THE INS & OUTS OF DOORS

15
2
Doors have existed right through human existence. They would have first been crude covers for caves,
protecting our earliest ancestors against the weather and wild animals. But, soon, doors became an 3

integral part of human habitations. Various cultures attributed spiritual properties to them, so much 14
4
so that an entire class of gods, called liminal deities, emerged. The Chinese called their door gods
Menshen, the Romans had Janus, the god of the gates. The Greeks believed that the gates of hell
5
were guarded by Cerberus, a fierce three headed dog. And, as per Christian belief, St Peter mans
the gates of heaven, allowing only the righteous to pass. In India, a newly wed bride topples a pot of 13 6

rice placed on the threshold of her husband’s family’s door, symbolising her entry into married life.
The Evolution of Doors
7
The earliest doors still in existence are made of stone or metal, with stubs on their tops and bottoms
8
that fitted into sockets on the frames. However, by as early as 3000BC wooden doors became
popular - King Solomon’s temple in Jerusalem had olive wood doors overlaid with gold. As time went
by, advances in material science brought out new possibilities. Copper and bronze doors were widely
used for major buildings in medieval Europe. Folding and sliding doors were found preserved in the 12 9

ruins of Pompeii. By the 20th century plastics and fibreglass made their way into door construction.

Engineered Doors: The Giant Leap in Door Technology
The most significant advancement in door design and manufacture has been the engineered door. A
single slab of hardwood, while still considered a status symbol by some, has significant drawbacks.
It is prone to warping, twisting and bowing, and air pockets in the wood can compromise its sonic
and thermal properties. Engineered doors solve these issues at a fraction the cost of a solid wood Parts of a Door

MAIN DOORS
Main doors are special. They not only make a statement, but need to
be much more substantial and secure than interior doors.

Veneered Main Doors

Our veneered main doors have been re-engineered with a 45mm
thickness. This makes them substantial and highly stable. The increased
thickness of the main doors also allows for raised or deeper grooves
of up to 5mm.

Teak Main Doors

Teak offers maximum stability and durability. FeroDoor teak main
doors are built for a lifetime, using kiln-dried and machine-finished
solid teak slabs.
