A. INTRODUCTION

Writing is one of English skills that must be learned by the students. To acquire it,
the students should get sufficient writing practices. These practices are supposed to
stimulate the students’ skill in writing and expressing thoughts in a good passage.
Without practicing, it is impossible to write well and effectively. Writing can be said
as a language skill used to communicate indirectly, whether people can’t face to face
each others. Expressing thought in writing is not easy for most people, and it plays an
important role in learning process because writers are able to explore their own
knowledge and what they are thinking about to others. According to Kevin (2009: 1),
there are ten main criteria of a good writing: a clear point, length, back up of point,
time, logical, good grammar, English, and spelling, readers become engaged, rules are
broken, influence and from their heart, not just created to profit or for gains. 1 Writing
has become central in today’s schools and universities as a measure for academic
success. Students work hard to learn how to make more informed decisions about
their writing and gain more control over improvement of English writing skill.
Writing teachers also work hard helping students write fuller, more descriptive and
specific papers.2

By its definition, writing is the production of communication, linking ideas, and

information development, or giving arguments to a particular reader or a group of
readers (Hedge, 2005). This definition implies that writing is the production of the
ideas expressed in the written form. Before producing the writing, the writer needs to
receive and process information as much as possible. This assumption is in line with
Kellogg’s ideas that writing is a major cognitive challenge, because it is at once a test
of memory, language, and thinking ability (Kellogg, 2018).3

Furthermore, Gebhard (2000: 232) explains other problems writing are: (1) some
students use ineffective strategies, (2) some students have negative attitudes about
writing, (3) Students do not always understand or pay attention to the content of the
teacher’s response to their written work. In fact, there are many kinds of writing
strategies. However, they do not choose and use one of the effective and efficient and
efficient strategies in writing. 4

A procedure text is designed to describe how something is achieved through a

sequence of actions or steps. Mark and Kathy Anderson (1997) argue that procedural
is a piece of text that give us instructions for doing something. The purpose of
procedure text type to explain how something to be done. The students can be write
procedural text easily by using generic structure and language features. This text uses
the simple present tense, often the imperative sentences. It also usually uses the
temporal conjunction, such as first, second, then, next, etc. The structural of a
procedure text consists of aim/goal (or title, materials (not required for all procedure
texts), and steps. The important of ability to write a procedure text is to describe the
procedure text. In writing a procedure text, the students should be able to write
different procedure in sequences and the students should be able to distinguish the
structure of procedure text which consists of aim/goal, materials, and steps. In is
important, because procedure text is always used in daily lives, for example the
procedure of using electronic tool etc. The purpose of the research is to find out
students’ perception in writing procedure text. If students understand how to write a
procedure text, so it will be easier to write procedure text. 5 A recent study on process
text discovered that procedure text can assist students to enhance their writing abilities
because procedure text can entice students to produce the material (Lusiana, 2013).
EFL teachers should provide materials in the form of procedural text, according to
Lusiana (2013).6

Procedure text is an English text in which the writer describes how something is
accomplished through a sequence of action or steps. According to Djuharie
(2007:38),”Procedure text is a text that gives instruction about steps how to do
something”. According to Anderson in Zaki (2014:2),”Procedure text is a text that tell
the reader or listener how to do something”. Shirin (2009:23) says,”Procedure text is a
text that shows a process in order”. According to Djuharie in Mada (2017:85),
“Procedure text is a text containing the procedure, process, mean, or steps of make do
something. From the explanation above, the writer conclude the procedure text is one
the important knowledge which explain information about how to use viewers about
goal and material to make something.8

B. LITERATURE REVIEW

According to Olice Oshima and Ann Hogue (1999: 3), writing is particularly
academic writing is not easy. It takes study and practice to develop this skill.
Therefore, the students must consider that writing is a habit in their daily life.
According to (Kellog, 2001). Writing well is a major cognitive challenge, because it is
at once a test of memory, language, and thinking ability. It demands rapid retrieval of
domain-specific knowledge about the topic from long-term memory. Crimmon (1983)
Sais that writing is hard work. Therefore, students need many practices to apply their

writing ability.

As Walsh (2010) puts it: Writing is important because it’s used extensively in
higher education and in the workplace. If students don’t know how to express
themselves in writing, they won’t be able to communicate well with professors,
employers, peers, or just about anyone else. Much of professional communication is
done in writing: proposals, memos, reports, applications, preliminary interviews, e-
mails, and more are part of the daily life of a college student or successful graduate.
Writing is a significant skill in language production. Its significance increases when it
comes to writing in English language which is extensively used for global mediation
of knowledge (Mahboob, 2014; Mansoor, 2005; Marlina & Giri, 2014; Rahman,
2002).

Siahaan and Shinoda (2008) state that a procedure text is the writer describes how
something is accomplished through a sequence of action or step.

According to Anderson in Zaki (2014:2), ”Procedure text is a text that tell the
reader or listener how to do something”. Shirin (2009:23) says,”Procedure text is a
text that shows a process in order”. According to Djuharie in Mada (2017:85),
“Procedure text is a text containing the procedure, process, mean, or steps of make do
something.

C. RESEARCH CONTEXT

1. Analysis
An analysis is a type of thinking activity that entails searching for patterns or
ways of thinking in relation to the systematic testing of something. According
to Komaruddin and Sugiono, analysis is an activity that reassembles a whole
in order to recognize signs, their relationships to one another, and their
respective functions as a single integrated whole.
2. Writing
According to Murcia in Zaki (2014:1),”Writing is an act of communication
that suggest an interactive process and takes place between the writer and
reader. It mean that the writer can connect his/her ideas or opinions between
and two people or more in writing process”. Writing is one language skill as
means of communication by someone which can express his/her idea or
information written form by arranging letter, sentence, and paragraph by using
structure and related with sentence.9
3. Procedure Text
Procedure text is a text that gives instruction about steps how to do
something”. According to Anderson in Zaki (2014:2),”Procedure text is a text
that tell the reader or listener how to do something”. Shirin (2009:23)
says,”Procedure text is a text that shows a process in order”.

D. RESEARCH QUESTION

Based on the explanation above, the researcher formulated the problem in this
research into:

1. How does the writing ability of procedure text on the 10th grade semester 1 at
MAN 1 Lampung Tengah Academic year 2022/2023

E. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

1. Time and Place of the Research

This study will be held on the 10th grade semester 1 at MAN 1 Lampung
Tengah Academic year 2022/2023.
2. Research Design
This research employed qualitative as the research design. Qualitative research
methodology is considered to be suitable when the researcher or the
investigator either investigates new field of study or intends to ascertain and
theorize prominent issues. There are many qualitative methods which are
developed to have an in depth and extensive understanding of the issues by

means of their textual interpretation and the most common types are
interviewing and observation. According to Oakley, qualitative interview is a
type of framework in which the practices and standards be not only recorded,
but also achieved, challenged and as well as reinforced. Observation is a type
of qualitative research method which not only included participant's
observation, but also covered ethnography and research work in the field. 10
3. Population and Sample
The participants in this study will be 10th grade semester 1 at MAN 1
Lampung Tengah Academic year 2022/2023.
4. Technique of Data Collecting
In conducting this study, the writer used the interview and observation. as Neil
Cowie explains in his chapter. It is used to collect information about
participants’ external behavior, which can be further explored casually in
conversation or more formally in inter- views, with questions about
participants’ inner ideas, beliefs, and values. Researchers can choose to be
‘complete observers’ and not take part in the learning or teaching phenomenon
being studied, or they can choose to take part as ‘participant observers’. Data
is created in the form of field notes.

As Keith Richards illustrates in his chapter. Interviews can be carefully

structured by pre- determined questions to elicit specific information, or be
more open to allow for generating richer insights
