1. ASSESSMENT OF RISKS

The instructions given in this Operating Manual shall be read carefully before switching the system
on. The Operating Manual shall never be parted from AURA cabinets.

This manual covers an open fronted, vertical laminar flow safety cabinet designed to protect the
worker and the environment against the risks that might occur during handling biological agents.

Packing, handling and installation of the cabinet are dealt with in detail in the relevant chapter (3.).

The cabinet is fitted with a safety glass front screen with counterbalanced opening through pre-
compressed gas springs. Smooth lifting and closing of the screen are ensured.

Should the system come with a UV germicidal lamp, special attention shall be focused on the
relevant paragraph (3.5.3) to prevent personnel from being exposed to UV rays.

For fuel gas service connected to the Bunsen burner, the relevant chapter (4. UTILITIES) shall be
carefully referred to in order to avoid fuel gas leaks and fire and/or explosion risks connected
therewith.

The chapter on Decontamination provides instructions as to how the personnel can be protected
against the exposure to formaldehyde vapours.

WARNING
Biologically safe conditions are NO longer ensured when audible and visible alarm devices
turn on. In such a case, close the front access and contact the servicing organization.

THE MANUFACTURER SHALL BE SAVED HARMLESS FROM ANY CIVIL AND


PENAL LIABILITY FOR MISUSE, FAULTY OPERATION, TAMPERING, AND IN
GENERAL FOR ANY USE NOT ALLOWED BY AND NOT CONFORMING TO THE
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN IN THIS MANUAL.

2. RULING STANDARDS AND DEFINITION

AURA 2000 MAC cabinets comply with machine directives EN 392, which include the
electromagnetic compatibility “EMC” according to CE 89/336.

The cabinets also comply with safety requirements for electrical equipment for laboratory use as per
EN 61010- 1: 2001-03.

AURA 2000 is a Class II, Type A safety cabinet designed for handling biological agents according
to regulations applied in the users’ Countries.

Reference to the listed classes of microbic species is consequently IMPERATIVE in order to


assess which ones can be handled in a class II safety cabinet.

Categories of etiological agents are defined by the official lists released by local authorities.

CLASS II SAFETY (BIOHAZARD) CABINET.


Class II safety cabinets are classified by international standards.

– EN 12469: 2000 Biotechnology – Performance criteria for microbiological


safety cabinets;
– NSF 49 (National Sanitation Foundation – USA):

AURA 2000 is a Class II safety cabinet designed to recycle the exhaust air into the laboratory.

Should the exhaust air be ducted outside the laboratory, an exhaust kit including the draft breaker
hood (thimble) and the remote extract fan would be added. Contact EUROCLONE dealers for
detailed instruction.

3. HANDLING, INSTALLATION, CONNECTION

WARNING

Unpacking, positioning and electrical connection shall be carried out solely by specialized
staff, following the instructions listed in this chapter.
The safety regulations at work, as prescribed in the ruling standards, shall be observed
during handling and installation.
EUROCLONE S.p.A. declines all responsibility for damages deriving from installation or
alterations by non authorized staff.

3.1 HANDLING
A lift truck or hand-operated lift truck shall be used for transporting or lifting the cabinet.
Length of the truck forks shall be adequate to the dimensions of the cabinet in order to support the
front and rear edges equally.

3.2 UNPACKING
Remove the wrapping film, unload the cabinet from the pallet and put it on the floor carefully.

Warning: most breakages occur while unpacking.

3.3 POSITIONING

Cabinet performance depends on installation site.

The cabinet shall be installed in an air-draft-free room to avoid prejudice to the air intake and
exhaust flowrate. Minimum space required between the ceiling and the exhaust outlet shall be 300
mm.
The cabinet shall be positioned far from air conditioning louvers and aisles affected by foot traffic.
If required, assemble the floor stand (optional) according to instructions at 3.5.1.
If the cabinet is to be placed on a bench or a table, check that they can support its weight.
The cabinet shall be levelled; the floor stand is equipped with levelling feet.

3.4 ELECTRICAL CONNECTION


It is recommended to connect the cabinet to either a preferential power system or a system with
continuity group.
Electrical classification of the cabinet is Class 1 fixed installation.
The cabinet is fitted with a power cord to be connected to the mains through a dedicated power
switch, to isolate the unit when servicing. The switch should be placed near the cabinet; if far from
it, it shall be of lockable type.

Make sure that the voltage indicated on the cabinet tag is consistent with the mains voltage.

Grounding must comply with local regulations.

The supply cord is a certified cable with three 1.5 mm2 cross-section wires. If the cord should be
changed, the length of the earth wire shall be such that it is the last to break in case of pulling or
failure of clamping points.

The identification colours of the supply cord wires are:


– brown = live
– blue = neutral
– yellow/green = grounding

3.5 INSTALLATION OF OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT

3.5.1 Floor Stand

On request a floor stand is supplied disassembled.


A complete floor stand assembling instructions are included within the packing.

3.5.2 Ducting for Exhaust Airflow

If ducting for air exhausting outside the room is required, please contact EUROCLONE for the
relating installation instructions (see par. 2.).

3.5.3 UV Lamp

On request, a UV lamp is supplied in a specific kit. The lamp, to be assembled on the front closing
panel (see assembling instructions below), assures disinfection of the cabinet working area. Its
efficacy depends on the exposure time to the lamp radiations of micro-organisms to be destroyed.
Specific tables give correct information on this subject. The wavelength of such radiations is 253.7
nm.

UV radiations may cause erythema and conjunctivitis. Exposure of skin and eyes to such
radiations is absolutely to be avoided. Before removing the front closing panel, it is
consequently necessary to switch the lamp off.

The UV lamp kit (1) shall be mounted on the front closing panel (2) by means of screws (3) to be fit
in brackets (4) after passing the cable (5) in the grommet on the panel (6). The lamp plug (7) shall
be inserted in the socket on the right side of the control panel. On the dash board there is a specific
push button for the lamp. Fluorescent lamps and UV lamp can’t work simultaneously since they are
electrically interlocked.

3.6 FINAL PROCEDURES

Once installation is over, carry out the final procedures before operating the cabinet:

– make sure that remote switch is turned off;


– remove the working surface;
– carefully clean the cabinet inside and outside following instructions reported at relevant
paragraph. Cleaning products and solvents aggressive to paint shall be avoided. Use specific
products for stainless steel surfaces;
– put the working surface in its position after checking that no foreign body has slipped under it
(use lint-free clothes);
– decontaminate the inner surfaces (see par. 8. MAINTENANCE);
– stick the BIOHAZARD symbol on the outside part of the door of the room where the cabinet
operates;
– carry out the test (see test report) prescribed to verify that no damage to the cabinet has occurred
during transport and that installation is correct. Should any problem arise, please contact
EUROCLONE Headquarters.

4. STANDARD UTILITIES

4.1 COMBUSTIBLE GAS LINE

Combustible gas inlet is controlled by a solenoid valve, connected to the cabinet according to local
regulations.

Gas supply is automatically cut off in case of sudden lack of the vertical airflow. This safety
measure prevents HEPA filter damage and possible risk of fire.

The gas tap shall be always closed when gas is not used.

EUROCLONE declines all responsibility for damages deriving from disregard of such safety
measures.

4.2 FLUIDS

Non combustible pressurized fluids are supplied through a ball valve. Fluids must be non agressive
towards materials of which the valve is made (body in brass, ball in chromiumplated brass, gaskets
in PTFE).
Such utility can’t be used for combustible gases.

4.3 ELECTRICAL OUTLET

The service socket is installed inside the working space. Electric data of the utilities shall not exceed
the parametre indicated at par. 7. (Operating Instructions).

5.11 OPERATOR SAFETY WORKING AREA

Operate in the innermost part of the working area. Try to avoid that contaminated material passes
over the sterile one when shifting it; keep contaminated material separate from sterile one. Keep
sterile material far from the front edge of the working area and wastes in a back corner of the
working surface.

6. OPERATING PRINCIPLE

The working area is ventilated by unidirectional HEPA filtered air flow whose rate is approximately
70% of the total handled air volume, whereas 30% creates an inward air flow at the access opening.

The cabinet is equipped with a fan for handling 100% of the air volume to a plenum from which a
portion of the air is supplied to the work area and the reminder is exhausted from the cabinet
through an exhaust HEPA filter.

The exhausted air volume corresponds to that which creates the inward air flow for personnel
protection.

HEPA filtration of both ventilation circuits assures sterility of the work area for products and of the
exhaust air for ambient protection.

7.2 CONTROL PANEL

The control panel includes a three-step key switch (A) plus a series of soft-touch tapping keys and
pilot lights.

The keys are multifunction, which means that when two are pressed simultaneously, the operator is
enabled to enter the operative mode for programming and to have access to data through the
alphanumeric display.

The panel also includes two bargraphs for the immediate control of the ventilation rates.The
bargraph R shows the air exhaust rate, while the S one shows the air recirculating rate (LAF).

When the green zones of the bargraph are lighted up, the cabinet is operating in safe conditions;
when the red lighted zones are activated, the alarm devices turn on (see par. 7.3).

7.3 OPERATING PROCEDURES

The step switch A must be set at position 1 for the operative mode of the cabinet, or at position 2 for
programming and recording functions.

On position 2, the fan and the solenoid valve for combustible gas are automatically put out.

7.3.1
As soon as the switch A is turned to position 1, the red pilot light B flashes. The display shows
“SELF TESTING PLEASE WAIT”; all warning pilot lamps and the bargraph are lighted up, then the fan is
activated to set up the ventilation rate for safe operations. The set up time lasts 40 ÷ 50 seconds.

Then the red light B1 stops flashing and the green light turns on. During the set up time the display
shows “AURA MAC START UP” and “PRESS BOOST FOR BLACKOUT DETECTION”.

Press the key C to allow the detection of the future black out; if the display shows the data of
previous black out, press the key E repeatedly to cancel minutes, hours, day and duration and to
clear the display for the detection of the future blackout.

Now the cabinet is ready; the display shows “BARRIER OK” and the bargraphs are lighted up in the
green zones.

To get access to the actual figure of the ventilation parametre proceed as per follow:

– keep the key E pressed and press the key K to see the laminar flow velocity and the face velocity
(air barrier) in metres per second;
– a further press on keys E and K will show the same parametre in cubic metres per hour;
– parametres are displayed for two minutes;
– to clear the display within a shortest time, press the keys E and K. The visualization of these
parametres is not possible if the cabinet is in alarm status, therefore the key E is only enabled to
mute the sound of the alarm.

7.3.2
Position 2 of the Step switch gives access to the time/programming functions. As soon as the switch
is turned on position 2, the message on the display is “NO PROTECTION”, together with date and hour.

7.3.2.1
To set the actual time on the clock of the microprocessor, press the keys E and C; the day is
displayed, then sequential pressure of the key C enables the operator to set day-month-year-hour-
minutes.

On each step it is possible to store the actual data by pressing the key K, to decrease, and the key L,
to increase numbers.

When all keys are released, the display returns on the message “NO PROTECTION” within 30 seconds,
or more rapidly by pressing the key N.

7.3.2.2 UV Lamp Programming Function

Time switching and run time of the UV lamp can be set up by pressing first the key E and then the
key K; by further pressing on the key C, the display shows sequentially hours and minutes for both
switching and run time.
On each step it is possible to store the actual data by pressing again the key K, to decrease, and the
key L, to increase numbers.
At the end of this operation, after 30 seconds, the display is cleared and it returns to the message
“NO PROTECTION”. To clear more rapidly, press the key N.
If a power blackout occurs when the UV lamp is activated, the display will show the data of this
event and the red light B turns on. To clear the blackout detection on the display, press the key E
and the message returns to “NO PROTECTION”.
UV lamp programming function can not be eliminated. To avoid that the UV lamp is activated
round the clock, set the run time at “00”. On this situation, the UV lamp can be lighted manually by
pressing the key M and if power blackout occurs, the display will show the event as it is for the
programmed function.

7.3.3 Access to Memorized Data

7.3.3.1
For the access to the cabinet run hours (MASTER TIMER), press the key E and the key L. The data
displayed are automatically stored when the cabinet is switched on at first time. No zero setting is
possible.

For the access to other memorized data, press the key C once a time to see HEPA filters run hours
(HEPA TIMER). A further pressure on the key C, the UV lamp run hours (UV TIMER) will be
displayed. The data are automatically stored and accumulated.
The display is automatically cleared after 30 seconds from the releasing of the keys.

7.3.3.2
Both filters and UV run hours can be set to zero when filters and/or UV lamp are replaced.

Proceed for zero setting as per follow:

– check that the step switch is at 0 position;


– keep pressed the key C and turn the stop switch to position 2;
– the message on the display is “self testing please wait” and the buzzer turns on; release the key
C and the sound of the buzzer disappears;
– press the keys E and L for access to the run hours data;
– select by pressing the key C the data that have to be cancelled (see procedure at 7.3.3.1, second
paragraph);
– press the key M for more than 3 seconds; during this time the buzzer sounds; when the sound
stops, release the key M;
– turn the step switch on position 0.

Microprocessor memories are now ready to store new data.

7.4 GENERAL GUIDELINES

All people due to use AURA 2000 MAC cabinets shall be informed on relating operating
procedures and restrictions and shall be obliged to follow instructions carefully.

The cabinet can operate according to restrictions prescribed by their definition (see 2. RULING
STANDARDS AND DEFINITION).

The cabinet can’t be used when fan is off, when acoustic or visual alarms are activated, when
displays do not work, when the front window is open.

The cabinet protects neither the operator nor products from contamination deriving from massive
spilling of substances or use of inadequate techniques.

The cabinet efficiency test shall be carried out – and relevant certification issued – after installation,
filters replacement, any repositioning, and in any case every six months.

Any work shall be carried out according to a specific programme in which working steps, needed
materials and accessories (to be put in the cabinet) are listed.

Before turning the cabinet on, verify that there are no obstructions to air exhaust. The cabinet shall
be switched on at least ten minutes before starting work.

Operators’ hands and arms shall be always washed with a germicidal soap before and after work.
Operators should wear appropriate clothes, with long sleeves and elastic cuffs, and rubber gloves.

During work, only essential materials and equipment shall be put inside the working area, before
operating the cabinet, so that nothing would pass through the front air barrier until work is over.

Do not obstruct the slots of the front air intake grill: operators’ safety may be hampered.

Put objects at least 15 cm off from the front window and operate in the innermost part of the
working area. Try to avoid that contaminated material passes over the sterile one when shifting it;
keep contaminated material separate from sterile one. Keep sterile material far from the working
area and wastes in a back corner of the working surface.

Wait 2/3 minutes before starting work, to allow airborne contamination to be eliminated.

Activities inside the room should be limited because they could alter the laminar flow and air
barrier; in such case, the operator and product protection could be decreased. Each time doors are
open and closed, drafts are produced. It is consequently advisable to put an advice board such as:
“Safety cabinet on – no entrance”.

Filters progressive clogging can be controlled through the bargraphs and the digital display.

Once the work is over, keep the cabinet on for at least 10 minutes, so that any contaminating
substance can be removed from inside. Decontamination of inside surfaces shall be repeated once
all objects have been taken out of the cabinet. Special care should be taken when removing cultures
that have been accidentally poured inside the working area; they could actually favour the growth of
fungi and the spreading of their spores with consequent contamination of the cabinet.

Put the front closing panel on the cabinet front access and turn the UV lamp on, if installed.

Such guidelines should be followed at the end of each working day.

Do not use the cabinet for foreign objects storage.

For cleaning and decontamination, see par. 8.

8. CLEANSING AND DECONTAMINATION


BEFORE ANY CLEANSING OR MAINTENANCE WORK, THE SUPPLY POWER
SHALL BE DISCONNECTED.

Painted surfaces can be cleaned using common detergents. Solvents or other paint-aggressive
detergents shall be avoided. Specific products are recommended for stainless steel surfaces.

Decontamination of stainless steel interior surfaces should be carried out using specific disinfectants
and carefully following the relating instructions. Products containing chlorine must be avoided.

Decontamination of the cabinet is imperative before any maintenance work, filter replacement or
other operations requiring access to any contaminated – or potentially contaminated – section of the
cabinet. Cabinets shall be also decontaminated before dislocation or after any emergency. Cabinet
users shall follow the decontaminating method effective against the agent in question. In most cases,
decontamination through formaldehyde vapours is effective. Vapours are produced by the
evaporation of formaline or depolymerization of paraformaldehyde. In both cases, a vapour
concentration of at least 0.05 g of formaldehyde per cubic metre is required.

8.1 INFORMATION ON DECONTAMINATION WITH FORMALDEHYDE


CAUTION
Formaldehyde vapours are explosive at 75% concentration in dry air; its ignition point is at
430 °C. Autoignition temperature of paraformaldehyde is at 300 °C.

Calculate the volume of the overall dimensions of the cabinet.

Calculate the amount of paraformaldehyde required by multiplying the overall volume of the cabinet
by 10.6 g/m3 or the amount of formaline by multiplying the overall volume of the cabinet by 6
ml/m3.

If the cabinet has an exhaust duct, it shall be equipped with a damper, and both must be gas tight. If
the duct is more than 3 m long, additional formaldehyde may be needed to compensate for the
increased volume. If the cabinet exhaust flow is conveyed into a recirculating central system,
disconnect the duct from such system and seal it by means of plastic film and tape.
If the cabinet exhaust air is discharged into the room, seal the exhaust port by means of a suitable
cover, which shall be connected to a flexible hose in order to exhaust gas after decontamination.
During decontamination, the end of such hose shall be sealed. The hose shall be directed into a hood
exhaust system or placed out of a window to exhaust the gas outside. When formaldehyde gases
cannot be discharged, an appropriate neutralizing device shall be fitted on the exhaust port.

To make the liquid evaporate, use a thermostatically controlled plate placed on the working surface.
Depolymerization can also be done by using a hot air jet.

On the cabinet working surface, place a hot plate with a breaker of water and temperature and
humidity indicators.

Do not connect anything to the cabinet internal electric outlet (which must not be operational).

Close the front panel of the working area using plastic film and tape and seal electrical cord exit
carefully.

Set temperature and humidity inside the cabinet at 21 °C (or higher) and 60-85% respectively. Use
the hot plate to heat the breaker of water until the desired temperature and humidity are achieved.

During decontamination, turn on – at least 4 times – the cabinet blowers at regular intervals for 10-
15 seconds.

When the substance used for decontamination is over, disconnect the heating equipment from the
electrical outlet. Let the disinfectant act for at least 2 hours, better overnight.

Open the exhaust hose, turn on the cabinet blower and remove tape from the bottom of the plastic
film covering the front opening access.

It is advisable to ventilate the cabinet for at least one hour. To accelerate exhaust, the relating
pushbutton can be activated.

During decontamination, the use of respiratory protections for personnel is recommended.

WARNING

All the operations listed in the second part of this manual shall be carried out by authorized
and adequately trained staff.

Access to power system shall only be allowed to authorized staff, who are enabled to opening
the control panel.

All maintenance operations shall be carried out under power safe conditions.

The key selector switch in position “0” shall not act as a power isolating switch.

The total isolation of the cabinet shall be obtained by the remote power switch
(see 3.4 in Part I).

9. MAINTENANCE

9.1 ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS LOCATION

9.1.1 On the front control box (non contaminated area), the following components are located.

– Electronic power board and CPU board which includes dash board with soft touch keys and
warning lights.
– Fluorescent lamps with relevant ballasts and starters.
– Dedicated socket for UV kit.

To get access inside the control box, remove the screws on both top sides and gently leave the box
to rotate around the hinged edge till the horizontal position.

9.1.2 Fuses

Main fuses are located in the front control box.


Other fuses are mounted on the electronic boards.

9.1.3 Inside the cabinet (contaminated area) the motorblower is mounted onto the air plenum
together with the air flow sensor.

A second air flow sensor is located inside the flexible hose which connects the main filter plenum
with the exhaust filter plenum.

To have access to the motorblower and sensors, remove the large front panel.

9.1.4 When UV lamp is fitted, its relating ballast and starter are placed on the front closing panel.
To reach it, it is necessary to disassemble the protection metallic grid. The lamp shall be kept clean
and its bacterial effect frequently tested because the germicidal power can be lost even if the visible
rays remain unchanged.
WARNING: A microswitch makes impossible to turn the UV lamp on when the front closing panel
is not positioned.

CAUTION: Decontaminate the cabinet before opening the contaminated area.

9.2 FILTERS CHANGING

HEPA filters do not require maintenance. Average life is approx. 7000 hours. The main and the
exhaust filters are inside the cabinet in the contaminated area.

Decontaminate the cabinet by fumigation. Lower the control box as per 9.1.1 and remove the large
front panel as per 9.1.3.

9.2.1 Exhaust Filter

– Unscrew the four nuts fixing the exhaust filter plenum and lower it to clear the filter.
– Draw the filter out. CAUTION: personnel shall wear protection gloves and the filter shall be put
into a polyethylene bag to be hermetically sealed.
– Insert the new filter after checking integrity of gaskets and of their seats.
– Reassemble the plenum and the top panel.

9.2.2 Main Filter

– Unscrew the two clamps fixing the main filter (3): turn the two threaded bars (3) and lift the
plenum with the motorblower at least 5 cm (set free the main filter).
– Draw the filter out. CAUTION: personnel shall wear protection gloves and the filter shall be put
into a polyethylene bag to be hermetically sealed.
– Insert the new filter after checking integrity of gaskets and of their seats.
– Procede inversely to lower the plenum and to tight the filter gasket by the clamps.

Performance tests should be carried out after filters have been changed.

9.2.2.1 Main Filter for AURA 2000 BS

– Unscrew the two clamps fixing the main filter (3): turn the two threaded bars (3) and lift the
plenum with the motorblower at least 5 cm (set free the main filter).
– Draw out the Downward Airflow grid, pay attention of the correct assembling way: the
UPPER SIDE grid is without self-adhesive gasket while the LOWER SIDE takes the self-
adhesive gasket.
– Draw the filter out. CAUTION: personnel shall wear protection gloves and the filter shall be put
into a polyethylene bag to be hermetically sealed.
– Insert the new filter after checking integrity of gaskets and of their seats.
– Procede inversely to lower the plenum and to tight the filter gasket by the clamps.

Performance tests should be carried out after filters have been changed.

10. PERFORMANCE TESTS AND CALIBRATION

10.1 PERFORMANCE TESTS

10.1.1 Test to determine the integrity of the absolute filtration system (photometric method).

10.1.2 Test to determine the contamination level of the air inside the cabinet by airborne particle
count.

During working, air inside the cabinet should be in Class 100. According to Federal Standard 209,
air is in Class 100. The concentration of particles with a diameter less than or equal to 0.5 micron
shall not exceed 100 in a cubic foot and at the same time there are no particles with a diameter more
than or equal to 5 micron.

10.1.3 Test to determine laminar air flow and face velocities

The test shall be performed by means of a thermoanemometer to assess that laminar flow average
velocity and exhaust flow rate are included in the values established by the Quality Pass. Standard
air velocity shall be between 0.32 and 0.48 m/s for laminar flow, and more than 0.40 m/s for barrier
flow.

10.2 CALIBRATION

10.2.1 Foreword

Since any cabinet has its own characteristic, a procedure to personalize each unit is carried out at the
factory by connecting the CPU to a PC. The operative mode to personalize the cabinet is not
included in this manual. Please report to the Service Department of the manufacturer in case of
replacement of the CPU.

The air velocity indicator has been conceived to show LAF and exhaust flow values on two different
bargraphs. Air volumes both for laminar flow and exhaust flow are measured by means of air flow
sensors, whose operating principle is based on the optical detection of the idle impeller motion.

The output of the sensor Vt located close to the supply fan is compared with the output of the sensor
Ve located inside the flexible hose. Outputs Vt (LAF+exhaust) and Ve (exhaust) shall be calibrated
assuming that exhaust air flow is 1/3 of the total air flow. This calibration shall be made with the
unit in standard conditions.

Bargraphs are divided up in three sections: red-green-red, the central green area indicating good
operating conditions.

The digital display also shows the actual parameters of the LAF and exhaust air flows by following
the procedures described at par. 7. The displayed parameters are obtained through a calibration
procedure carried out at the factory during the primary test; such procedure can be repeated after the
replacement of the filters and possibly after the replacement of main components such as the flow
sensors, motorblower, etc.

10.2.2 Premises to Calibration

On a new machine, before calibration, the only absolute values that the microprocessor can measure
are rotation velocities of the two fans.
A linear (or quite linear) principle is established between the sensor impellers rpm and velocity (or
flow rate) of the same.
10.2.3 Operating Hypothesis

– The cabinet identifying code – which allows the system to choose mechanic parameters suitable
for such unit – is already set (see par. 10.2.1).
– The operator is equipped with a calibrated anemometer by which he can measure Vexh and Vlaf
(but not Vtot!). The value of the two velocities shall be equal to the mean value of velocites
measured on the whole exhaust and LAF cross sections.
– Exhaust flow calibration shall be carried out before LAF calibration, as the software steps
suggest. This because the correspondence between rpm and Vtot can be calculated only
indirectly on the basis of the correspondence between rpm and Vexh.

10.3 CALIBRATION PROCEDURE

Preliminary Instructions:
10.3.1 Disconnect cabinet from mains and open the box of the control panel.

10.3.2 Insert the jumper on the logic electronic board at X 9 points.

10.3.3 Close the control panel box, reconnect mains and switch on the cabinet. The fan voltage
supply is automatically set at 150 V and the display shows “SET BLOWER SPEED”.

10.3.4 REMARKS: Whenever the fan supply must be changed a pressure on the key L increase the
voltage, similarly the key K decrease the voltage. Every single pressure on the keys gives a step of 5
V.

10.3.5 The keys K and L may also change the numbers of the display showing set up condition and
calibration parameters.

10.3.6 Press the key K (gas symbol) to decrease the voltage to "A" value by cabinet size (see Tab.
1 page 35), to check parameters written on the test report. "A" value is the standard voltage for
standard Aura 2000 MAC with brand new filters.

10.3.7 If the calibration has to be performed on cabinets with a number of running hours that have
increased the filters pressure drop, the fan voltage must be set at the actual voltage that corresponds
to the air flows measurement.

10.3.8 Wait at least 3 minutes, then take the measurement both for recirculating and exhaustair
flows.
The found parameters shall correspond to those indicated on the test report (see para 10.4 – 10.5).
Should the parameters deviates from the reported value, change the fan voltage supply according to
the paragraph 10.3.4.

10.4 EXHAUST FLOW RATE CALIBRATION

10.4.1 Switch on the cabinet with the key switch on position 1 (Fan voltage is automatically set at
150 V - See para 10.3.3) then set the fan voltage as per para 10.3.4. Take the air velocity profile at
the exhaust outlet and calculate the mean.
Put the anemometer probe on the point that is significant with the mean.
Decrease by the key K the voltage till the anemometer shows a velocity corresponding to "B"
parameter (see Tab. 1 page 35) ± 0,01 m/s. Record velocity and voltage on the calibration sheet.
Wait at least 2 minutes then press the key E (mute); the display shows “SET EXH MIN” and the
corresponding default value.

10.4.2 By pressing the keys K and L decrease or increase the default value to get on the display the
actual air velocity read on the anemometer multiplied by the "C" coefficient (see Tab. 1 page 35)
(this coefficient is due to the different measurement of th exhaust rate carried out at the factory).
Store the date by pressing the key E (mute) and the display shows “SET EXH MIN
CALIBRATING”. Wait till the sound of the buzzer stops then the message on the display turns on
“SET BLOWER SPEED”.

10.4.3 Increase the fan voltage (key L) till the mean air velocity at the exhaust outlet reaches the
nominal value for the cabinet working in safe condition (see test report) record velocity and voltage
on the calibration sheet.
Wait at least 2 minutes then press the key E (mute); the display shows “SET EXH MAX” and the
corresponding default value.

10.4.4 By pressing the keys K and L decrease or increase the default value to get on the display the
actual air velocity read on the anemometer multiplied by the "C" coefficient (see Tab. 1 page 35)
(this coefficient is due to the different measurement of th exhaust rate carried out at the factory).
Store the date by pressing the key E (mute) and the display shows “SET EXH MAX
CALIBRATING”. Wait till the sound of the buzzer stops then the message on the display turns on
“SET BLOWER SPEED”.

10.4.5 Now the exhaust rate calibration is completed to proceed to the calibration of the
recirculating rate flow don’t switch off the cabinet; proceed to 10.5.1. paragraph.

10.4.6 If the cabinet is switched off a start up procedure must be followed:


– Switch on the cabinet with the key on position 1 and the display will show “SET
BLOWER SPEED”.
The fan voltage is automatically set at 150 V.
– Scroll by the key N the display messages. After “SET EXH MAX CALIBRATION” the display
turns on “SET BLOWER SPEED”.
– Press the key K to decrease the voltage to get nominal value (see recorded values at para. 10.4.2).
– Proceed to the next 10.5.1 paragraph.

10.5 RECIRCULATING FLOW RATE (LAF VELOCITY) CALIBRATION


10.5.1 Take the air velocity profile according to the grille depicted on the test report and calculate
the mean that should correspond to that recorded on the test report with tolerance of ± 5%. Put the
anemometer probe on the point that is significant with the air velocity mean.

10.5.2 Decrease the fan voltage by pressing the key K to get about 0,30 m/sec on the anemometer.
Record this velocity and the voltage on the calibration sheet.
Wait at least two minutes then press the key E (mute) and the display shows “SET LAF MIN”
together with the air velocity default value.

10.5.3 By pressing the keys K and L decrease or increase the default value to get on the display the
actual air velocity read on the anemometer. Press the key E to store the data and the display shows
“SET LAF MIN CALIBRATING”. Wait till the sound of the buzzer stops then the message turns on
“SET BLOWER SPEED”.

10.5.4 Increase the fan voltage (key L) to get on the anemometer the same air velocity recorded on
the test report (see para. 10.5.1). Wait at least 2 minutes then press the key E to store the data and
the display shows “SET LAF NOMINAL” and the default value of the air velocity.

10.5.5 By pressing the keys K and L decrease or increase the default value to get on the display the
actual air velocity read on the anemometer. Press the key E to store the date and the display shows
“SET LAF NOMINAL CALIBRATING”.
Wait till the sound of the buzzer stops then the message turns on “SET BLOWER SPEED”.

10.5.6 Increase the fan voltage to get 0,50 m/sec on the anemometer.
Wait 2 minutes then press the key E to store the data; record voltage and velocity on the calibration
sheet. The display shows “SET LAF MAX” and the air velocity default value.

10.5.7 By pressing the keys K and L decrease or increase the default value to get on the display the
actual air velocity read on the anemometer. Press the key E to store the data and the display shows
“SET LAF MAX CALIBRATING”.
Wait till the sound of the buzzer stops and when the message on the display turns on “SET
BLOWER SPEED”.

10.5.8 Decrease the fan voltage (key K) to return the anemometer reading to the same air velocity
recorded on the test report (see para 10.5.1).

10.6 RESTORING CABINET STANDARD FUNCTION

10.6.1 Disconnect cabinet from main and open the box of the control panel.

10.6.2 Remove the jumper X 9.

10.6.3 Close the control panel box and set the key switch on position 1.

10.6.4 The correct ventilation of the cabinet is controlled by the green zone of the bar graphs.

11. TROUBLE SHOOTING

ALWAYS REMEMBER TO ISOLATE THE CABINET BEFORE ANY OPERATION

12. CLEANSING AND DECONTAMINATION

BEFORE ANY CLEANSING OR MAINTENANCE WORK, THE SUPPLY POWER


SHALL BE DISCONNECTED.
Painted surfaces can be cleaned using common detergents. Solvents or other paint-aggressive
detergents shall be avoided. Specific products are recommended for stainless steel surfaces.
Decontamination of stainless steel interior surfaces should be carried out using specific disinfectants
and carefully following the relating instructions. Products containing chlorine must be avoided.
Decontamination of the cabinet is imperative before any maintenance work, filter replacement or
other operations requiring access to any contaminated – or potentially contaminated – section of the
cabinet. Cabinets shall be also decontaminated before dislocation or after any emergency. Cabinet
users shall follow the decontaminating method effective against the agent in question. In most cases,
decontamination through formaldehyde vapours is effective. Vapours are produced by the
evaporation of formaline or depolymerization of paraformaldehyde. In both cases, a vapour
concentration of at least 0.05 g of formaldehyde per cubic metre is required.

12.1 INFORMATION ON DECONTAMINATION WITH FORMALDEHYDE

CAUTION
Formaldehyde vapours are explosive at 75% concentration in dry air; its ignition point is at
430 °C. Autoignition temperature of paraformaldehyde is at 300 °C.
Calculate the volume of the overall dimensions of the cabinet.

Calculate the amount of paraformaldehyde required by multiplying the overall volume of the cabinet
by 10.6 g/m3 or the amount of formaline by multiplying the overall volume of the cabinet by 6
ml/m3.

If the cabinet has an exhaust duct, it shall be equipped with a damper, and both must be gas tight. If
the duct is more than 3 m long, additional formaldehyde may be needed to compensate for the
increased volume. If the cabinet exhaust flow is conveyed into a recirculating central system,
disconnect the duct from such system and seal it by means of plastic film and tape.

If the cabinet exhaust air is discharged into the room, seal the exhaust port by means of a suitable
cover, which shall be connected to a flexible hose in order to exhaust gas after decontamination.
During decontamination, the end of such hose shall be sealed. The hose shall be directed into a hood
exhaust system or placed out of a window to exhaust the gas outside. When formaldehyde gases
cannot be discharged, an appropriate neutralizing device shall be fitted on the exhaust port.

To make the liquid evaporate, use a thermostatically controlled plate placed on the working surface.
Depolymerization can also be done by using a hot air jet.

On the cabinet working surface, place a hot plate with a breaker of water and temperature and
humidity indicators.

Do not connect anything to the cabinet internal electric outlet (which must not be operational).

Close the front panel of the working area using plastic film and tape and seal electrical cord exit
carefully.

Set temperature and humidity inside the cabinet at 21 °C (or higher) and 60-85% respectively. Use
the hot plate to heat the breaker of water until the desired temperature and humidity are achieved.

During decontamination, turn on – at least 4 times – the cabinet blowers at regular intervals for 10-
15 seconds.

When the substance used for decontamination is over, disconnect the heating equipment from the
electrical outlet. Let the disinfectant act for at least 2 hours, better overnight.

Open the exhaust hose, turn on the cabinet blower and remove tape from the bottom of the plastic
film covering the front opening access.

It is advisable to ventilate the cabinet for at least one hour. To accelerate exhaust, the relating
pushbutton can be activated.

During decontamination, the use of respiratory protections for personnel is recommended.
