MAIN AIMS

LANGUAGE

To help (or enable) the Ss to understand and use either


a) a new structure e.g.
have got
used to
will for spontaneous decisions.

or b) new vocabulary e.g.


the following lexical set for illness or interests: (List the target vocabulary).

or c) a new function e.g.


Greeting, complaining, or apologizing. (Give examples of the target language).

SKILLS

To develop the skill of


• reading for (overall meaning/specific information/detail)

• listening for (overall meaning/specific information/detail)

• spoken fluency

• writing (a formal letter, an e-mail, etc)

To enable consolidation of … by means of (revision practice through) a test, role-play, etc.

SUBSIDIARY AIMS

One of the above Main Aims could have any of the others as subsidiary aims, e.g.

Main Aims: to develop the skill of reading for detail; to develop students’ oral fluency;

Subsidiary aim: to enable the Ss to understand a lexical set.

Depending on the lesson, there might be more than one main or subsidiary aim. There might also be no
subsidiary aims, so don’t feel a need to invent any for the sake of it!

STAGES

The procedure for each main aim consists of a set of stages and each has an aim that links up with the
main aim e.g.
Main Aim: to develop students’ ability to read for gist & to read for detail

Stage: set the scene Aim: to arouse interest


Stage: check the vocab in the text Aim: to enable students to understand the text and to do
the tasks
Stage: reading for gist Aim: to develop the skill of reading for overall meaning
Stage: reading for detail Aim: to develop the skill of reading for detail
Stage: personalisation. Aim: to develop spoken fluency
Students talk about how
the text relates to them
or do a role-play based on it
