Guidelines and Mechanics of the Spelling Bee Competition

Spelling Bee Mechanics

Venue: SIS Semarang MPH


Contest Proper: 9 a.m.

Registration

● All contestants must be in the designated venue on and before 9 in the morning.
Attendance checking of the participants will start at 8.30 a.m.

Conduct Code

● The participants and spectators are expected to display politeness, courteousness,


patience, respect toward others, honesty, and good sportsmanship during the Spelling
Bee competition.

Spelling Bee Procedure

The students are divided into 3 groups:


- Group A (Primary 1 and Primary 2)
- Group B (Primary 3 and Primary 4)
- Group C (Primary 5 and Primary 6)

There will be 3 winners from each group.

The themes for the spelling words are the following: animals, fruits, places, stationery,
vegetables, and verbs.

The words will be taken from the Cambridge or Oxford dictionary.

GENERAL RULES

There will only be one round for each group following the procedure below.

1) There will be sealed envelopes shown to the student. The student should choose only
1 envelope.
● Each envelope contains 5 words from any themed spelling word list with
ascending difficulty levels.

2) When the student is called, he/she should take one envelope and hand it to the
pronouncer.

3) The student should spell ALL 5 words correctly in 3 minutes.


4) The time will be projected on the stage for transparency.

5) The timer will begin after the pronouncer says the first word.

6) The pronouncer pronounces the words one at a time.


● The pronouncer may provide one help that the student can use only once.
● The student may only choose one from the following:

“Translation please” means that the pronouncer will translate the word in Bahasa
Indonesia.
“Sentence please” means that the pronouncer will use the given word in an English
sentence.
“Synonym please” means that the pronouncer will give a synonym of the word in
English.

● It is important to note that the 3-minute spelling time will not be paused when
help is requested.
● If the student fails to spell a word twice or says PASS, he/she may continue to
spell the next word if there is still time.

7) The student is considered failed to spell when:


● he/she exceeds the designated time
● he/she uses other language besides English
● he/she misspells a word two times

8) Winners from each category will be determined from the number of correctly spelt
words with the shortest time spent.

The Clincher Round

1) In case of a tie, contestants will proceed to the clincher round to determine the winner
for the place they are competing for.
2) The student will choose an envelope containing 5 words to be spelt correctly.
3) At this point, no help is given from the pronouncer.
4) The student will be given only 3 minutes to spell all the 5 words.
5) The time will be projected on the stage for transparency.
6) After the pronouncer says the first word, the timer will begin.
7) The pronouncer pronounces the words one at a time.
8) The winner will be judged according to the number of words correctly spelt and the
time spent.
