IEA Internship: sectoral and policy analysis in the Energy Modelling Office (EMO)

The International Energy Agency (IEA) is an intergovernmental organisation committed to advancing

security of energy supply, economic growth and environmental sustainability through energy policy
co-operation. The IEA operates as an autonomous body within the framework of the Organisation for
Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
The IEA Energy Modelling Office (EMO) is looking for interns at its headquartes in Paris to support
quantitative modelling for demand sectors and qualitative policy assesement. The chosen candidates
will also be involved in the production of IEA flagship publications.
Internship description
Depending on candidate profile and starting date, the successful applicants will contribute to several
work streams on the modelling office, particularly on data collection, model development, policy
analysis and further analysis tasks under supervision of IEA analysts and modellers.
The tasks include energy system analysis, modelling, policy tracking, writing analysis, preparing graphs,
data, and drafting. Modelling experience is preferred for many of the positions, where interns will work
on the Global Energy and Climate Model, working on one or more sectors, including the power sector
and the end use sectors transport, buildings, industry and behavioural aspects. Qualitative policy
tracking mainly includes the evaluation of progress on sustainable recovery policies, energy
employment or electricity access.
The modelling office team contributes to a number of key IEA publications. Some recent examples
include the Net Zero by 2050 Roadmap, the World Energy Outlook, Coal in Net Zero Transitions, the
Sustainable Recovery Tracker, the Africa Energy Outlook, and Tracking Clean Energy Progress.
Depending on the timing of the internship, interns often have opportunities to make substantive
contributions to such publications.
Requirements & Information
Interns must be enrolled as university students throughout the duration of the internship. The full-
time internship (40 hours per week) would ideally start in the first quarter of 2023 with a duration of
preferably 6 months, and no less than 4 months.
The most important requirements are an interest in energy and climate issues, demonstrated self
motiviation and the abaility to work independently, an excellent written and oral command of English
(one of the official working languages of the IEA) and demonstrated capacity to work with policy
documents, large datasets and modelling tools in Excel or other software environments. Experience
with the mentioned sectors or policy tracking and/or energy modelling and advanced data analysis
(e.g. in R or Python) would be an advantage.
Please send your application (CV and short cover letter indicating your preferred area of interest) at
your earliest convenience and at the latest December 19, 2022 COB.

IEA Internship: data modelling in the Directorate of Sustainable Technology and Outlook (STO)
The Energy Technology Perspectives (ETP) is an IEA publication focused on the technology needs and
opportunities for reaching international climate and sustainable energy goals. The report offers
analysis and advice on the clean energy technologies the world needs to meet net-zero emissions
objectives. The report’s analysis maps out the technologies needed to tackle emissions in all parts of
the energy sector, including areas where technology progress is still lacking. It also provides an
assessment of emissions from existing infrastructure and what can be done to address them.
The annual World Energy Outlook (WEO) provides an assessment of the medium- and long-term
prospects for energy markets worldwide and their broader implications. The aim is to provide
policymakers, industry and energy consumers alike with a rigorous quantitative framework for
understanding the drivers of possible future energy trends and evaluating the impact of government
policies to tackle energy-related challenges, including enhancing the security of energy supplies and
combating climate change and other environmental problems.
The STO directorate established a dedicated data working group composed of analysts and modellers
to address the need to improve data management, sharing and comparison that underpin the
modelling and analysis of the ETP and WEO publications
Internship description
As an integral part of the STO data working group work in an harmonious way with modellers, analysts
and system engineers to assist with the following tasks:
• Participate in the maintenance and development of the WEO/ETP databases
• Contribute to the integration of new data sets into the existing data infrastructure including
through the use of data science methods.
• Participate in providing guidance to analysts on data preparation and interpretation for use in
analysis and modelling.
• Participate in the production of the WEO and ETP publications and data products, via the
preparation of visuals and text.
• As needed, deliver presentations on datasets and related tools.
• Build tools in Power BI and Excel to support data checking and analysis.
• Build data pipelines to reduce the time that goes from raw data to business insight.
• Extract, disseminate and communicate data internally and to the IEA website.
Requirements & Information
The full-time internship (40 hours per week) would ideally start in the first quarter of 2023 with a
duration of preferably 6 months, and no less than 4 months.
The ideal candidate profile includes the following aspects:
• Demonstrated self-motivation and the ability to work independently.
• Interested in energy and climate issues. Knowledge of energy industry operations and
terminology would be an advantage.
• Proficient MS Office user with emphasis in Excel. VBA knowledge is a plus.
• Knowledge of query languages like SQL, PL/SQL or T-SQL. and data modelling concepts. Mainly
using MS SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL or Postgres databases.
• Knowledge of Python scripting language and/or R statistical language to analyse and explore
data. Knowledge in data visualisation packages like ggplot2 and matplotlib are a plus.
• Knowledge of data visualisation tools like Microsoft Power BI (preferably), Qlikview or Tableau.
• Knowledge of statistical and data science concepts are a plus.
• Demonstrated ability to develop detailed documentation relating to a business solution.
