1.0 Purpose:
This Procedure is intended to provide guidance and instructions for carrying out the water jet
pump start-up operation and STOP sequences.

2.0 Responsibility:
1. All the personnel involved in carrying out /supervising the above activities are required to
ensure implementation of this procedure.
2. In the event of any changes required in the procedure such changes may be requested
with Site in charge, who would take appropriate action with approval from respective
departmental heads.

3.0 SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL MEASURES/ CHECKS:

1. Ensure coupling guard of all the pumps is properly fixed.
2. Ensure proper earthing connections of motor.
3. Work area should be clean & no oil, grease splitting should be there.
4. Safety signs should be marked wherever required.
5. Readiness of firefighting equipment’s.
6. Ensure no oil leak at water jet pump bearings area. If oil leak is there, collect in suitable
container and transfer to the empty barrels and keep that barrel at waste oil storage yard.
7. If any fire / smoke due to oil leak, put off the fire and stop the equipment and start the
standby one.

4.0 CHECKLIST:
1. Check pump suction isolation valve and keep it in full open condition.
2. Check pump discharge line isolation valve and keep it in full close condition.
3. Check pump discharge header isolation valve (which ejector need to be taken in line) and
keep it in full open condition.
4. Check pump bearing house oil level, if it low top up with appropriate oil up to normal
level.
5. Check both ejectors airline (from condenser) isolation valves and keep close condition.
6. Check Jet pump tank drain line isolation valve and keep it full close condition.

7. Check Jet pump tank level and maintain 750 MM, if low open the initial filling line
isolation valve and increase tank level up to 750 MM.
8. Check coupling guard provided or not, it should be must provide.
9. Ensure all instruments are lined up (i.e., pump discharge pressure gauge and header
pressure gauges root are valve are open).
10. Ensure work permit closed or not, it should be must close before start the pump.
11. Take clearance from all (mechanical, instrument & electrical) departments.
12. Check the breaker is in service and remote/local switch in remote position.
13. After pre check is complete start the Motor.

5.0 START PERMISSIVES:

1. Switchgear available.
2. Motor power supply should be normalized.
3. EPB not operated.

START Water Jet Pump:

Post Start check list:
1. Ensure no abnormal sound from motor and pump.
2. Check the bearing temperature (< 85 ͦC) and bearing vibration (< 8 mm/sec) of pump and
Motor.
3. Check for any oil leakage from bearing house DE & NDE side.
4. Check that no water leakage present in water line.
5. Check the discharge pressure of jet pump.
6. Before STG synchronization, water storage tank re-circulation not required.
7. After STG synchronization, required to storage tank water re-circulation through opening
of storage tank initial make-up line isolation valve partially and make sure did not over
flow the re-circulation line funnel.
8. According to storage tank water parameters should be given blowdown.
9. Make line-up standby pump (check list as well as pump#1), put in AUTO mode.

2. Stop the pump from DCS / LOCAL.

8.0 Isolation procedures for water jet pump for long Shutdown:
1. Make electrical isolation for Jet pump motor & disable it from DCS, put switch in local
& switch off DC power supply & rack out the breaker.
2. Close the suction line isolation valve.
3. Close the discharge line isolation valve.
4. Close discharge header appropriate isolation valve.
5. Open the pump casing drain dummy plug and drain the water.
6. Issue PTW for isolation and normalization.

9.0 When one Jet is running then isolation procedure for 2nd Jet pump:
Electrical-
1. Electrical- stopped & disable from DCS
2. Selector switch OFF
3. Feeder rack-out
4. DC supply OFF
5. Tagged with PTW NO.

Operation-
1. Close the suction line isolation valve.
2. Close the discharge line isolation valve.
3. Close discharge header appropriate isolation valve.
4. Open the pump casing drain dummy plug and drain the water.
5. Issue PTW for isolation and normalization.

10.0 Water Jet Pump Changeover:

1. Ensure the any permit, men and material are removed from stand-by water jet pump
area
2. Confirm the Permissive Motor power normalization and healthy indication in DCS).
3. Check pump suction isolation valve and keep it in full open condition.
4. Check pump discharge line isolation valve and keep it in full close condition.

5. Check pump bearing house oil level, if it low top up with appropriate oil up to normal
level.
6. Check coupling guard provided or not, it should be must provide.

pressure gauges root are valve are open).
8. Ensure work permit closed or not, it should be must close before start the pump.
9. Take clearance from all (mechanical, instrument & electrical) departments.
10. Check the breaker is in service and remote/local switch in remote position.
11. After pre check is complete start the stand-by jet pump from DCS/Local.
12. Open discharge valve gradually up to full and check pump discharge pressure.
13. Observe vibration and Bearing Temp. It must be normal.
14. Close the discharge valve of previously running pump and STOP.
15. Keep the pump on standby or isolate for maintenance.

Emergency operation Of Water Jet Pump:

Cause:
1. Motor protection relay operates or disturbance in the supply module (Fuse blown off).
2. 380 V main supply failure.

Effect:
1. Condenser vacuum will fall.
2. Turbine exhaust temperature will rise.
3. Condenser pressure will go positive side and chances to fail rupture disk.
4. Unit has to be tripped unless the jet pump can be restored immediately
5. If one jet pump has tripped see that the stand by jet pump has started on auto or not,
if not start it manual immediately.
6. Reduce the unit load if stand by jet pump is not available to control the vacuum and
rectify the problem in the jet pump which has tripped.
