space for any manoeuvring.
The Lancers were driven off by the accurate fire from
the 95th and the 45th made it assure although having
taken heavy casualties and being ‘in shock’, would take
no further part in the battle.

this can also be applied to built-up areas if the force is

MAP TO TABLE
The purpose of map movement is to manoeuvre
elements of your command into position to launch
attacks on the enemy. Ideally, the positions should be
advantageous to you in terms of the terrain (better
suiting your troops) or to threaten and capture key
enemy positions such as supply dumps, river crossings
and centres of population. It is also the purpose of the
map movement to work around the enemy and hit his

CAMPAIGN MOVEMENT
Troops would normally undertake one or two marches
per day. The first march would begin just after dawn
and end for a rest and food at around noon. After two

undertake their second march of the day. The following
table shows the map distances in miles that can be

In terms of the tactical game, the Japanese were
usually on the attack as they were under pressure to
finish the war before the Russian reinforcements and
supplies arrived in the war zone. They had also studied
the best European practices and adopted many of the
German General staff methods. Unless the Russians
are attacking in a specific scenario, the Japanese always
have the initiative.

TURNS
A side has two actions per unit per turn, and the
Japanese player can carry out both, either first or
second, or can carry out one, and then force the
Russian player to react with both of their actions, and
then carry out its own final action. The choice made
must be communicated at the start of the turn and can
change from one turn to another.
It is therefore possible for the Japanese player to
allow the Russian to do both actions on turn one, then
carry out two actions of its own. In the following turn
the Japanese can go first allowing for four consecutive
Japanese actions. The only proviso being, that if this
option is chosen, the Russian player is allowed to fire
out of sequence, at any time in the second move phase.
Without this rule, Japanese cavalry would be able to
move 48”, before they receive any enemy fire. This
system gives some interesting tactical decisions and
reflects the far greater acumen of the Japanese staff and
forces on the battlefield.
The actions which are available are:

◗ Move
