States to follow the paths of Nordic countries, Ireland, Spain, the United
Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Mexico, Japan, and developing countries,
which have implemented ILO and ISO guidelines. The most innovative
advances are attention to loneliness (United Kingdom), making return
to work safer (South Australia), death from overwork (Japan), and a
requisite disconnection from work outside work hours as enforced by
several nations. Solutions do exist to take on the scourge of psychosocial
hazards that are ignored in the United States. Will employers here volun-
tarily redesign work in response to the pandemic to align themselves with
their international counterparts? This book refutes the proffered excuse
that they could not know what to do.’

Finally, while it is far from simple to address the wide scope of PSHs
that can lead to physical or psychological injuries in the modern world
of work –indeed, it is both complex and multidimensional—that is
exactly where we need to get to in the United States, now more than ever.
My hope for this book is that it will contribute to moving us forward
in meeting this challenge. The U.S. workplace has much to gain from
doing so.

Terminology
An increasing recognition of the importance of employees’ psycho-
logical health and the necessity of organizations managing psychosocial
hazards and work-related stress has brought numerous terms into the
vocabulary.
The U.K. Health and Safety Executive states that psychosocial risk
factors are things that may affect workers’ psychological response to
their work and workplace conditions (including working relationships
with supervisors and colleagues). Psychosocial risk management is thus
the management of risks associated with the work organization and the
social context of work, which have the potential to cause psychological
and physical ill-health.
Fluid Terminology
The definition of stress and the terminology used to refer to psycho-
social hazards and risks has changed over the years, from stressors or
stress factors to psychosocial factors, psychosocial hazards, or psycho-
social risks.
The terms “psychosocial hazards” and “psychosocial risks” are some-
times used interchangeably in the literature. Although there is a rea-
sonable consensus in the scientific community regarding the nature of
psychosocial hazards, “it should be noted that new forms of work and the
changing working environment give rise to new hazards; and therefore
the definition of psychosocial hazards can still evolve.” (International
Labour Organization, 2016, pp. 2– 4). Psychological health means
mental health, and a range of terms are used in relation as to the effect

The fact that some workers are more vulnerable because of events
connected with their personal lives does not relieve the company of
its responsibility and its obligation to prevent occupational risks.
