TBI ANTICIPATING PROBLEMS Listed below are some of the questions you might need to ask yourself before you teach an item of language. With a partner, decide if these are questions about MEANING, PRONUNCIATION, FORM, or ‘APPROPRIACY. 1) How do you say the structure in natural connected speech? 2) What's the singular and plural? 3) Where's the sentence stress? 4) How do you make the question (and the answer)? 5) What concept is expressed by this piece of language? 6) sit formal, informal, or neutral? 7) How do you make the structure? 8) Does your voice go up or down when you say it? 9) Isthis usually written or spoken, or both? 10) Where's the word stress? 11) _Isitregular or irregular? 12) Are there any contractions? 13) Whats the reason for somebody saying or writing this? 14) Which words come before and after it? 15) Does the way you say it affect the meaning? TBI 16) How do you spell it? 17) Will the students be able to say the individual sounds? 18) In what context would you use the language? Therefore... By analysing the language yourself first from the students’ point of view before you go in and teach it, you will be able to anticipate at least some of the problems your students might have. This approach will help you plan more clearly and deal with errors more effectively.
