1. INTRODUCTION AND SCOPE


This document defines the standard requirements for machined metallic parts and assemblies. The intent
of this document is to standardize notes in order to simplify drawings and reduce errors.
Standard notes in Section 4.1 always apply whenever the drawing refers to this document as a
requirements document. Box-flag notes in Section 4.2 are applicable only when called out on the drawing,
or within the standard notes section of this document.
If a new design has requirements that are substantially different than the requirements of this
specification, it is recommended to place all requirements directly on the drawing rather than tailor this
specification.
In the event of a conflict between this document and the drawing, the following precedence shall be used:
1. Requirements specified on the field of the drawing
2. This specification document
3. Requirements specified in the Dimensioning and Tolerance Block (adjacent to the title block)
Unless otherwise specified in the procurement documentation authorizing hardware manufacture, the
most current revision of this specification shall be used in the manufacture of hardware.
1.1 DESIGNATION OF THIS SPECIFICATION
This document shall be applicable only when referenced on face of the drawing. Box-flag notes are
specified in Section 4.2 and are only applicable when used on the drawing, or within the standard notes
section of this document. Where multiple acceptable specifications or processes are allowed per the box-
flag notes, the manufacturer may select their preferred specification or process, unless otherwise defined
on the drawing.
The note and table below are required for designating this specification on a drawing. The Table shall be
located at the top of the first drawing sheet, directly to the right of the notes.

3. DRAWING STANDARDS (FOR INTERNAL DESIGN REFERENCE ONLY)


3.1 STANDARD FORMAT
All 2D drawings shall be generated using the Orbital ATK standard drawing format for Minimal
Dimension Drawings. Note that this format does not preclude the creation of fully-dimensioned parts.
3.2 GLOBAL PROFILE TOLERANCE
All minimally dimensioned drawings should include a tolerance block that defines the overall part profile
tolerance. For general machined parts, it is recommended to use the following default tolerances:

4.1 STANDARD NOTES
All notes included in this section apply to all drawings that reference this specification unless otherwise
specified.
1. PROPOSED CHANGES TO PROCESSES AND/OR SPECIFICATIONS REFERENCED ON
THIS DRAWING (INCLUDING SUBSTITUTIONS) MUST BE COORDINATED WITH THE
ORBITAL ATK COGNIZANT ENGINEER FOR APPROVAL.

2. ALL THREADED HOLES SHALL BE INSTALLED AS CLASS 3B INTERNAL THREADS.

3. THREADS MAY BE CUT OR FORMED.

4. HOLES THAT ARE SHOWN IN THE DIGITAL MODEL WITH A DRILL POINT MAY BE
INSTALLED WITH EITHER A DRILL POINT OR A FLAT BOTTOM. HOLES MODELED
WITH A FLAT BOTTOM SHALL BE INSTALLED WITH A FLAT BOTTOM ONLY.

5. BREAKTHROUGH OF DRILLED HOLES IS NOT PERMISSIBLE.

6. ALL DIMENSIONS APPLY AFTER SURFACE TREATMENT.

7. ALL SURFACES SHALL HAVE A SURFACE ROUGHNESS OF 63 MICRO-INCHES
