Instructions:
1. Attempt all questions.
2. The test duration is 1 hour and 10 minutes.
3. Switch off your mobile.
4. Demonstrate the steps while answering the questions.
5. Any impression of following unfair means will be strictly dealt with.
6. You may use a scientific calculator.
1. Marks for each question are within “[]” bracket.
1. Let the sample space be S. S = {k1, k2, k3, k4, k5} where P (k1) = 0.05, P (k2) = 0.2 = P (k3),
P (k4) = k, and P (k5 ) = 0.01. Find the value of P (k4). [5]

2. Let S be the sample space, and let there be three events A, B, and C. For each of the
following events draw a Venn diagram representation as well as a set expression. [10]
a. Among the three events, only A occurs.
b. A or C occurs, but not B.
c. At most two of the events A, B, or C occur.

3. Let three events, A, B, and C be in a sample space S. Further, let

1 2 5
𝐴 ∪ 𝐵 ∪ 𝐶 = 𝑆; 𝑃(𝐴) = 2 ; 𝑃(𝐵) = 3 ; 𝑃(𝐴 ∪ 𝐵) = 6 [10]
a. 𝑃(𝐴 ∩ 𝐵)
b. 𝑃(𝐶 − (𝐴 ∪ 𝐵))
c. 𝐼𝑓 𝑃(𝐶 ∩ (𝐴 ∪ 𝐵)) = 5/12, find 𝑃(𝐶)

4. Suppose there are 30 people are in a room. What is the probability that there is at least
one shared birthday among these 30 people? [5]

5. Table below shows a random sample of 100 hikers and their areas of preferred hiking.
[10]
Sex Coastline Lakes and streams Mountain peaks Total
Female 18 16 a 45
Male b c 14 55
Total d 41 e f
a. Complete the above table (find a through f).
b. Let F = being female; P = prefer mountain peaks. Find the below probabilities:
a. 𝑃(𝐹);
b. 𝑃(𝑃);
c. 𝑃(𝑃 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐹);
d. 𝑃(𝑃 𝑜𝑟 𝐹)

6. In a certain state's lottery, 48 balls numbered 1 through 48 are placed in a machine and
six of them are drawn at random. If the six numbers drawn match the numbers that a
player had chosen, the player wins $1,000,000. In this lottery, the order the numbers
are drawn in doesn't matter. Compute the probability that you win the million-dollar
prize if you purchase a single lottery ticket. [10]

7. As you know, Covid-19 tests are common nowadays, but some results of tests are not
true. Let’s assume; a diagnostic test has 99% accuracy and 60% of all people have
Covid-19. If a patient tests positive, what is the probability that they actually have the
disease? [10]

8. Three identical boxes contain red and white balls. The first box contains 3 red and 2
white balls, the second box has 4 red and 5 white balls, and the third box has 2 red and
4 white balls. A box is chosen very randomly and a ball is drawn from it. If the ball that
is drawn out is red, what will be the probability that the second box is chosen? [10]
