Introduction

In a highly competitive and data-centric world where information and data is available in
abundance, it is vital for a decision maker to focus on statistical data analysis for effective
decision making. Broadening statistical knowledge enables one to engage in
decisionmaking processes with authority, accuracy and integrity. The most successful
managers are those who can understand and use information effectively.
Advances in statistical tools and techniques coupled with application software can
considerably aid in intelligent decision making in various fields of management viz. market
research, financial modelling, operations management, HR analytics and many more. This
course aims at developing at individual level, understanding of data, concepts of
appropriate quantitative techniques, data visualizing, analytical and interpreting abilities.

Learning Outcomes/Course Objectives

(AACSB Sub Goal 4.1: Critically examine organizational problems and issues, using
various analytical tools and frameworks)

This course will enable students –

• to understand data and visualize in a knowledge perspective
• to conceptualize different statistical methodologies and techniques
• to analyze data using appropriate statistical techniques
• to use appropriate software for better understanding of data analysis
• to interpret results of data analysis for effective business decision making
• to prepare students interested to learn analytics related courses

Pedagogy – Learning Process

The pedagogy will be a mix of interactive lectures, case let discussions and demonstrations
of analysis of real life data. Discussions will be based on understanding the concepts and
applications of the methodologies to real-life situations. Students are expected to come
prepared for each session. They should go through the relevant reading materials from the
text book before coming to the class. Homework will be assigned at regular intervals.
However, homework may not be graded, and it will be student’s responsibility to
understand and complete the homework.

Evaluation Components/Assessment of Student Learning

Evaluation
Intended subject learning outcome (4.1) to be
Component Percentage
assessed
/Assessment Tool
Quiz 20% These components evaluate students’ ability to
Mid-term Exam 25% understand various concepts of the subject and to
apply appropriate statistical techniques in business
applications through data analysis. Students are
End term Exam 35% also evaluated in terms of their ability to interpret
various statistical outputs generated through
statistical software.
Project will be carried out in groups. Each group
will identify a phenomenon worth of analysing
quantitatively and study it with a real data set
(project with primary data will attract more
credits). Students will be expected to come up with
a decision-making problem and give it a solution
(limited to the topics) based on quantitative
Project 20% methods.
The group project facilitates students to
demonstrate their ability in a real-life situation in
terms of identifying problem, collecting appropriate
data, analyzing data with statistical techniques and
software and interpreting different results from a
managerial perspective.

Additional Instructions (if any)

• Quizzes would primarily contain questions of objective type; questions may require
minor computing.
• The End-term examinations will be for 120/150 minutes. Use of Laptop is allowed
in the examination hall.

Group project:
A project proposal (should not exceed three pages) should be submitted for approval and
the participants are encouraged to discuss with the instructor before submitting the
proposal. The deadline for submission of the proposal as well as the final project will be
intimated later. The length of the final project report should be at least three but no more
than ten pages (A4 size, font size 12). Following information are mandatory for the final
submission:
• A title of the project with introduction and motivation for the problem
• Discussing sampling methodology used for the collection of data
• Statistical methodology used for the data analysis
• Conclusion
• Data (source), Tables and graphs should be provided in the “Appendix”.

Soft copies of the project and data set (MS Word or PDF document) should be submitted
through Moodle. The report must include the names of all the group members along with
the group number. Each member of the group should contribute and to ensure the
contribution, each group should write a brief report on the individual contribution (in the
data collection or analysis or problem selection, graphs and tables etc.).
