SECTION – I
(INTEGER ANSWER TYPE )
This section contains 8 questions. The answer is a single digit integer ranging from 0 to 9 (both inclusive).
Marking scheme +4 for correct answer , 0 if not attempted and 0 in all other cases.

1. A cylinder contains 0.15 kg of hydrogen. The cylinder is closed by a piston supporting a

weight of 74 kg (see fig.), n × 103 J amount of heat is given to lift the weight by 1.2 m ?
The process should be assumed isobaric, the heat capacity of the vessel and the
atmospheric pressure should be neglected. Find n (n is single digit.)

2. The emissivity of tungsten is approximately 0.35. A tungsten sphere 1 cm in radius is

suspended within a large evacuated enclosure whose walls are at 300 K. What power
input is required to maintain the sphere at a temperature of 3000 K if heat conduction
along the supports is neglected ? Express your answer in kW after rounding off to the
nearest integer. Take  = 17 × 10–8 S.I. units and  = 213 .

3. A bar measured with a Vernier Caliper is found to be 1800 mm long. The temperature
during the measurement is 10ºC.
The measurement error if the scale of the Vernier Caliper has been graduated at a
temperature of 20ºC is found to x × 10–2 mm. Find x. (   1.1106 / k )
4. An insulated container is filled with mixture of water & ice at 0°C. Another container is
filled with water that is continuous boiling at 100°C. In a series of experiments, the
containers are connected by various thick rods that pass through the walls of the
containers. The rod is insulated in such a way that there is no heat loss to surroundings. In
experiment 1, a copper rod is used and the ice melts in 20 min. In experiment 2, a steel
rod is used and ice melts in 60 min. How long would it take to melt the ice if the two rods
are used in series is 10x minutes find x.

surface charge density  = + 10–12 C/m2. The cylinder serves as a source of electrons, with
the velocity of the emitted electrons perpendicular to its surface. Minimum electron
velocity must be … × 105 m/s to ensure that electrons can move away, from the axis of the
cylinder to a distance greater than r = 103 m.

6. Two identical capacitors are connected as shown and having initial charge Q0. Separation
between plates of each capacitor is d0. Suddenly the left plate of upper capacitor and right
plate of lower capacitor start moving with speed v towards left while other plate of each
capacitor remains fixed.
