COMMAND DECISION

BATTLE OF MAHARAJPORE:
16 JULY 1857
Not content with two battles on the 15th,
Havelock marched his men 16 miles to close
with a force under Nana Sahib blocking
the Grand Trunk Road near the village of
Ahirwa. The Rebels made good use of the
terrain, walled gardens and the village
houses. Havelock left the Volunteer Cavalry
on the Grand Trunk Road and manoeuvred
the rest of his force around to turn the Rebel
left. It was a tough fight as Havelock was
outnumbered about five to one.

PROTAGONISTS
We now follow each of the forces in turn, firstly with
the Mixed Brigade who set off after their victory at
Songhwan.
They first dispatched a small party of Japanese
scouts led by Lt Machida who headed north and spent
9 days observing the Chinese forces at Pyongyang but
were discovered and in a skirmish with 200 Chinese
cavalry all but 2 were killed. The vanguard of the force
under Major Ichinobe set off from Seoul on the 8th
August and advanced to Kaisong where they met up
with the survivors of the scouting party.
The subsequent advance was cautious knowing
Chinese were in the vicinity. The Chinese were equally
cautious; and feeling exposed fell back on Pyongyang.
Meanwhile the Japanese due to logistical problems had

The Chinese under the command of General Yeh,

Chinese forces along the way.
Another Japanese force under Lt General Nodzu
had landed at the southern port of Fusan (present day

24th August they linked up with Major Ichinobe’s approach. His plan was to employ a favoured Japanese

a further Mixed Brigade from the Third (Nagoya) This tactic was also employed at the WWII Battle of
Division and made available for the Pyongyang Midway but its weakness as a concept was exposed;
if the enemy has prior intelligence as to the plan and
whereabouts of the forces they can be defeated in detail.
The other possible weakness is if the forces lack
coordination as they advance in secret then the attack
may be delivered and defeated piecemeal. To avoid
this Yamagata set the date for the attack on Pyongyang
as the 15th September which allowed time to recover
any consequential delays.

CHINESE
The Chinese for their part had been kept informed
by their network of informants and spies throughout
Korea of the advance of the Japanese forces, excepting
the Gensan detachment whose landing had blindsided
them. Their forces remained on edge anticipating the
arrival of the Japanese enemy. Outside of Chung-hwa
3,000 Chinese had been encamped and during the
night had been startled by a party of Koreans who
were taken for Japanese raiders. This had set off a
general bout of wild, uncontrolled firing for 3 hours
leading to heavy casualties among the Chinese forces.

THE ADVANCE
The Japanese final advance to Pyongyang was not

On a recent visit to Poundland (a UK retail store) I came across these
items, called Final Faction KHARN weapons packs, or shock arms.

They were on clearance and I bought all three available packs for
just 25p each.

It set me thinking that they would be great as standing in for

Genestealer space craft.

2.
The larger ‘Burrower’ needed very little work to convert it into a
great representation of a living spaceship.

I removed the pistol grip and trimmed any mould lines with a
scalpel before drilling a 3mm hole into the bottom so I could insert
a wooden cocktail stick, ready for paint and ultimately mounting
onto a GW flying base.

3.
Painting was simple enough; in fact I copied the basic purple colour
scheme with added yellow highlights and dark red mouth areas.

I then began giving the models a wash of purple and dark blue inks.

I ended up with some gloss varnishing.

4.
The three craft were then superglued on to the flying bases and
were quickly ready for any game of space combat. The finished
spacecraft are 87mm long and mounted on to 32mm round flying
bases.

I still have the remaining craft to model and paint but wanted
to test the theory of using such simple toys as spacecraft for
wargaming.

Next month: a Greek Mythology piece. It’s all bull!
