Creation of “Sectors” as units

Objectives
and the Vision
Chandigarh was one of the first
cities to be planned in post-
independence India. Conceived in
order to provide a new center of
governance for Punjab and Haryana,
it was also meant to house refugees Attributed to Le
and be a bastion of modern India. Corbusier, the city is
known for its landscaping,
geometric, proportionate building
designs, attention to scale and
detail. and its beautiful but
functional architecture.
The Human Scale:

Head: The Capitol

Heart: The City Centre

Stomach: The Commercial Area

Arms: University, Industry

zone
Lungs: Leisure valley, Open
spaces
Arteries: Road Networks
The Iron Grid and its
Functional Zones
The Grid-Iron Plan

Main streets intersect at right angles

City didvided into organized, numbered blocks

Designated spaces for different purposes

Can accommodate future expansion with

more ease
The Sectors of Chandigarh
City thus divided into units called “Sectors”

Chandigarh currently has 56 sectors

Each Sector is a self-sufficient unit in terms

of facilities, and is further divided into four
blocks (A, B, C & D)

Easily navigable and convenient

Existing Land Use
Residential areas Circulation

As per the
CIAM

Commercial, institutional Green and recreational

and administrative spaces spaces

Integrated into the landscape with wide, tree-lined

avenues

Organized and easily-navigable

The V7 System
V1: Fast roads connecting to other towns
V2: Arterial roads
V3: Fast vehicular roads
V4: Free-flowing shopping streets
V5: Sector-circulation roads
V6: Access roads to houses
V7: Footpaths and cycle tracks

Development
and the Chandigarh Master Plan
2031
The Three Phases
Phase I: Dealt with Sectors 1 to 30, covering around 9398.83
acres (33.37% of land)

Phase II: Dealt with Sectors 31 to 47, covering around

5158.76 acres (18.31% of land)

Phase III: Deals with Sectors 48 to 56, covering around

1870.54 acres (6.64% of land)
In order to accommodate the
projected increase in population by Master Plan
the year 2031, the Chandigarh
Master Plan 2031 has been
conceived. The projection is also
close to the holding capacity of
Chandigarh, which calls for improved Redensification is one
planning in existing spaces. method this plan could adopt
in order to better existing
spaces, along with the planned
development of 3,082 acres from the

2031 11,742 acres present in the

periphery.

Shortcomings
What Corbie couldn’t account for
Poor integration of spatial
segregation, high social
stratification

Commute and convenience made

difficult for lower-income
residents

Has not been able to evolve

organically to include newer
developments in design
Unnecessarily large scale

Highly carbon-intensive, not a

design climate-consciousness
can be easily integrated into

Hyper standardized and

impersonal facades, often
giving a severe, industrial look
Controversial man. Much Scandal.

Many critics condemn his public

housing projects for isolating poor
communities to the fringes of the
city, seeing in his urbanistic vision
the model for a fascist state.

Moral of the story- do not corb.

That’s about it :)
