1. Drill
a. 99+___= 200
b. 5 is a factor of ____.
c. __is the capital city of
the Philippines.
d. ____is multiple of 11.
e. ___+___+___+___=24

1. a, 1, b, 3, c, 5,d, ___,___,___
2. df, ddff, dddfff, ___,___,___
3. 15, 20, 25, 30, ____,___,___

B. Motivation

Motivation:
Ask: Who will give you your allowance? How much was it? Did you spend
them all? Why or why not? What character traits did you show?
Problem Opener:
1. Present the
problem
2. Let the pupils read and analyze the problem presented.
3. Let them answer /solve the problem.

C. Presentation

Carla received a weekly of Php250.00 from her parents. She wants to save
some money for her future use. On Monday, she deposited twice as much on
Tuesday and Friday. How much did Carla deposit? Expected answer
D. Discussion/Abstraction

To solve a word problem using working backwards strategy, study the following
statement below:

⮚ Find the solution to a problem by starting with the answer and using inverse
operations to undo the steps stated in the problem.
e.g. a + b = c : c–a=b
8 + 7 = 15 : 15 - 8 = 7

⮚ The answer is found by starting with the end result and working back to the
beginning.
Example problem:
The final cost of Bob's bicycle was Php194. This included a tax of Php12.25.
What was the original price of the bicycle without the tax?
The final cost of Bob's bicycle was Php194. This included a tax of Php12.25.
What was the original price of the bicycle without the tax?
How will you solve this problem?
Let n be the original price of the bike. So, n + P12.25 =P194
You can work backwards. Subtract the tax from the final cost of the bicycle
to find the original price of the bicycle without the tax.
Let us answer another problem.
Brian gave 10 stamps from his collection to Sam. Then, he gave 14 stamps to
Kathy and 6 stamps to Grace. He still had 275 stamps. How many stamps were in
Brian’s collection to begin with?

Let n be the total stamps collection

N -10 -14-6 = 275
Starting with the end result 275 and use addition as an inverse operation of
subtraction, so,
275 + 6 + 14 + 10 =305
Brian’s stamps collection at the beginning is 305.

E. Exercises

Solve the following problems using backward strategy.

1. Mrs. Allen baked some cookies for the school bake sale. Franco bought 3 of the
cookies and Chandra bought 2. Mr. Walker bought 1 dozen of the cookies. William
and Star each bought 6 cookies. Then Ms. Porter bought 4 of the cookies. That left
only 3 cookies for Scott to buy. How many cookies did Mrs. Allen bake for the sale?
2. Paula went shopping at a department store. She bought 1 CD on sale for P20.75, a
notebook for p40.25, and a bottle of shampoo for P89.00. When Paula paid for her
purchases, the cashier gave her P50.00 in change. How much money did Paula give
the cashier?

F. Generalization

Summarizing the Lesson

To solve a problem using working backwards strategy

students find the solution to a problem by starting with the answer and
using inverse operations to undo the steps stated in the problem.
e.g. a + b = c
: c–a=b
students found the answer by starting with the end result and working back
to the beginning.
G. Application

Performing the Activities

Group the pupils into 4.
Let them answer this problem. Write your solution and present your work
when all the groups have done.

At a bake sale Mrs.Galido sold 6 dozen puto cheese before lunch. After lunch,
Mrs. Galido sold another 7 dozen puto cheese. When it was time to leave,
they had 2 dozen puto cheese left. How many puto cheese did she have at the
start of the bake sale?

Sol. 2 +7 + 6 = 15
She had 15 dozen of cookies at first
H. Evaluation
Solve the following problems using backward strategy. Show your solution.
1.When Jose rode on a bus, he noticed some people sitting. At the next bus
stop, 5 people got on and 2 people got off. Two stops later, 7 people got on.
All 15 people got off the bus at the terminal station. How many people were
in the bus when Jose got on the bus?
2.Sarah got on the school bus. At the stop after Sarah’s, 7 students got on.
Five students got on the bus at the next stop. At the last stop before the
school, 9 students got on. When the bus arrived at school, 38 students got off.
How many students were already on the bus when Sarah got on?
I. Agreement/Assignment
Solve the following problems using backward strategy. Show your solution.
Arnel sorted pens in small boxes. He put 1 pencil in the first box, 3 pencils in the
second box, 9 pencils in the third box, and 27 pencils in the fourth box. If the same
pattern was followed, how many pencils did Arnel place in the boxes?
