Rotary Vane Technology

ABOUT US

Ing. Enea Mattei SpA is an Italian company that has been

producing air compressors since 1919. Over the years, the
company has continually evolved and is today one of the
world’s foremost companies in the compressed air sector and
the leader in the production of rotary vane compressors.

Behind the success of Mattei are the choices the company

has made in terms of design, production and marketing,
driven by the results of its continual and in-depth research
and devlopment programmes.

During these years of continual change, Mattei has been able

to adapt to the requirements of the market and through the
results of its research has created products that are always
innovative and technologically advanced.

CERTIFIED QUALITY

Quality as an integral part of all company functions and

constant improvement of all production processes so as
to always guarantee the maximum level of reliability and
satisfaction.

This, in brief, is the value and the meaning of Mattei’s

operational philosophy. A way of approaching the market and
customers that makes Mattei an absolute point of reference in
the compressed air sector.
Since 1994, Mattei has been operating with a Quality System
certified by the DNV Institute under UNI EN ISO 9001
regulations.

MATTEI’S COMPRESSORS
Mattei’s rotary vane air compressors are the result of
continuous innovation and advanced design capabilities. The
low rotational speed of the compressor unit found only in vane
technology, the high volumetric efficiency and the complete
absence of roller or thrust bearings, result in energy savings of
over 15% compared to other rotary compressors.

EFFICIENCY 1:1
All Mattei’s compressors have a 1:1
ratio between the electric motor speed
and that of the airend. This means
greater energy efficiency and higher
performances. SAFETY / RELIABILITY

AIR CENTRE SERIES
Rotary Vane Technology

AIR CENTRE

Mattei’s Air Centre series compressors are complete and

efficient machines that are ideal for any type of industrial
application.

DIRECT COUPLING
Mattei has always produced compressors in which the electric
motor, which turns at a speed of only 1,500 rpm, is directly
coupled to the compression unit by means of a flexible joint.
This direct, in-line coupling results in considerable energy
saving as there are no losses due to the presence of pulley
wheels and drive belts.

AUTOMATIC FLOW RATE CONTROL

As well as the classic “ON/OFF OPERATION” mode, all of
the models, from the AC 30 to the AC 90, are fitted with the
special modulating proportional intake valve which allows air
supply at a constant pressure and even offers the possibility
of working without an air storage tank.

DURABLE AND QUIET

AIR CENTRE compressors are epoxy powder coated and
corrosion and scratch resistant. In addition they are lined
internally with a thick layer of high-quality soundproof material
and equipped with a high efficiency cabinet pre-filter. This
filtering device prevents the radiator and main air filter from
premature clogging caused by impurities in the intake air,
thus providing additional cost savings.

TLET
AIR OU
OPERATING PRINCIPLE

Maximum efficiency of the air compression process, excellent reliability and low

COM
running costs; are just some of the key benefits that rotary vane technology can offer.

PRESSION
The vane compressor is a volumetric rotary compressor that consists of a stator cylinder
in which a rotor is mounted off-centre but parallel to its sides. The rotor has slots in which
the vanes are free to slide: centrifugal force keeps them in contact with the sides of the
stator during rotation. The rotary vane compressor, thanks to its simple construction, offers
remarkable advantages, first among them being greater
volume yield because the vanes are in constant contact with
AS PIR
the inner wall of the stator and form a perfectly airtight seal with ATIO N

no leaks along the wall thanks to a continuous film of oil. In this type
of compressor no axial thrust is generated so the side surfaces of the rotor are not subject to
wear and thus no rotating bearings or thrust bearings are needed. The vanes, too, because of
the special way they are made have practically unlimited life. Behind the success of Mattei
compressors there is thus extreme reliability, long life, quiet operation and simplicity of
maintenance. Design is important too: compactness and clean lines, together with harmonious
shapes, give Mattei compressors an image of robustness and ease of use.

SOFT - START
(AC 55÷90 - AC 110÷132 - AC 160÷250)
Motor soft starter allows a reduction of the load
and torque in the power train and electrical current
surge of the motor during start-up.
This reduces the mechanical stress on the motor
and shaft, as well as the electrodynamic stresses
on the attached power cables and electrical
distribution network, extending the lifespan of the
system.

A HIGH EFFICIENCY OIL SEPARATION

The separation of the lubrication oil from the
compressed air takes place in multiple stages.
A first separation occurs in the oil chamber
as the air passes through a labyrinth path,
then it continues at the separator inlet
(before the filter) where the air flow
slows down passing through a series
of directional variations, and finally
through the coalescing filter. Due
to this superior separation system
the oil carry over is extremely low,
leading to improved separator life,
greater protection for the application
and reduced operating costs. 5

DURABLE AND QUIET

The Classic compressors are robust, resistant to corrosion
and are particularly compact and ideal for installation in
small spaces. The vane technology ensures safe and quiet
operation even without a noise reducing outer canopy.

SIMPLE AND ACCESSIBLE MAINTENANCE

The absence of the outer canopy considerably facilitates all
maintenance and service operations.
The compressor requires no special foundations and its base
has suitable lifting points for ease of installation.

SOFT - START
Motor soft starter (ERC 4÷22 kW) allows a reduction of
the load and torque in the power train and electrical

The design and operation of BLADE 4÷11 compressors

ensures the correct operating temperature is quickly and
effectively reached. This is important in order to extend the
operating life by preventing condensation from forming in the
system. Mattei’s design of the BLADE compressor makes
preventive maintenance operations simple and quick. Motor
to compressor transmission is achieved through dual high
efficiency “V” belts, the tension of which is ensured by a sliding
belt tensioner. This feature reduces belt wear to a minimum,
extending its operating life and simplifying maintenance.
Compressor maintenance is further assisted by specific
service kits specifically designed to speed up the process.

OPERATIONAL MODE

“CONTINUOUS” MODE “MODULATION” MODE

The compressor supplies air that falls within a pressure minimum A feature of the Mattei rotary compressors is that the airflow is
and maximum. When the maximum pressure is reached, the adjusted and adapted to the network requests by the hydraulic
compressor is placed “under vacuum” and decompressed control system that is integrated into the intake valve and done
to reduce the absorption of energy, and the intake valve using a servo valve.
closes. When the line pressure lowers to the minimum set, the
compressor is “loaded” and instantly recovers delivery.

“AUTOMATIC” MODE
SOFT - START
This allows the compressor to work continuously with the
additional possibility of automatically stopping in the absence
of required air. Motor soft starter allows a reduction of the load and torque in
the power train and electrical current surge of the motor during
start-up. This reduces the mechanical stress on the motor and
shaft, as well as the electrodynamic stresses on the attached
power cables and electrical distribution network, extending the
lifespan of the system.

BLADE 8-12 i WITH INVERTER

MATTEI INVERTER REGULATION SYSTEM

Blade 8-12 i operates within a range of pre-set maximum and

minimum pressures. When reaching the maximum pressure, at
the minimum rotational speed the shutdown of the intake valve
occurs, the compressor is set “off load” and decompressed to
1.5 bar, to reduce the energy absorption further.
When the line pressure lowers to the minimum pre-set value
it is reset to the “on load” condition and starts delivering air
instantly, adapting the rotational speed to the air demand.

DIRECT COUPLING

The electric motor and the compressor are coupled directly by

means of flexible coupling and turn at only 1500 rpm.
Direct coupling determines a remarkable “energy saving”
because there are no energy losses caused by gears or V belts.

A USER-FRIENDLY CONTROLLER

MaestroXB is a programmable controller which regulates the

operation of the compressor to suit the specific requirements
of the air distribution system. It has different programming
levels and special options for controlling and analysing the
operation and faults.

A HIGH EFFICIENCY OIL SEPARATION

The separation of the oil from air is carried out in several

stages and allows an exceptionally low oil carryover. After the
compression cycle the air-oil mixture reaches the separator
tank, most of the lubricant is collected here due to the change
in air speed and the cyclonic action as it enters the tank. The air
with the remaining oil residue is then filtered in the coalescing
separator.
The complete system ensures that the residual oil content is
less than 3 mg/m3 of air, the over-sized separator element and
the quality of the materials used guarantee longer working
hours.

OIL-WATER SEPARATION

The condensed water inside the compression chamber will contain particles of the oil used
as compressor lubricant/coolant in addition to those airborne contaminants including
hydrocarbons drawn in to the compressor from the atmosphere. To discharge the water
into the drainage, according to the regulations required in the country of installation, the
condensate will first have to be purified. Mattei’s MOS Series separators are used to
this end, because they are easy to install and are manufactured with recyclable materials.
These accessories guarantee excellent performances and maximum reliability, thanks to
the higher quality and long lifespan of the new cartridge filters. Separators are available
with or without pre-separator.

CONDENSATE TREATMENT

Air contains water in the form of vapour, which varies depending on the climate and
seasons. It’s higher in the summer and lower during the colder months. The condensate
caused as the compressed air cools compromises its quality. Indeed, as well as being a
potentially aggressive agent, because of its PH value, the condensate contains elements,
such as compressor residual oils, dirt and other air pollutants. Therefore it is necessary
to use cyclone separators, into which water drops are swept away as a result of the
turbulence and discharged through special drains.
Mattei’s electronic condensate drains have a timer control, are adjustable and
equipped with a tap. Thanks to their compact size, they can be installed in whatever
position is best suited for the customer’s system and require only minimum maintenance.
The 200 model also enables level control, avoids air leaks when the compressor is
working and includes the malfunction indicator, to ensure long lifespan.

Two different types of contaminants may seriously affect the
quality of compressed air:

2) plant contaminants
LARGE DIAMETER
Regarding atmospheric pollution, a cubic metre of urban CONNECTIONS
compressed air at 7 bar can contain one thousand million

Contamination of the air system occurs because compressors ALUMINIUM

HIGH-QUALITY COMPRESSED DRY AIR: alumina-based technology. Alumina is an absorbent material that
guarantees consistently high performance in delivering compressed air purity.

ULTRA-COMPACT AND LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN: ease of installation and maintenance.

HIGHLY EFFICIENT PLC CONTROL SYSTEM: the removal of moisture and contaminant particles is rigorously
controlled.

COMPRESSOR SYNCHRONISATION: starts and stops the dryer with a signal from the compressor, eliminating
purge loss when drying is not required.

ENERGY SAVING: advanced design limits regeneration purge air usage to around 15%.

UNINTERRUPTED FLOW OF COMPRESSED AIR WITH A CONSISTENT AIR PRESSURE:

at an optimum dew point set as standard to -40°C (-40°F).

REDUCED NOISE LEVELS: the new desiccant dryers are fitted with
unique exhaust air silencers.

ALUMINA - BASED
TECHNOLOGY

PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION
Heatless desiccant dryers are the most common due to their simplicity and
hence low cost. A heatless twin tower dryer (see figure opposite) operates
by removing moisture through adsorption onto a granular desiccant bed
A from the feed air (typically at 100 psig) as it flows up through a packed bed
of desiccant, column A. Column B (having been previously used in drying
B the inlet air) is at atmospheric pressure and dry purge air from the outlet
of column A is fed through a purge valve, expanded to near atmospheric
pressure, and flowed in contra flow direction down through column B to
effect the regeneration of its granular desiccant bed. When the desiccant
in column A becomes saturated with water vapor (usually determined by a
simple timer controller) the feed air is switched back to column B, after it
has been pressurised, and the cycle continues.

A centrifugal blower and high efficiency heater

eliminates the use of valuable compressed air to be
used for desiccant regeneration.

The completely automatic drying system uses

blower to pull ambient air and pass it through the
heater. This hot air stream flows opposite to drying
flow direction. Hot air above 200 °C regenerates
the moisture inside desiccant bed and strips it
completely of all moisture.
The advanced control system monitors the dew
point and adjusts the regeneration accordingly
thereby providing valuable energy savings.

OPERATING PRINCIPLE:
1 The oily condensate (under pressure) enters the expansion chamber (only for
1 model with pre-separator).
2 Here the pressure is exhausted in the pre-separation container, without any
2 turbulence.
3 Any solid particle is collected into a removable container.

4 Inside the pre-separation container the oil returns to the surface due to
5
gravitational separation. Then the oil flows into the oil container.
3 5 The treated condensate reaches the filtering phase. The pre-filter retains
much of the remaining oil as the condensate passes through it. It also

6 removes any residual oil inside the filtering chamber.

6 The remaining oil particles are efficiently filtered by the main filter element.

4
The final result is clean water, ready for disposal directly in to the sewerage
system. Replacing the filter is simple, quick and clean, due to the new
technology of the element.
