The User Manual is specifically designed to instruct in the operation and function of the
S@feflow cabinets.
This manual must be thoroughly read and understood before you operate this equipment,
so that you become familiar with its operation and functions.
While every care has been taken in the production of this manual, it is not designed to
act as your procedure manual.
Information in this manual is correct to the best of our belief at time of original
publication. The manual is not designed to be definitive or act as a substitute for
validation of your own procedures.
CAUTION: the User Manual must be always available at installation site and will
be never parted from the cabinet in case of displacement to other laboratories.

1. ASSESSMENT OF RISKS
The instructions given in this Operating Manual shall be read carefully before switching
the system on. The Operating Manual shall never be parted from S@feflow cabinets.

This manual covers an open fronted, vertical laminar flow safety cabinet designed to
protect the worker and the environment against the risks that might occur during
handling biological agents.
For fuel gas service connected to the Bunsen burner, the relevant chapter 4.1
shall be carefully referred to in order to avoid fuel gas leaks and fire and/or
explosion risks connected therewith.
The cabinet is equipped with a front window made of laminated safety glass, which is
electrically operated by up and down keys located on the control panel.
Never leave a hand under the front window when operating the sliding mechanism.

Risks associated with handling, installation, positioning, connections to the


mains and to the fluid lines as well as installation of optional and standard
accessories are described at paragraph 3 and paragraph 4.
WARNING
Biologically safe conditions are NO longer ensured when audible and visible
alarm devices turn on. In such a case, close the front access and contact the
servicing organization.
The UV prearranged socket shall be plugged in only with the UV kit supplied as an
optional extra.
The power point socket SHALL NOT be plugged in with any UV fixture!
WARNING
The correct use of UV socket and power point socket above mentioned is mandatory.

THE MANUFACTURER SHALL BE SAVED HARMLESS FROM ANY CIVIL AND PENAL
LIABILITY FOR MISUSE, FAULTY OPERATION, TAMPERING, AND IN GENERAL

2. RULING STANDARDS AND DEFINITIONS


Safeflow cabinet complies with EN 12469: 2000 standards covering Microbiological Safety
Cabinets (MSC) suitable for handling biological agents.
CAUTION
In order to assess which one of etiological agents can be handled in a class II
cabinet is imperative to make reference to the listed classes of National
protocol.
Safeflow is a class II type A cabinet designed to recycle the exhaust air into the
laboratory however if an exhaust additional filter or if the exhaust air must be ducted
outside the laboratory, purposely designed accessories (extraction kits) may be supplied
with, or for already installed cabinets.

3. INSTALLATION
CAUTION
Handling of the cabinet for installation and connections to the mains and to the fluid lines
shall be carried out solely by authorized personnel, following the instruction of this
chapter.
The ruling directives for safe handling of heavy objects and for installation of technical
equipment shall be observed.

3.1 UNPACKING

Remove the wrapping film.


WARNING: most damages occur while unpacking. Verify that no damage has occurred
during transport. Should any problem arise, please contact your Dealer or BIO AIR
Instruments.

3.2 HANDLING

A lift truck or hand operated lift truck shall be used for cabinet displacements. It is
imperative to lift the cabinet with its original pallet to prevent structural strength.
Positioning shall be carried out when the base of the cabinet is at the same level of the
laboratory bench top or of its stand (if supplied) by pushing to slide the cabinet to final
position. See 3.4 for information on the stand.

3.3 INSTALLATION SITE

The cabinet shall be installed in an air-draft free room to avoid interference with the air
barrier crossing the front aperture.
Distance between the room ceiling and the exhaust outlet shall be not less than 300 mm.
Air Conditioning grilles and aisles where foot traffic is intense may have a negative
influence to the cabinet ventilation.
Before positioning the cabinet on the bench top check its loading capacity (see 3.2).
The cabinet shall be carefully levelled.

3.3.1 SIDE BAFFLES

The Safeflow 1.8 cabinet (only) is equipped with removable side baffles positioned in
both right and left side of working chamber, between chamber sidewalls and cabinet
frame, at working surface level ( see pic. 1 ).
Cabinet performances are not guaranteed without side baffles or with baffles incorrect
position.
Please check side baffles correct position before installation.

3.4 FLOOR STAND


On request a floor stand is supplied disassembled.
A complete floor stand assembling instructions are included within the packing. Follow
those instructions for a correct assembly.

3.5 INSTALLATION OF GERMICIDAL LAMP

On request a UV lamp kit is supplied.

Put the lamp kit on the work surface, insert the connector in the relevant socket located
on the back wall, left hand side inside the cabinet. The UV lamp can be operated and
time programmed from the control panel only if the front window is fully closed (see
control panel paragraph).
The lighting lamps can’t work when UV lamp is lit. The germicidal effect of the UV lamp is
reduced after approx 1000 run hours.

CAUTION
UV RAYS MAY CAUSE ERYTHEMA AND CONJUNCTIVITIS HENCE EXPOSURE OF
SKIN AND EYES MUST BE AVOIDED.

3.6 INSTALLATION OF DECONTAMINATION KIT


The cabinet is prearranged for the use of the formalin vaporiser that shall be put on the
work surface and the connector of the power cord shall be plugged in the socket located
on the back wall, left hand side inside the cabinet. The decontamination kit is supplied on
request and its operating mode is described at Decontamination paragraph and/or on
dedicated instruction leaflet.
CAUTION
FORMALIN VAPOURS ARE HARMFUL: CONSULT SAFETY OFFICER FOR
PRECAUTIONS REQUESTED BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

3.7 INSTALLATION OF EXHAUST COMPONENTS


Exhaust components allow different configuration for handling the air leaving the cabinet
according to the following list:
– Additional fan kit for short ducting the air out of the laboratory or to compensate
the drop of pressure across a second in line exhaust HEPA filter.
– Transition kit for ducting the formalin vapour out the laboratory or to connect the
cabinet to a remote extract fan.
Detailed instructions for installation and for the operating mode are delivered with the
kits supplied according to the customer’s needs.
The choice of the various exhaust kits depends on the examen of laboratory configuration
as far as the installation site is concerned and also depends on type of work carried out
with the cabinet.

4. CONNECTIONS

4.1 ELECTRICAL CONNECTION


It is recommended to connect the cabinet to a dedicated power line.
The cabinet is fitted with a power cord to be connected to the mains through a
plug and socket. The socket should be placed near the cabinet according to the
length of the power cord (no extensions are permitted) and should be visible.
The cord is to be equipped with a 2P + T, 16A 230V~ plug. This operation should be
carried out by qualified personnel.
Make sure that the voltage indicated on the cabinet tag is consistent with the mains
voltage.
Grounding must comply with local regulations.

Characteristics of the power cord:


“HAR” H 05 VV-F ( PVC) certified cable with three 1.5 mm2 cross section wires.
If the cord should be replaced, the length of the earth wire shall be such that it is the last
to break in case of pulling or failure of clamping points. Do not change the length of the
original power cord.
The identification colours of the supply cord wires are:
- brown = live
- blue = neutral
- yellow/green = grounding

4.2 FLUID CONNECTIONS


Fittings for fluid connection are located at top of cabinet and are duly labelled for air,
inert gas or vacuum and for flammable gas. Connection must be done with flexible hoses
clamped with collars.

4.3 FINAL PROCEDURES


Once installation is over, carry out the final procedures before operating the cabinet:
– make sure that remote circuit breaker is turned off;
– remove the working surface;
– carefully clean the cabinet inside and outside following instructions reported at
relevant paragraph. Cleaning products and solvents aggressive to paint shall be
avoided.
– put the working surface in its position after checking that no foreign body has
slipped under it (use lint-free clothes);
– decontaminate the inner surfaces by swabbing with a disinfectant chlorine free
product.
– stick the BIOHAZARD symbol on the outside part of the door of the room where the
cabinet operates;

– ask your Dealer or EUROCLONE for commissioning.

5. GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

5.1 OPERATING PRINCIPLE


The cabinet work on a controlled ventilation principle. The cabinet is equipped with one
(two) fan(s) for handling 100% of the air volume; approx 70% is recirculated through a
main HEPA filter mounted in the roof of the work area while 30% creates an inward air
flow at front access of the cabinet than is exhausted through a second HEPA filter.
The ventilation system is self balancing to obtain sterile conditions by the unidirectional
down flow and operator protection by the inward flow.
The ventilation system maintains the inner space of the cabinet in negative pressure to
the laboratory so that leakage of contaminated air is not possible thus eliminating the
need of leakage test of the cabinet structure once installed.
The control panel allows full control of the ventilation system including the alarm devices
and the electrically operated outfits (see paragraph 8).

5.2 VENTILATION CONTROL AND ALARMS


The fan(s) of the cabinet is (are) automatically controlled to compensate the drop of
pressure across HEPA filters due to the progressive dirtying and voltage fluctuations of
the mains power supply.
After a power failure when the fan is operating, reconnection of the power will cause the
fan to start at the same rate flow.
The alarm devices have been considered the primary factor of the safe performance.
As soon as the ventilation rate of the recirculating down flow and/or inward flow deviate
out of the set points, the alarms, visible and audible, will trip.
In addition a third alarm is activated whenever the front sliding window is not positioned
at the correct safe height.

5.3 FILTRATION
High Efficiency Particulate Air filter (HEPA) of standard size but different drop of pressure
at nominal rate flow are installed inside the cabinet. Filter efficiency is not less than
99,995% measured with MPPS method. Access of both filters is from the front of the
cabinet but the exhaust filter can be reached from the top to make easy the possible
installation of a second exhaust filter (see 3.7 and 6.6 paragraphs).

6. STANDARDS OUTFITS

6.1 FRONT SLIDING WINDOW


The sliding window slides upwards and downwards by an electric motor operated from
the control panel. The window limit switches allow three fixed positions: fully open, work
height and fully closed; the window stops automatically at the work height.
Any other position can be obtained by releasing the keys on the control panel, but should
the cabinet be set on Mode 1, the window alarm will trip.
The front window mechanism also allows the compression of the peripheral gasket at
work height and at fully closed position.
The glass of the window is of laminated type according to the safety prescriptions.

6.2 LIGHTING
Fluorescent tubes located outside the contaminated area provide an average lighting
level of not less than 800 lux over most of the work area.

6.3 FLAMMABLE GAS INLET


Gas is supplied via a solenoid valve to a tap located on the backwall inside the cabinet.
The solenoid valve permits gas to flow only when the cabinet operates in safe condition
namely when the ventilation is at correct rate.
This safety measure prevents HEPA filter damage and possible risk of fire.
The gas tap must be always closed when gas is not in use.
The manufacturer declines all responsibility for damages deriving from disregard of such
safety measure.

6.4 SERVICE TAP


In addition to combustible gas tap a second tap directly connected with the inlet fitting
(nipple) at cabinet top is provided.
This tap can be used with compressed air, inert gas or vacuum.

6.5. MAINS SOCKET


The service mains socket is located on the back wall of the cabinet.
Equipment in excess of 3 Ampère. should not be connected to this socket; the socket
circuit is protected by a dedicated fuse (see fuse list and location).

6.6 SAMPLE PORTS


Sample ports are provided for taking air samples from the filter plenum for pressure and
challenge aerosol concentration measurements.
To make connection with the instruments an hose of 8 mm inner diameter should be
used.
The main sample port is located inside the cabinet, underneath the work surface at left
hand side.
Additional sample ports are prearranged on top of the cabinet and are connected to the
intermediate plenum only when a second in line HEPA filter is installed. When not in use
these sample ports must be kept sealed because they are potentially contaminated.

6.7 VOLTAGE-FREE CONTACT TO CONTROL REMOTE DEVICES


A dedicated relay on the power board of the CPU is wired with a connector on the top of
the front, box-like panel; only for dedicated EUROCLONE accessories.
Max voltage: 24 V., Max current: 1 A

The contact turns on when the cabinet is operating.

7. OPTIONAL OUTFITS
Optional outfits when supplied are delivered with specific instruction leaflet however basic
notices are given on installation paragraph 3.

7.1 FLOOR STAND see 3.4 paragraph.

7.2 GERMICIDAL LAMP see 3.5 paragraph.

7.3 DECONTAMINATION KIT see 3.6 paragraph.

7.4 EXHAUST KITS see 3.7 paragraph.

7.5 ALTERNATIVE WORK SURFACE


Standard work surface is of perforated type however can be replaced on request with a
stainless steel tray.
In both cases spilt liquids are collected in an easy to clean sump mode of stainless steel,
located underneath the work surface.

NOTE:

The S@feflow cabinets version B.S. are equipped with two HEPA filters in the
exhaust outlet.
Information about HEPA filters of S@felow B.S. version are reported at
paragraph 12.5 at this manual and for Servicing at paragraph 6.1, 6.1.1,6.1.2 of
the part two of the manual.

8. DESCRIPTION OF THE OPERATIVE SYSTEM


Microprocessor based control process unit (CPU) which includes the logic and power
boards is provided to rule all functions of the cabinet.
To meet the requirement of the EN 12469: 2000 standard for MSC the access to the
cabinet functions is protected to prevent unauthorised use.

8.1 Functions of the normal use of the cabinet for laboratory personnel,
particularly switch on and switch off the fan, are activated by entering a
(configurable) pin code always required through the display of the control panel
with the message “ENTER OPERATOR PIN CODE”; OPERATORS are USER and
SERVICE subjects.

8.2 In addition functions reserved to the service personnel such as set


up of parameters are activated by entering a “CALIBRATION” pin code.

When the cabinet is delivered to the customer, the parameters set up is performed at
factory quality control dept., thus the cabinet is ready to work.

8.3 The display shows the basic operative configurations through the
“MAIN” message for selecting:

– M1: SAFE OPERATING MODE (cabinet normal use)


– M2: STAND BY MODE (ventilation is off)
– VAP: Vaporisation cycle
– I: Selection of informations
– Tool icon: for setting parameters
– Interrupted circle icon: to switch off the cabinet.
After pressing the key relevant with the icon, a number of messages enable the
operators to utilize the cabinet in the selected mode with operative details.

8.4 The main features of the operative system that is connected with

intrinsic biological safety of the cabinet is the accurate ventilation control


associated with a reliable monitoring system.

The ventilation control system maintains the recirculating and exhaust mass air flow at
prescribed rates by compensating the progressive drop of pressure across the filters for
the dirtying of the media and variations of the mains voltage.

8.5 If ventilation parameters deviate from the prescribed rates the


alarm devices warn the operator by an audible tone and by a pilot light. During
the starting up of the cabinet, the audible tone can be silenced by pressing the
key MUTE for 30 seconds.

The monitoring system enables the operator to check the ventilation parameters and the
safe operating mode on the display.
If an alarm condition is detected the cause of the alarm will be reported on the display.

8.6 To meet the requirement of the EN 12469: 2000 standard in the


event of power failure or power disconnection while the cabinet is operating in
Mode 1, reconnection of the power will cause the fan to start at the same
operative conditions.

All the informations released with this paragraph are intended as preliminary for better
understanding the content of the next paragraph.

8.7 The front window is electrically operated as described at paragraph


6.1.

In addition to the manual function by the keys corresponding to the icon


showing directional arrows, the window moves automatically in some
operational circumstances.

To stop the window moving for emergency situation press any key of the
control panel.

Never leave a hand under the front window when operating the sliding
mechanism.

A message advises the operator then press the key window up or down to
restore the function.

9. CONTROL PANEL CONSOLE

9.1 This paragraph contains the detailed instructions of the procedures to be


followed to activate the functions of the cabinet with the exception of those regarding
calibration and set up of ventilation parameters.

9.2 CONTROL PANEL KEYS

The keys around the video screen are consistent with the icons and/or messages that will
appear close to the edges of the screen.
The panel includes the numeric pad with the key “DELETE” to clear pad setting and the
key ENTER to store data, the key MENU to return back to previous displayed message,
the key MUTE to get the buzzer of the alarm device silenced and two keys “ARROWS” to
scroll up and down the displayed message and to adjust the visual angle of the display.
REMARKS: The key MENU shall be used whenever the icon where an arrow-up is
depicted does not appear, thus not enabling the use of the corresponding key. (Arrow up
key has the same function than MENU).

9.2.1 CONTROL PANEL DISPLAYED FUNCTIONS


Every time the cabinet is reconnected to the mains supply (through the remote circuit
breaker) the displayed function is AUTOTEST (Fig. 1). Should some cheek of the list fail
the display turns to next (Fig. 2) that enables the operator to go on or to stop and call
service.
Should the AUTOTEST be fully positive the display will show “PRESS ANY KEY TO START”
(Fig. 3).

REMARKS: The procedure AUTOTEST is not repeated if the cabinet remains connected to
the mains supply, consequently the first message always displays “PRESS ANY KEY TO
START” and the cabinet is ready to operate.

9.3 By pressing any key the display shows ENTERING OPERATOR PIN
CODE (Fig. 4).

The access to the cabinet operations is allowed by entering one of this codes:

9.3.1 USER PIN CODE: 1111 (for personnel dealing with biological
work)

9.3.2 SERVICE PIN CODE: 0000 (for service personnel)


Service pin code gives the same access of the user pin code plus the access for
setting maintenance parameters.

9.3.3 CALIBRATION PIN CODE (for personnel dealing with cabinet


commissioning and routine control test).
Calibration pin code gives full access to the cabinet functions.

9.4 After entering the pin code the display will show the message MAIN
(Fig. 5); the seven icons enable the operator to select:

– M1: Operative Mode 1


– M2: Operative Mode 2
– I: Informative functions
– VAP: Automatic decontamination

9.5 By pressing the key M1 (Fig. 5) the cabinet is ready to operate and
the window (if closed) will be automatically positioned at operative safe level.

The message displayed during the start up are: “STARTING UP” (Fig. 6), “AUTOTUNING”
(Fig. 7), “SAFE OPERATING” (Fig. 8) which includes the ventilation parameters.
During the start up procedure the audible alarm can be muted by the relevant key on the
pad.
The cabinet outfits can be activated by pressing the keys consistent with the icons where
the outfits are depitched; the gas solenoid valve can be activated only as soon as the
cabinet is in “SAFE OPERATING” and will be automatically disactivated whenever an
alarm condition occurs (must be resetted by the operator when the alarm condition is
over).
A number of leds corresponding to the functions will be lit when the relevant function is
on.
If an alarm condition happenss the display turns on “UNSAFE” with the message showing
the alarm events (low exhaust rate, high ventilation rate, window incorrectly positioned)
(Fig. 9) and both visual and audible alarm devices turn on.

9.6 To switch off the cabinet press the key corresponding to the icon with
interrupted circle.
The display will ask to enter pin code and after pressing the key “ENTER” the display ask
for UV connection and for window position (Figg. 10, 11).
Should the operator’s answer is “NO” in both case, by pressing the relevant keys the
display turns on “PRESS ANY KEY” (Fig. 3).

9.7 After following the procedure 9.3 and 9.4 press the key consistent with the
key M2 to put the cabinet in “Stand by” mode (Fig. 12). Cabinet fan and solenoid valve
are disactivated, the operator can move the window to get full access for cleaning and
disinfection procedures and/or positioning instruments.
The outfits that can be activated are:
– Flourescent lamp or UV light that are interlocked to prevent contemporary emission
– Service Socket
– Electric window.
REMARKS: The cabinet is prearranged for the use of UV light. Kit available as optional
extra.
To exit from “STAND BY” mode, switch off the cabinet as per para. 9.6.

9.8 The cabinet is prearranged for the use of the UV lamp kit through the CPU
that means full control of the operations in safe condition.
The UV emission can be obtained manually or automatically time programmed mode.
The UV kit is equipped with a dedicated power cord whose connector has to be plugged
into the socket located at left hand wall of the inner cabinet chamber.
When the operator follows the procedure 9.6 to switch off the cabinet, press the key
“YES”; the display asks for connecting UV lamp (Fig. 10). The window will automatically
be lifted to enable the operator to plug-in the UV lamp connector. The display will show
“MOVING WINDOW UP”, “WAITING FOR UV LAMP” and when the kit is connected the
display turns on “UV LAMP DETECTED – PRESS ENTER”. With the next message the
display asks to close the window (Fig. 11); by pressing “YES” the cabinet display advises
that the window is moving down, then returns to video page PRESS ANY KEY.
The UV lamp can be switched ON and OFF manually only if the operator follows the
procedure to go to the video page MAIN and pressing M2 (STAND BY) to get the access
to the key consistent with the icon UV (Fig. 12).
The UV lamp can be switched ON and OFF automatically following a procedure to go to
the video page MAIN. Pressing the key of the icon where tools are depicted, the video
page “SETTING” will appear showing a icon where the UV symbol is depicted (Fig. 13).
By pressing the relevant key the video page will show the icon for setting the timer (top
left hand) and the time switching (hours - minutes top right hand) (Fig. 14).
By pressing the numeric pad store the data with “ENTER” for every parameter then press
the key “ON” at bottom left hand of the screen (Fig. 14).
By pressing the key “ARROW UP”, the display returns to video page “SETTING” then
press the arrow up key of this page to return to “MAIN”. By pressing the key of the icon
of the interrupted circle the display will return to “PRESS ANY KEY TO START” with
additional message of “UV CONNECTED” and time parameters, including the actual time.
When the UV lamp is activated at fixed time, the UV led on control panel is lit and the
display will show “UV AUTORUN” with time parameters and the information to switch off
the UV lamp if requested (Fig. 15).
When the UV lamp run time is elapsed the display shows the message “PRESS ENTER TO
EXIT” then “ENTER OPERATOR PIN CODE TO ACKNOWLEDGE REPORT”, to return to BIO
AIR PRESS ANY KEY TO START.

To get the same switching time and run time of the UV lamp or to store new data, the
setting procedure must be repeated and confirmed by changing the icon OFF (Fig 16)
with icon ON (Fig. 14). In this case the last message will be: BIO AIR PRESS ANY KEY TO
START / UVCONNECTED / UV RUNNING AT… (Fig. 17).

9.9 The video page SETTING (Fig. 13), beside the already mentioned icons for
UV time programming includes:
– Icon where a clock is depitched to set the data and the actual time (Fig. 18).
– Icon where a pad lock is depitched to set a new password (Fig. 19).
– Icon “TUNE” to set the visual angle of the display and for changing the default time to
maintain the audible alarm silenced during the start up of the cabinet (Fig. 20).
Follow the instructions of the display to store data through the numeric pad and the key
enter.
The visual angle is changed by short impulse on the keys.

9.10 From the video page MAIN (procedure 9.3 - 9.4) by pressing the
key consistent with the icon I (informative) the display shows “SELECT INFO”
that enables the operator to approach the information about the usable run
hours of UV lamp, HEPA filters and cabinet by pressing the relevant keys (Figg.
21, 22, 23).

If the actual run hours for HEPA and UV exceed those estimated and stored in the CPU
(see video page), a message will be displayed in SAFE OPERATION message space and in
UV time setting.
The icon at left hand bottom corner corresponds to the key that shows on the display the
software revision number.
The date displayed for UV lamp and HEPA may be changed after the replacement with
new data by pressing the key corresponding with the icon SET only by service personnel
after entering a service pin code.
The cabinet run hours can’t be cleared.
The icon showing an arrow-up at bottom right hand corner of the displays is consistent
with the key that enables the operator to return on the previous displayed data.

9.11 From the video page MAIN, by pressing the key VAP (Fig. 5) the
decontamination procedure by fumigation of formalin may be carry out.

The automatic decontamination is a function controlled by the processor of the cabinet


providing that the special vapouriser, offered as optional extra, is supplied with the
cabinet or afterwards.
The function is activated by pressing the key VAP, the decontamination cycle will be
completed automatically and the cycle steps will be displayed while the process is going
on. The set up of the cabinet before starting the VAP function requires the installation of
the extraction rigs to exhaust formalin vapours out of laboratory. For detailed information
read instructions of paragraph 10.1, 11.1.
Should the use of extraction rigs is impracticable the use of special canister, housing
specific carbon filter has to be accounted. (See paragraph 11.3)
To complete the set up, put the vaporiser filled with 23 ml of formalin (40%) and with
the same amount of distilled water on the work surface and plug-in the vaporiser power
cord into the receptacle on the left hand side of the work chamber.
The decontamination cycle is divided in the following steps:
• Vaporisation – estimated time 15÷30 minutes;
• Recirculation of the vapours – default time 20 seconds;
• Stand by – estimated time 4 hours;
• Purge – estimated time 6 ÷ 8 hours.
When the key VAP is pressed the display turns on VAP OPTION (Fig. 24) that shows the
icon run and a second icon at right hand of the screen to select time of the cycle.
Pressing the corresponding key the following display (Fig. 25) enables the operator to set
by the numeric pad the decontamination time for each step of the cycle if not already set
or if the previous setting has to be changed. Press RUN to get next message (Fig. 26),
press ENTER to store data.
After setting or confirmation of the time parameters operator may proceed by pressing
the key RUN to get the display VAP CHECK LIST (Fig. 27). Should the check list be
confirmed the operator may press the key corresponding to the icon at right top corner of
the display for definitive start of the VAP procedure. The front window will be closed
automatically.
During the progress of the VAP cycle the display (Fig. 28) with four horizontal bargraph
shows the elapsed time of each step of the cycle.

The purging phase can’t be eliminated because the formalin vapour have to be exhausted
before opening the front window.
When purging time is elapsed the fan maintains the purging air flow rate and the front
window remains partially opened until operator’s intervention.
The display will show the message decontamination ended (Fig. 29); by pressing the key
“ENTER” the operator can exit by entering the pin code.
More detailed instructions to carry out the automatic decontamination cycle are released
with the supply of the VAP kit if requested.

9.12 From the video page MAIN by pressing the key corresponding to
the icon where the WORLD is depicted (Fig. 5) the service operator may change
the language of the display by pressing the keys corresponding to the icons
showing the Country symbol (Fig. 5 bis).

9.13 RULING BLACK OUT


Should a black out occur a message will be displayed with the indication of the time and
duration of the event on every video page regarding M1, M2, SETTING and VAP.
The information is displayed for short time than is stored and return when the power is
reconnected. A back up battery is provided for this function.
If the cabinet is in M1 safe operating, when the power is reconnected the fan maintains
the same rate flow. The operator may switch on again the gas solenoid valve if necessary
while other outfits are automatically reactivated.
The message of previous black out will be displayed when occurred during SAFE
OPERATIONS (Fig. 30), UV AUTORUN (Fig. 31) and during the VAP phase PURGING. The
message shall be cleared by pressing the key that switch off the cabinet to return to
"PRESS ANY KEY TO START".

10. GUIDELINES FOR CORRECT USE


All people due to use S@feflow cabinets shall be informed on relating operating
procedures and restrictions and shall be obliged to follow instructions carefully.

In order to achieve better comfort for the operators, BIO AIR will point out the
attention to the following recommendations :
 Sitting posture – an ergonomic chair (adjustable in position, height, turnable,
ecc.) should assure fully support of the body; if the chair has adjustable low back
support, match the chair backrest to support the lower back of the spine; if
different operators may use the cabinet, don’t assume the settings are properly
set for everybody; vary the leg position frequently; avoid placing objects under
the cabinet that limit the legroom.
 Working posture – keep forearm, wrist and hands aligned in a straight, neutral
position; avoid bending or angling the wrist; avoid to block the slots of the front
intake grill with the sleeves of your garment; working intensely for long time
poses risks; get up from the cabinet periodically and take brief walks.

The cabinet can operate according to restrictions prescribed by their definition (see 2.
RULING STANDARDS AND DEFINITION).
The cabinet can’t be used when fan is off, when acoustic or visual alarms are activated,
when displays do not work, when the front window is open.
The cabinet protects neither the operator nor products from contamination deriving from
massive spilling of substances or use of inadequate techniques.
The cabinet efficiency test shall be carried out – and relevant certification issued – after
installation, filters replacement, any repositioning and programmed maintenance routine.
Any work shall be carried out according to a specific programme in which working steps,
needed materials and accessories (to be put in the cabinet) are listed.
Before turning the cabinet on verify that there are no obstructions to air exhaust. The
cabinet shall be switched on at least ten minutes before starting work.
Operators’ hands and arms shall be always washed with a germicidal soap before and
after work. Operators should wear appropriate clothes, with long sleeves and elastic
cuffs, and rubber gloves.

During work, only essential materials and equipment shall be put inside the working
area, before operating the cabinet, so that nothing would pass through the front air
barrier until work is over.
Do not obstruct the slots of the front air intake grill: operators’ safety may be hampered.

Put objects at least 15 cm off from the front window and operate in the innermost part of
the working area. Try to avoid that contaminated material passes over the sterile one
when shifting it; keep contaminated material separate from sterile one. Keep sterile
material far from the working area and wastes in a back corner of the working surface.
Wait 2/3 minutes before starting work, to allow airborne contamination to be eliminated.
Activities inside the laboratory should be limited because they could alter the laminar
flow and air barrier; in such case, the operator and product protection could be
decreased. Each time doors are open and closed, draft are produced. It is consequently
advisable to put an advice board such as: “Safety cabinet on – no entrance”.
Filters progressive dirtying can be controlled through the digital display.
Once the work is over, keep the cabinet on for at least 10 minutes, so that any
contaminating substance can be removed from inside. Decontamination of inside surfaces
shall be repeated once all objects have been taken out of the cabinet. Special care should
be taken when removing cultures that have been accidentally poured inside the working
area; they could actually favour the growth of fungi and the spreading of their spores
with consequent contamination of the cabinet.
Close the front window and turn the UV lamp on, if installed.
Such guidelines should be followed at the end of each working day.
Do not use the cabinet for foreign objects storage.
For cleaning and decontamination, see next paragraph.

11. CLEANING AND DECONTAMINATION


WHEN SWABBING THE OUTER AND INNER SURFACES WITH DETERGENT OR
DISINFECTION PRODUCT THE SUPPLY POWER SHALL BE DISCONNECTED.

11.1 CLEANING
Painted surfaces can be cleaned using common detergents. Solvents or other paint-
aggressive detergents shall be avoided. Specific products are recommended for stainless
steel surfaces.
Disinfection of stainless steel interior surfaces should be carried out using specific
disinfectants and carefully following the relating instructions. Products containing chlorine
must be strictly avoided.
The inner surface of the window glass can be cleaned as follow.

11.1.1 FRONT GLASS CLEANING

operations.
