CONTENT EXPLANATION
The District Magistrate of Muzaffarnagar oversaw the rescue and relief efforts which were
carried out by two battalions of NDRF, fourteen fire and rescue units of Muzaffarnagar and
adjoining districts as well as the locals. The rescuers had a hard time getting to the injured
as seven bogies of the ill-fated train had piled on each other and the whole wreck was a
tangled mass of metal.
The immediate response team of the railways at new Delhi was also alerted and a rescue
train with doctors and medical staff was dispatched to the spot. The injured were admitted
at Muzaffarnagar Medical College.
According to some eyewitness accounts, the train was travelling at high speed and the
loco pilot seemed unaware of the repair work in progress on the track. It was alleged that
the accident occurred owing to the carelessness and lack of proper communication
between the authorities and the track maintenance department.
