CHAPTER 1
Introduction
The Problem and Its Background
This chapter presents the background of the study, conceptual framework, objectives of the

study, hypothesis, scope and limitations, significance of the study, and definition of terms.

Background of the Study

In a society, each individual is assigned a role and responsibility that is required to be

accomplished in order to apply the knowledge and skills that have acquired from their social

environment, instructional materials, and other sources of information. The necessary knowledge

and skills must be learned and practiced to properly complete the tasks at hand (Gajendrakar, 2024).

As people gets older, their responsibilities increase due to the reason that some of them are in the

midst of attending a school, entering the workforce, or engaging in other activities that contributes

to their self-improvement, environment, and the entire world (Adil, 2023). Additionally, this makes

it more difficult to complete the tasks, particularly if there is a deadline that must be reached.

According to (Aduke, 2015), time management is the ability to plan, organize, arrange, and

keeping track of one's time helps to produce more effectively and productively. One must learn

how to maintain effective time management or having the ability to schedule tasks and create plans

in accordance with deadlines. Additionally, learning time management skills is essential because it

promotes productivity, organization, and stress-free living (Chaudhari, 2022). As a result, they can

avoid rushing against deadlines if they are able to properly manage their time. However, time

management is not always efficient due to various factors that may affect its effectiveness. Instead

of reducing stress, time management frequently makes it more difficult. As we increase in

productivity, we take on more work and experience more pressure (Jensen, 2021). Furthermore,

these factors make it challenging for people to manage their time properly, which leads to stress,

procrastination, and late submissions.

There are numerous factors which affect students' time management, such as house

responsibilities, extracurricular activities, and screen time. According to Collins English

Dictionary, house responsibilities are tasks that have to be done regularly at home. These tasks are

essential because lack of cleaning leads to negative emotions such as confusion, tension, and

irritability, while an organized home produces more positive emotions such as calmness and a

sense of well-being (Gordon, 2023). However, house responsibilities are not just about cleaning

the house. Being instructed to run an errand by family members may sometimes be unavoidable

in a household. As a result, it affects the time management of the students because they must

complete these household chores rather than following to their schedule.

Furthermore, extracurricular activities play a significant role in many individuals' lives,

especially students. Activities such as sports, clubs, volunteer work, or part-time jobs, provide

additional learning opportunities and help develop valuable skills outside of academic pursuits.

However, participation in extracurricular activities can sometimes lead to limited time since

individuals are unable to balance several obligations at once. Based on ‘The Most Important High

School Extracurricular Activities Statistics’, 57% of high school students participate in

extracurricular activities (Jannik Lindner, 2023). According to the Commission on Higher

Education (CHED) in the Philippines, 216,000 students work while they are enrolled in classes. It

represents 8 percent of all college students (Jiezzel Galleto, 2022). These students balance both
work and school, working for hours and completing challenging tasks such as homework, reviews,

and tests.

Lastly, screen time in the modern world is one of the common factors that affects a student’s

time management. The most recent statistics available indicates that teenagers use screens for

seven hours and twenty-two minutes a day. That works out to 43 percent of a teen's waking time

(Fabio Duarte, 2023). Studies have shown that excessive screen time and media multitasking can

negatively affect executive functioning, sensorimotor development, and academic outcomes.

Early screen exposure has been associated with lower cognitive abilities and academic

performance in later years.

In connection with this, the researchers chose this study to determine the factors affecting the

time management of the selected grade 11 students of Binangonan Catholic College. The

researchers have discovered a critical gap in existing research on time management, specifically

regarding whether these factors affect the time management of the respondents. For this reason,

this study will increase their understanding and awareness of various factors that may affect their

ability to manage their time. Lastly, the purpose of this study is to determine if there is a significant

relationship between the personal responsibilities, extracurricular activities, and screen time to the

time management of the selected grade 11 students.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the factors affecting the time management of the selected

Grade 11 students of Binangonan Catholic College.

Specifically, this seeks answer to the following question:

1. What are the profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 Sex;

1.2 strand?

2. What are the factors affecting their time management in terms of:

2.1 House responsibilities;

2.2 extracurricular activities and;

2.3 screen time?

3. Is there a significant difference in the factors affecting the time management of the

respondents with regard to their profile?
