Section 1 - Appraisal

6 Local & NAVAREA Navigational Warnings obtained/ plotted on charts

All-important markings made on Charts
(e.g.: Pstn fixing methods / interval, watch level, clear anchor, use of echo-sounder, M/E status,
8 traffic info, No go areas, calling master, PI, wheel over position, clearing bearing/circle,
contingency anchorage, VTS reporting, abort point, tidal info, current etc)

9 Communication requirements including GMDSS Sea Area for the passage


Section 2 - Passage Requirements (Considerations made for)
1 Ship - Specific operational requirements (e.g.: STS operations/ Helicopter operations)
2 Instructions from Company/ Charterer, Sailing Instruction etc.
3 Maintaining Safe distances off the coast, ensuring sufficient sea room at all stages for safe
4 Cargo & Special Stowage/ Carriage Restrictions.
5 Load Line Requirements/ Restrictions.
6 Weather Routing & Passage Reporting (e.g.: AMVER)
7 TSS / VTS Regulatory Reporting
8 Consumables Calculations (e.g.: Fuel, Fresh Water, Lubricants, chemicals, spares etc)
9 Anchoring Locations
10 Passage speed (including Squat) and ETA Calculations
Draft restrictions (including UKC, Air Draft requirements keeping tidal info in consideration)

12 Ship Stability, Stress/ Strength, maneuvering characteristics


13 Position monitoring / Fixing Interval and methods
14 Traffic Density (Entire voyage / Specific Areas)
15 Equipment Settings (ECDIS – Safety Contours/ Safety Depths)
16 Security Matters (Transit through high Piracy areas)
17 Watch Levels (Including Rest Hour Management)
18 Reliability of Propulsion/ Steering Equipment (eg-Defects/Limitations /Characteristics)
19 Safe clearances from Navigational Hazards & Navigational Restrictions
20 All unresolved alerts noted during route validation on ECDIS discussed with Master
21 Sufficient number of applicable Log books
22 War Risk Reporting requirements are known and marked on the ECDIS
(if applicable for the voyage).
Section 3 - Environmental Considerations

2 Emission Control Area (ECA/ SECA) Limits & Fuel Changeover procedures
MARPOL Special Areas, Other Sensitive Areas or National/ Regional Requirements

4 Ship Personnel briefed regarding above regulations
5 Environmental reporting/ notification
Confirmation received from local agents if use of open loop scrubbers in terminal, ports and

Section 4 - Weather/ Conditions
Consider conditions like Abnormal Waves / Heavy wx / Ice / Currents & Tide / Storms &

Visibility.
2 Consider factors like Swell & Winds including Critical Wind Velocity
Section 5 - Contingencies
1 Reserve / Contingency / Response plans prepared
2 Emergency Anchorages
3 Notifications & Reports for contingencies
4 Any Amendments to plans
Section 6 - Other
1 Checks for new/ special requirements at Master’s discretion
