Quick Reference Guide to the IPA
For the most part, the IPA is the same as you would see in any other language. Here is a quick
explanation of the symbols and sounds that are more uniquely Russian:
[ɑ] = an unaccented version of the [a] vowel. It is NOT a dark “ah” as in the German word
“Vater.” This symbol signifies that there is some degree of [ə] in the vowel. The amount is
somewhat flexible according to the length of note, tessitura, position in the word, etc. The safest
pronunciation is simply [a] without stressing that syllable.
[ʲ] = a soft or palatal consonant indicator (here it is attached to a letter for clarity’s sake [tʲ]). It
signifies the softness of the consonant before it. Soft consonants are made by saying them with
the tongue in the palatal position, as it is when saying the vowel [i]. Some people think of it as a
very small [j] glide between the consonant and vowel. I prefer to think of it as saying the
consonants with a slight lateral lisp.
[ɨ] = a hard indicating vowel formed like [i] but with the tongue relaxed and not fully in the
palatal position (the sides of the tongue should not touch the top molars). For labial consonants
[m, p, b, f, v], it is possible to think of a slight [w] glide between the consonant and vowel (or
simply saying the consonant with the tongue in place for an [u] vowel). Note however, that after
the consonant has been hardened, the tongue is allowed – but not required – to return to the
palatal position, making the held length of the note sung on [i]. The singer can make this choice
for resonance or tessitura purposes.
[ɛ] vs. [e] = this difference shouldn’t be over done. There is technically a “rule” to determine
this, but it is easily overruled by tessitura, length of note, and basically any reason the singer
desires. Regardless of what IPA I’ve written for these vowels, I recommend doing what is
comfortable – in an informed way of course.
[L] vs. [lʲ] = the infamous hard Russian [L]. I use the upper case as an extra reminder to NOT
make this consonant soft or Americanized. This consonant can be formed a few different ways.
In one option, the very tip of the tongue should be pointed straight up, touching the alveolar
ridge. In another, the tip of the tongue is sticking slightly out of the mouth with the tongue
touching only the bottom of the top-front teeth. In contrast, in an American “L” is formed with
the tip of the tongue touching the back of the teeth. *say with Russian accent* Learn to love it.
The Russian soft [lʲ] should be formed similarly to the beginning of the Italian “gli” or [ʎ] with
the tip of the tongue flat against hard palate just behind the alveolar ridge. However, after the
consonant, the tongue should not roll back as in the Italian [ʎ], but instead flip down into the
following vowel.
[ʃ] = indicates the always-hard “sh”. Shay thish conshonant azh you imagine Sean Connery
would shay it. Thish rule alsho pertainsh to the conshonant [ʒ], which izh alsho alwayzh hard.
[x] vs. [ç] = the [x] (always hard) in Russian is a little different than the ach-Laut in German.
There should be absolutely no vibration of the soft palate or throat, it’s just air (meaning the
back-center of the tongue should be a bit more lifted, almost – but not quite – touching the back

of the hard palate). For me, the tongue position is the same as I use to imitate Darth Vader’s
breathing. The [ç] (always soft) is identical to the German ich-Laut. NOTE: in German, these
consonant sounds are determined by what comes before them, but in Russian, the sounds are
determined by what comes AFTER. This means that even though it may be a similar sound, it
will probably feel very different than it would in German.
[t͡ʃ] vs. [tʃ] = the first symbol with the bracket is always soft and should be pronounced the same
as in the words “Cheetos” or “Chewbacca.” The second symbol without the bracket should be
pronounced with a hard Sean Connery style [ʃ] at the end, as in the Russian word «лучше»
[ˈLutʃɛ]
[ɪ] = In certain Russian words, the unaccented «я» is so short and minimized that it merits a
different symbol than the normal unaccented [ɑ]. For these few cases, I've used the symbol [ɪ] to
represent this extra short, extra unaccented syllable. It should be pronounced very similarly to
the vowel in the English word, “with.”
[ ‿ ] = a connection of cause and effect between words usually changing unvoiced ending
consonants into voiced consonants. A note about these: I have indicated possibilities in the IPA,
but this is a rather nuanced choice to be made when singing in Russian. In some instances it is
required to voice these consonants, in most instances either choice could be correct, and
sometimes it must be unvoiced. Listen to Russian singers and judge for yourself. Then go ask a
native speaker if it sounds stupid – you’ll probably get a different answer from every person you
ask.
A note on prepositions: If they are only one syllable (or one consonant for that matter), they are
unaccented and attached to the word after them. For IPA purposes, they are essentially a part of
the word they are attached to. This is indicated through a ligature [ ‿ ] For example:
в силах = [f‿ ˈsʲiLɑx]
за всю = [zɑ‿ ˈfsʲu]
There are a few prepositions that are more than one syllable. I have kept these separate from
their nouns and indicated the correct accent. However, the accents on these prepositions are
extremely weak. So much so, that Tchaikovsky sometimes ignores them altogether in his setting
of the text. For this reason, their accent is secondary and written underneath in the IPA. For
example:

-кий endings – in modern pronunciation, these endings are pronounced as they are spelled [kʲij].
However, in classical stage Russian they are traditionally pronounced the old-fashioned way
[kəj]. Both possibilities are correct, and it is common to hear Russian singers pronounce these
endings both ways. There are some instances in old poetry where the [kəj] pronunciation is
necessary to maintain the rhyme scheme, but there are no such instances in this opera. I have
chosen to use the modern pronunciation in my IPA transcription, but the choice remains up to the
performer.

A note on assimilated softness: suffice it to say that some consonants aquire the softness of
consonants that follow them, and others don’t. The trend in modern Russian is to NOT assimilate
softness in most cases, however there are some cases where it is. I have chosen not to include
these in my IPA transcription, mostly because what feels most natural and efficient in the
pronunciation will sound the best. In most cases, the actual difference in sound between
assimilation and non-assimilation is insignificant. Simply pronounce the final consonant
correctly, and the other consonants will naturally fall into place. In cases where it affects [ɛ] vs.
[e], I’ve reflected it in those vowels.
One final note: during the Soviet Union, alternate words were added to the score, in most cases,
to secularize the language and story of the opera. However, in some cases the words were
changed for other reasons (modernization of language, accenting of correct syllable,
dramaturgical consistency, etc.). In modern productions, it is not unusual to hear a combination
of both versions of the libretto. Therefore, I have taken the liberty of translating and IPAing both
versions of the text. They are wrapped in brackets as follows:
