Abstract

In simple terms, an online assessment defines an online evaluation of a person’s

abilities, behaviors and/or characteristics. Assessment to students in an important and

integral part of education, keep on tracking students’ progress and helps in identifying or

measuring the quality of education, including distinguishing students’ weaknesses and/or

strength and improving their education process. Online assessment is also capable of

providing significant feedback to teachers, making teacher’ work easier, effective, cheap

and not time-consuming providing the education their class and students needed,

including managing their students online. Since technology is continuously improving

and increasing for the usage and purpose of education towards students and teachers, the

proponents implemented “AERO ITX (Informative Transformative EXam)”. The

solution the proponents developed is a web-based assessment, created from HTML, CSS,

JavaScript and PHP.

The proposed system uses PHP as the database, HTML as the backbone of the

system, CSS for designs and JavaScript for the user’s input. Using the teacher’s

dashboard, teacher can add and create subjects and questions, manage students, create

lobbies, notify student view student’s profile and record the scores. The types of

questions include multiple choice, essay, find the definition, enumeration and 4pics

1word. Students can enter the lobby when teacher created and notify students for the

assessment, and once the teacher starts the lobby, students can answer the questions

provided by the teacher, to each students the question’s sequence are random to avoid

cheating, and after answering all questions the score or grade will be display. If teachers

are the one managing students, then an admin is needed to manage the teachers. Like

teacher, admin also has the capability to create subjects and assessment and provide that

information to the specific user. The proposed system serves as an online assessment to

junior high school students in Bataan Heroes College in order to assist the targeted

student’s education.

1.0 Introduction

Background of the Study

A web-based application is a program that is accessed over a network

connection using HTTP, rather than existing within a device’s memory. Web-based

applications often run inside a web browser.

Online assessment is the process of conducting a test online to gauge the

participants’ learning and mastery over a particular subject. An online assessment

may be administered with a specific intent, such as ascertaining a student’s skills,

knowledge, or learning abilities. It comprises a series of questions that assess multiple

aspects of a test-taker and are created based on the job role, level and competency

requirements. Such assessments offer an objective evaluation of an applicant’s

capabilities and predict on-the-job performance.

Assessment is one of the most common tool being used to gain knowledge

for certain problem. (Said, 2009) Assessment has a great importance in the teaching

process. It helps students to solve problems, an innovative solution, helps students to

benefit from the ideas of others through the development and build on them. It helps

the cohesion of the students and builds relationships among them and assesses the

views of others.

In totality, the proposed system will be helpful hence students are gaining

knowledge easily. Teachers can create new assessment. Edit online quiz or exam and

adding students. As a targeted business, the proponents manage to choose the

proposed system on creating an assessment entitled as “AERO ITX (Innovative

Transformative EXam)” for the school that manages the capabilities of the students

by a gaining knowledge from online assessment. Hence with the help of the project,

the students of the selected school will use the proposed system to test the knowledge

of students by answering some questions in the assessment, while teachers can create

new subjects and questions for the students to answer.

With this, the researchers are interested in the aforementioned issue. It is an

alarming event that needs to be studied. The proponents want to give and focus on

Bataan Heroes College to avoid some unnecessary trouble and give the web-based

online assessment so that students will be entertained at the same time gain

knowledge while doing so. The creation of questions and assignments by teachers can

be done quickly, and they can simultaneously distribute them to the students.

1.1 Project Context

Technology has altered the world and daily lives over the years. Computers

are becoming quicker, more portable, and more powerful than before. Technology has

made the life easier, faster, better, and more enjoyable as a result of all of these

revolutions. Integrating this AERO ITX (Innovative Transformative EXam) can assist

students in having a more advanced style of learning topics by making learning

easier, interesting, encouraging students to study, not time consuming on creating

questions and subjects, and more reliable for teachers since the proposed system does

not require to create questions by hand and individually pass it to the students and no

longer need to add the students’ scores.

Most students nowadays find reading modules, texts, and books

uninteresting, difficult to understand themes, subjects, and difficulty to focus. Some

teachers find it a hassle to create activities on paper and hand to students’ one by one,

consumption of paper is also a problem, and checking grades of all students

individually is very time-consuming. Therefore, the presented system includes a

lobby for all the participants who will take the exam or quiz, teachers can create the

lobby, subjects and questions, in addition the gimmick of 4pics 1word is included as

one of the types of questions, students can answer questions the teacher has provided

the students. All questions of each individual student are random and have a timer to

avoid cheating. The score for each student will be automatically calculated after

answering questions and display those scores by both teacher and student. The

Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

student can only see the score, but not the score of others, while teacher can see the

scores of all the students who participated upon taking the exam or quiz.

Students have the opportunity to participate in online assessment provided

by the teacher and to test it in a classroom setting. Teachers have the opportunity to

provide the students online assessment in a less exhausting way. The evolution of

technology is never-ending and will continue indefinitely. The technologies that play

the most important part in everyday lives and provide with opportunities have had a

significant impact on Human Society. Students and teachers will benefit from the

proposed system AERO ITX (Innovative Transformative EXam), which will be of

assistance if need be.

AERO ITX (Innovative Transformative Exam) is beneficial for Junior High

students and teachers in Bataan Heroes College. The system will help the users learn

more about the courses and study the subjects that are considered difficult. Teachers

can customize the delivery of assessments as per a specific subject and subcategory

with minimal input from them, thus reducing a lot of the workload.

1.2 Purpose and Description of the Project

The study intends to present a web-based online assessment that allows

students to find the best possible answer and solution to each question. Improving the

knowledge, skills and being motivated to learn. It also allows teachers to create and

customize the subjects and questions that will provide to the students and see each

student’s scores without the trouble of computing it manually.

Of course, not all questions are multiple choice, enumeration, find the

definition or essay. The new type of question teachers can choose and provide is the

gimmick of 4 pics 1 word, where students can guess the answer with only four

pictures. The purpose is to have another type of question, and have another type of

question that the student can answer. The developers added log in and sign in

mechanics in order for the users to be identify by the system before usage and for

teachers to let students join the lobby. Students can answer the questions that teachers

provided, but all questions for each student are in random order to avoid cheating or

copying from another classmate online. Questions also have a timer, and after

answering all questions, students will see the score and how student did on the

assessment.

Teachers can customize, edit, or create the questions they wanted to provide

for the students, including lobby creation. Teachers also have the rights to whoever

can be allowed or denied access in the lobby for security purposes. Teachers can

execute the lobby whenever they wanted in order to start the exam or quiz. Teachers

can also monitor the lobby to see who will participate in taking the assessment. Once

the student finished answering, the teacher can view all students’ score who

participated in taking the assessment. If teachers can add in the students in system’s

database and upon entering the lobby to take assessment, an admin is required in

order to add teachers within the system for verification.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

1.3.1 General Objective

To develop a web-based online assessment that supports learning

purposes. In addition, the system provides adequate learning opportunity. Such

system might take various forms and would include a range of assessment tools

that have each been designed and validated to serve specific purposes.

1.3.2 Specific Objectives

a) To create a webpage that allows users to register identification- upon

registration, users input personal information such as first name, last

name, middle name, id number, email, and password. The administrator

will validate the teacher-user information, and the teacher will validate the

student-user information.

b) To create a web page that requires the usage of login credentials of

the users- Logging into the system is required as a countermeasure

against unauthorized access to confidential data when a login fails

(incorrect username, email, or password) the user is denied access.

c) To create a web page that create upcoming assessment. Teachers can

create multiple assessments; new assessments will be added. Old

assessments is still available for students who need to retake a particular

assessment. Summarizing upcoming assessments is needed in order for the

“AERO ITX (Innovative Transformative EXam)” WEB-BASED ASSESSMENT FOR JUNIOR HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS
IN BATAAN HEROES COLLEGE 1-7
BATAAN HEROES COLLEGE
Business and Technology Department
Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

newly created assessment to be organized.

d) To create a web page that notifies upcoming assessment. Upon the

creation of lobby, the teacher can create a schedule for upcoming

assessments. The notification is sent by email so students can receive the

notification after the teacher sets the schedule. Once the student clicks the

notification link, students are required to log in before joining the lobby. If

the lobby is not ready, a short message will be displayed that the lobby is

not yet available.

e) To create a web page for students to answer assessment. Students,

whose entry is approved are allowed to enter the lobby. The students can

proceed to answer assessment once the lobby has started. The arrangement

of questions for each student are random. Students may answer under a

timer by the assessment. And for the students whose entry is denied,

joining a lobby will not be possible.

f) To create a web page that displays history of record outcomes. After

the students finished answering an assessment. The scores will be

displayed for viewing. The result is yet to be recorded. The teacher will be

able to view all the students score and performance. Teachers is the only

one allowed to record the students’ scores. Thus, displaying the history of

outcomes to both users.

1.4.2 Limitation of the Project

Limited image files

JPG and PNG image files are the only image files that can be inserted

into the system for the creation of 4pics 1word question type, the two image

files are the most common images used which is the reason why there is a limit

of inserting images, and the system may malfunction if there is too much

images being inserted.

Limited special characters are allowed towards assessment

Special characters (for example: *, #,&,- ,$), are not allowed upon

making assessment. Only the question mark (?) and period (.) are allowed. The

reason why limited special characters aren’t allowed is because it could interfere

with parsing a command line (or path) if they were in a filename.

Disrupted Internet Connection

When a student is answering an assessment and lost connection to the

internet. Students that stayed within the site when the connection came back, the

active assessment will still be available to answer. But if the student closes the

site when the connection came back, the student will be dismissed out of the

assessment lobby.

2.0 Review of Related Literature

2.1 Theoretical Background

This paper presents an assessment web application that helps the students

by gaining new knowledge. However, it focuses on the web application itself and

the purpose and benefits of the technology from it. Educational assessment with

technology may be either formative assessment or summative assessment.

Instructors use both types of assessment to understand student progress and

learning in the classroom.

According to k12 academics, Formative assessment is more difficult, as

the perfect form is ongoing and allows the students to show learning in different

ways depending on the learning styles. Technology has helped some teachers

make formative assessments better, particularly through the use of classroom

response systems (CRS). A CRS is a tool in which the students each have a

handheld device that partners up with the teacher's computer. The instructor then

asks multiple choice and other question types, the students answer on any

available device. Depending on the software used, the answers may then be

shown on a graph so students and teacher can see the percentage of students who

gave each answer and the teacher can focus on what went wrong.

Summative assessments are more common in classrooms and are usually

set up to be more easily graded, as they take the form of tests or projects with

specific grading schemes. One huge benefit to tech-based testing is the option to

Business and Technology Department
Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

give students immediate feedback on the given answers. When students get these

responses, students are able to keep track of the performance in the class which

can help push to improve or give confidence to the students. Technology also

allows for different kinds of summative assessment, such as digital presentations,

or anything else the teacher may come up with, which allows different students to

show what they learned more effectively. Teachers can also use technology to

post assessments via online for students. One of the main reasons that people

around the world are doing assessments is for that to enhance and to think

critically and to analyses or making interference and uses this to learn new things.

Assessment inspires individuals to ask and think of difficult questions.

According to study.com, Assessment is a key component of learning because it

helps students learn. When students are able to see the recorded performance,

students will be able to determine whether or not the course material was useful.

Assessment can also help motivate students. If the students are aware of the poor

performance, then the students may begin to work harder. However, assessment

helps teachers too. Frequent assessment allows teachers to see if this method of

teaching has been effective. It also allows teachers to ensure students learn what is

needed to be known in order to meet the course's learning objectives.

1. Education

The definition of education is the programmatic, which comes to advocate for

or prescribe a belief of what education should be or should do. A programmatic

definition is less preoccupied with what the phenomenon or language of education is

and more concerned with promulgating a particular practice of education that is

regarded as desirable. Sometimes prescriptive definition is expressed in short, clipped

sentences such as Pink Floyd’s “We don’t need no Education”.

According to Chickering & Gramson (1987), there are different perspectives

of the learning process such as learning achievement and faculty perspectives,

students are especially critical since they are ultimately the raison d’etre of the

educational endeavor.

According to Dawnson et al (2019), more pragmatically, student perspective is

especially important when new teaching approaches are used and when new

technologies are being introduced.

2. Assessment

According to edgeglosarry.org- Assessment refers to the wide variety of

methods or tools that educators use to evaluate, measure, and document the academic

readiness, learning progress, skill acquisition, or educational needs of students.

While assessments are often equated with traditional tests especially

the standardized tests developed by testing companies and administered to large

populations of students’ educators use a diverse array of assessment tools and

Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

methods to measure everything from a four-year-old’s readiness for kindergarten to a

twelfth-grade student’s comprehension of advanced physics. Just as academic lessons

have different functions, assessments are typically designed to measure specific

elements of learning, the level of knowledge a student already has about the concept

or skill the teacher is planning to teach or the ability to comprehend and analyze

different types of texts and readings.

3. Educational Based Assessment

According to oxfordbibliogrgaphies.com - educational assessment can be

defined as any effort to gather systematic evidence about the attainment of learning

goals and objectives, either at the level of the individual student or at the level of a

larger organization such as a school, district, or country This bibliography focuses on

methods for examining whether educational goals are met, rather than on the

diagnosis of learning challenges for individual students. There are two main purposes

of educational assessment in our schooling systems: accountability to ensure that

certain learning goals are attained and instructional improvement to monitor student

learning and the effectiveness of teaching practice. These two broad types of

assessments, for accountability and for instructional improvement, encompass

differing educational goals and as such may require different methods for their

development and analysis. The terms “summative” and “formative” assessment have

also been used to characterize the differences between using tests for accountability

(summative) and for improvement of instruction and learning (formative). The

resources for educational assessment have several different audiences, ranging from

the classroom teacher to research methodologists interested in the statistical models

used in large-scale assessments.

4. Junior High-School Students

The JHS program offers subjects that mandates by law including English,

Mathematics, Science, History, Filipino, MAPEH, TLE, Values Education. Students

in online schools are free to access virtual classes wherever is desired. Therefore, the

student-teacher consultations and student collaboration is easy and convenient using

course videos that replicate classroom interaction via forum system and feedback.

However, in traditional learning systems, users assume that all students learn

at the same rate. Building a class plan with a single pace in mind ignores the need for

rest of pupils, which often leads to unfulfilled potential. Some pupils are unable to

keep up with the learning pace mandated by traditional schools, or find the pace

established to be insufficiently difficult. A system of well-constructed formative and

summative assessments allows students to demonstrate their abilities and knowledge

and then reflects how close they are to meeting educational goals and standards.

Evidence from assessments can be directly beneficial to students.

A student who has the opportunity to construct individual and unique learning

environment is more likely to achieve academically. Students can learn themes and

subjects differently with online junior high school. Students have the option of

encountering a topic that comprehends fast and readily versus spending more time on

Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

a topic that is found to be more challenging.

5. Assessment Tool

Assessment tools are techniques used to measure a student’s academic

abilities, skills, and/or fluency in a given subject or to measure one’s progress toward

academic proficiency in a specific subject area. Assessments can be either formal or

informal. Informal assessments are often inference an educator draws as a function of

unsystematic observations of a student’s performance in the subject matter under

consideration. Formal assessments are objective measurements of a student’s

abilities, skills, and fluency using screening, progress monitoring, diagnosis, or

evaluation. Both types of assessments are important; however, only formal

assessments are research, or evidence- based.

Educators use assessment tools to make informed decisions regarding

strategies to enhance student learning. Recognizing the value and necessity of

objectivity in quantifying a student’s abilities, the Fuchs Research Group has

developed curriculum-based assessments in letter sound fluency, word identification

fluency, reading comprehension and kindergarten math fluency to help determine if

an intervention is needed and if so, to help define the specific nature of the

intervention that is most likely to result in a positive outcome for the student based on

assessed deficiencies.

6. Web Development

Web development, also known as website development, refers to the tasks

associated with creating, building, and maintaining websites and web applications

that run online non a browser, it may also include web design, web application,

programming, and database management. Web development is closely related to the

job of designing the features and functionality of apps. (Web design) the term

development is usually reserved for the actual construction of this of these things

(that is to say, the programming of sites).

6.1 HTML

HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is the set of markup

symbols or codes inserted into a file intended for display on the Internet.

The markup tells web browsers how to display a web page's words and

images.

Each individual piece markup code (which would fall between "<"

and ">" characters) is referred to as an element, though many people also

refer to it as a tag. Some elements come in pairs that indicate when some

display effect is to begin and when it is to end. HTML (HyperText

Markup Language) is the code that is used to structure a web page and its

content. For example, content could be structured within a set of

paragraphs, a list of bulleted points, or using images and data tables.

6.2 CSS

CSS is the language for describing the presentation of Web pages,

including colors, layout, and fonts. It allows one to adapt the presentation

to different types of devices, such as large screens, small screens, or

printers. CSS is independent of HTML and can be used with any XML-

based markup language. The separation of HTML from CSS makes it

easier to maintain sites, share style sheets across pages, and tailor pages to

different environments. This is referred to as the separation of structure

(or: content) from presentation.

6.3 JavaScript

JavaScript is a text-based programming language used both on the

client-side and server- side that allows you to make web pages interactive.

Where HTML and CSS are languages that give structure and style to web

pages, JavaScript gives web pages interactive elements that engage a user.

6.4 PHP

PHP (recursive acronym for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor) is a

widely used open sources general-purpose scripting language that is

especially suited for web development and can be embedded into HTML.

Web. It can also be used to edit or create spreadsheets, presentations, and

even videos.

7.2 Desktop

A desktop is a computer display area that represents the kinds of

objects one might find on top of physical desk, including documents,

phone books, telephones, reference sources, writing and drawing tools,

and project folders.

7.3 Smartphone/Tablet

A smartphone is a handheld electronic device that provides a

connection to a cellular network and the internet. And tablet is a wireless,

7.4 Internet

The Internet provides a capability so powerful and general that it

can be used for almost any purpose that depends on information, and it is

accessible by every individual who connects to one of its constituent

networks. It supports human communication via social media, electronic

mail (e-mail), “chat rooms,” newsgroups, and audio and video

transmission and allows people to work collaboratively at many different

locations. It supports access to digital information by many applications,

including the World Wide Web. The Internet has proved to be a spawning

ground for a large and growing number of “e-businesses” that carry out

most of their sales and services over the Internet.

8. Similar Application and Software

8.1 Quizizz

Quizziz is a Learning platform that offers multiple tools to make a

classroom fun, interactive and engaging. Quizziz is focusing to test the

knowledge of a student. It is a way of showing the progress of a student

via answering some questions within a specific time limit. However, in the

proposed system AERO ITX (Innovative Transformative EXam), it is

similar to Quizziz itself but more specific. In a way that the user is free to

choose what subject or category can be created and answered.

It presents the user with four pictures and then tasks with guessing

what specific word fits with the theme of the photos presented. AERO

ITX (Innovative Transformative EXam) possesses 4 pics 1 word as a

category when creating an assessment. It’s a simple mechanic that the

proponents have added. However, the proposed system 4 pics 1 word

doesn’t offer levels and hints per questions. It will be the same as the rest

of the question type.

8.3 Google Classroom

Google Classroom is a suite of online tools that allows teachers to

set assignments, have work submitted by students, to mark, and to return

graded papers. It was created as a way to get eliminates paper in classes

and to make digital learning possible. It was initially planned for use with

laptops in schools, such as Chrome books, in order to allow the teacher

and students to more efficiently share information and assignments.

3.0 Technical Background

3.1 Technicality of the Project

The proponents had decided with all relevant information and research.

Concluded which technology will be used. The project is prepared to be used;

the proponents will continue to look for possible ways to improve the system

development. The Aero ITX (Innovative Transformative EXam) is a web-

based system which the teachers can use to create and execute online

assessment for the students. The proponents decided to use JavaScript, PHP,

HTML and CSS as the main source code of the project.

3.2 Details of the Project

The proponents chose to use JavaScript, PHP, HTML and CSS as the main

code editor. Unlike the other Programming Applications, these programming

applications are more efficient to use for the proponents to create the proposed

system. The proponents will continuously develop and make improvements to

the system. The AERO ITX is a web-based system that targets students and

teachers as the main users. The proposed system is similar to Quizziz and

Google forms, also containing the additional gimmick of 4 pics 1 word. These

are the following technical terms that the proponents used for the project:

JavaScript, PHP, HTML and CSS. The proponents used this to create and to

run the system. To maintain, fix all the errors and to finishing the proposed

system.

3.3 How the Project will Work

The proposed system has requirements that need to be met. Once this is

resolved, the proposed system will now be operational. To begin, the proposed

system allows any devices to connect and gain access. In order to gain access,

the user is required to register. The registration processed will be determined

by the user’s status. The user will be able to register as a student or a teacher.

Users are required to register in order to log in and have access to the system.

For security reasons, teachers and students must enter the username and

password created in order to gain access and to be recognized by the system.

The teacher can access the students’ information and records but cannot

manipulate the students’ data. All data, information and records inputted will

be stored in a database. Students can answer the assessment assigned by a

teacher. The score will be displayed whilst the students are answering. After

answering, the students can view the result and performance. The results will

be recorded in the database.

1. Requirement Analysis

Every new product or service developed in any corporation is in response to a

business necessity. Despite spending a significant amount of time and money on

development, there may be a mismatch between the needed product and the result. As

a result, to avoid serious problems in the future, a focused and complete requirements

analysis is required in the early stages of every project.

2. System Design

The proponents developed a web-based system like Quizziz and Google docs

where the user will be asked to log in as a teacher or a student on order to access the

system. The interface is created to both sides of teacher and student; therefore, the

GUI is implemented to be simple, less hustle to navigate information such as

questions, assessments, and users. The proponents created the system’s diagrams such

as the DFD, CFD, HIPPO Chart and Data Dictionary.

3. Implementation to Code

The programming tools used for the proposed system are as follows:

(JavaScript, HTML, PHP and CSS). The proponents begin the process of building

and constructing the software, as well as debugging and running it as a test to see if

there are any flaws that we can or must address so that it can function properly.

A developer's role is to ensure the product's quality and functionality. The

proposed system (AERO ITX) is in its deployment phase and has tested it to ensure

that the proposed system have minimal flaws and is in the process of improvement.

5. System Deployment and Maintenance

The proposed system is ready for demonstration. Particularly for students and

teachers who are the intended users of the proposed system (AERO ITX). Teachers

and students will serve as the critics for the proposed system. The proponents will

solicit feedback from the said users. The maintenance will be linked to the users'

feedback and reports. The proponents will listen to user’s suggestion and will send a

notification. The creators will investigate and will attempt to implement the request.
