2. Have students brainstorm about new products or services that they have thought about and would like
to see on the market. Instructors should add that it is very difficult for new products to succeed in the
marketplace. The data suggest that the probability of success is quite low. Whether in large innovative
companies such as 3M or in an individual’s garage, many products have made it all the way through
research, patenting, design, and small production runs only to fail in the end. Think about books. If
400,000 are written annually in the U.S. alone, how many sell more than 100 copies? More than 1,000?

4. A college education is a service offering. Students like to complain about their classes, but what if the
tables were turned? Instructors (with a bit of “thick skin”) could ask their students how the “optimal
college course” should be structured. What features should it contain? How should students be
assessed? What should the workload look like? Such a discussion might help students realize how hard
it is to design a challenging, yet fair and interesting, course that contains valuable learning. At the same
time, instructors might get great ideas for improving their own courses. In fact, if they modify the
current course in response to some of the ideas brought forward, that would probably be very well
received!
2. Split the class into small groups. Have each group select a service business and then identify the
“moments of truth” (text, p. 181) for that company. How should operations be designed to meet or
exceed customers’ expectations during those moments? Have each group report its ideas to the whole
class.

1. Product Design at Nautique Boat Company (7:07)
This video takes the student inside Nautique’s secret design lab. Chief designer Steve Carlton describes
the design team’s attempts to create “impactful memories” with their boats. They try to chase an
“emotional trigger” for customers. Inspiration drives sketches and models of proposed designs, which
are followed up with a 3D clay model that takes 40 hours to produce. Design software comes next to
generate all of the exact specifications. This is followed by a full-size wooden mockup of the boat.
Nautique employs 3D printers to create parts for new designs. Final prototypes are tested on Nautique’s
own lake. A crucial part of the process is communication with both the sourcing specialist and with
manufacturing to ensure that quality parts will be attainable and that the new design can be integrated
into the production system. Such communication leads to numerous adjustments through the design
process. Looking forward, Carlton expects to increasingly use virtual reality in new product designs.
Prior to showing the video, instructors might ask students from what sources they think that Nautique’s
product design team gets its inspiration for new boats (Answer: music; Nautique’s athletic team;
boating enthusiasts; and industries such as automotive, entertainment, and consumer electronics).
Afterwards, discussion could move to the broader issue of how firms can continue to innovate year
after year and keep designing products that appear “fresh” and “current.” How does an automobile or
a piece of office furniture continue to look “more modern” every year? Are consumers just looking for
change, or are there certain characteristics that make a product seem modern? When does “retro”
become “cool” instead of “old”?
The design of a cruise involves the ship itself, but also the food, entertainment, activities, and
destinations. Food and entertainment must keep passengers happy for 7–10 days and nights. The video
focuses on the design of the $400 million ships. As the premium cruise industry leader, features must
go above and beyond expectations. Celebrity strives to have the best of everything available in the
industry. The virtual reality innovation lab in Miami allows designers and managers to experience a
fully immersive virtual reality tour of a ship up to two years before being built. They can virtually walk
around to experience corridor widths, ambience, etc. Celebrity uses designers in France, Turkey,
Finland, and Miami. Designers benchmark other industries for new design ideas—truly striving to
become the first cruise line to introduce exotic features. Students should particularly enjoy this video
because of the virtual reality content. As one manager states, “It’s really cool!”
Prior to showing the video, instructors could ask students to guess how much it costs to build a large
cruise ship (Answer: $400 million). After viewing the video, discussion could head in several different
directions. Students could be asked to identify other businesses where virtual reality could be
effectively used in product design. Alternatively, students could be asked to brainstorm how they would
go about designing cruise features other than the ship itself. For example: (1) How should food menus
be designed? (2) What entertainment should be provided? (3) To which destinations should the ships
sail? Sometimes the opposite questions can lead to interesting responses: (1) What food options should
not be offered? (2) Which entertainment options should be avoided? (3) Which ports of call should be
avoided?

Toward the middle of the movie, we see the new product development process of the Hula Hoop, from
the sales pitch to the board of directors and through final acceptance by the market. It’s a fast-paced
sequence of scenes sprinkled with humor throughout.
2. The Simpsons, Season 2: “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?,” 20th Century Fox Video, 2002 (1990-1991)
Homer is put in charge of designing a new vehicle for his half-brother’s car company. Needless to say,
some of his ideas are far-fetched.
3. The Simpsons, Season 12: “HOMR,” 20th Century Fox Video, 2009 (2000-2001)
This short scene shows new product testing, culminating with Homer ignoring the food after ingesting
a hunger suppressant—not because he wasn’t hungry, but because the suppressant made him blind.

Slide 4: From the Global Company Profile, Nautique Boat Company remains number one in its
competitive market. An important reason for this success is an aggressive emphasis on new
product development, sparked by changing consumer tastes, material changes, and marine
engineering improvements. Computer-aided design (CAD) contributes significantly to
speedy development of new models while encountering relatively few problems. Boats are
produced on an assembly line, with parts being delivered on a just-in-time basis. Product
design is clearly a core element to achieving Nautique’s market-driving strategy (see Chapter
2), where the company strives to give consumers what they want before they even know they
want it.
