Self- learning Module Q3 week 8
A.Preparation

1. Drill
Give the product orally. You get one (1) point for every correct answer. The team with the
highest total points wins the game.
1) 1.2 x 5
2.) 2.5 x 8
3.) 5.12 x 4
4.) 7 x 1.3
5.) 5x 3.6
6.) 6.5 x 2
7.) 1.5 x 6
8.) 1. 9 x 7
9.) 1.2 x 1.2
10.) 3 x 2.7

2. Review
Given the measure of the radius what is its diameter?
12m, 18cm, 21.5m, 13dm, 22.3 mm

Given the measure of the diameter of the following circles what is its radius?
6.5 m, 46 cm, 22.4 m, 204 dm, 13.4 mm

B. Motivation

Motivation:
Present a picture of a coin bank.

Who has a coin bank at home?

Who practices money savings? What are your ways of savings? Where did your savings
coming from? Why is it important to have savings?
C. Presentation
Present the problem bleow.

Ally wants to reuse an old cylindrical coin bank that has a length of 10 inches and a diameter of 4 inches.
If she wants to a new look for the coin bank, how much decorative paper is needed to wrap around it?
What is asked?
What are the given facts?

What is the plan to solve the problem?

D. Discussion/Abstraction

The paper has to be a rectangle whose length is 10 inches and whose width is unknown. We have
to solve for the distance around the cylinder to know the width of the paper. Therefore the
circumference of the cylinder is unknown.

To find the circumference of a circle having a diameter of 4 inches, we compute as follows:

Formula: C = π x d or πd
C = π x d
= 3.14 x 4 inches
= 12.56 inches

You can also this formula using the radius of the circle: C = 2 x π x r . If the diameter is 4 cm,
then the radius is 2 cm, since radius is one-half of the diameter.
C = 2 x π x r or 2πr
= 2 x 3.14 x 2 inches
= 12.56 inches

We can find the circumference of a circle if its diameter or radius is given. For convenience, we
will now use π = 3.14 unless otherwise specified.

Another examples:
Find the circumference of circles below:
Given: radius is 3 dm.
So, C = 2 x π x r
= 2 x 3.14 x 3 dm
= 18.84 dm

E. Exercises

Using π = 3.14, find the circumference if radius is given

1. r = 2.5 m
2. r = 16 cm
3. r = 22 dm
4. r = 4.5 m
5. r = 10 m

Using π = 3.14, find the circumference if diameter is given

1. d = 4.5 m
2. d = 15 cm
3. d = 32 dm
4. d = 2.5 m
5. d = 12 m

F. Generalization

Lead the pupils give the following generalization by asking:

*What is the formula in finding circumference of a circle if radius is given?
*How do you find the circumference of a circle if radius is given?
G. Application

What is the importance of understanding the circumference of a circle? How can this be
applied to real life?
How do you use circumference in real life?
Estimating the wood in a tree, it may be more convenient to measure its circumference to estimate
the volume than directly measuring the tree’s diameter.

Take your height and divide it by your circumference at the waist. It should probably be >=2 for
good health.

To figure the amount of material for the wall of a cylinder you need circumference and height (or
length if cylinder is lying on its side.
