Leading Steel
Manufacturer Optimizes
Cloud Economics by
Building a Future-Ready
IT Infrastructure on
Microsoft Azure
Introduction The customer has been a manufacturer of high manganese steel for over 2
decades. Its products are used in crushing and mining industries. Summarising its
capabilities as ‘Consistent with Precision’ and ‘Committed to Delivery’, the
company offers a huge range of manganese spare parts that are compatible with
all major crush makes.
Having started its operations from Haryana, the company had been extending its
reach to other parts of the country and had an aim to globalize its business. To
fuel this growth, it needed a cloud-based enterprise resource planning system
(ERP) that could combine business intelligence, infrastructure, computing and
database solutions.
Business Challenge To set up an ERP infrastructure that could keep pace with its business growth, the
customer needed application servers, database servers, and disaster recovery
systems. It had purchased some of them as on-premise solutions from another
Mumbai based service provider.
The customer then pondered upon the idea of using a better alternative for its ERP
system due to practical problems of using physical servers:
• The extended business operations had to go live within a month and the setup
was not ready to underpin all the apps and software used to manage
workloads.
• The capital expenditure (CapEx) was enormous and there were additional costs
of utilities, security, and backup power.
• It was not easy to scale the infrastructure, and efficient performance of
different apps - web or mobile based – was not always guaranteed due to the
complexity of its components.
CASE STUDY
As global enterprises are increasingly realizing the benefits of moving to the cloud
technology, they are opting for Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) or hybrid
infrastructure. The customer also delved into the advantages of such setups for its
digital processes and finding a good solution in Microsoft Azure, it contacted TTBS
for systematic implementation of the cloud service.
TTBS Solution Having analysed the company’s technology requirements, our solution architects
knew that Microsoft Azure would be the right solution. We configured the same,
starting with the deployment and development of a test server so that the in-
house IT and business teams could design and successfully test the ERP
modules.
After finalising the correct size of the infrastructure for the go-live stage, we
deployed the production server along with the database server. The company
could now run its applications, store data and enable seamless collaboration on
a cloud platform.
The new ERP system met the company’s requirements and helped it to overcome
the problems faced with on-premise setup:
• As it was a cloud-based infrastructure, the configuration did not take long and
became ready to fuel enterprise applications in less than a week.
• Microsoft Azure gave the company pay-as-you-go cloud services, enabling it to
avoid the CapEx and heavy maintenance expenses associated with legacy IT
infrastructure.
• All the applications and software migrated to Azure performed seamlessly
and could be used from anywhere.
• It was easy to increase the application load and number of users, in line with
changing business requirements.
The shift to IaaS model also helped the organisation to free up its IT team for
more value-added activities that required human intervention. It brought
measurable returns on investment and made the infrastructure easier to
maintain.
