Comments:
• Amanda Schoedel ( CLASSROOM): I thoroughly enjoyed being Elham’s second grade teacher this year. These last few
months, he has become incredibly self-motivated and is a strong student who participates often in class meetings and
discussions. He is well-liked by his classmates and has a great sense of humor. Elham is an incredibly inquisitive learner
who likes to share his thoughts with his friends. At times, this inquisitiveness and desire to share distracts him from the
task at hand. He is learning to work hard and stay focused on his work. Elham is definitely ready to move on to third grade
and rise to challenges presented to him there. I know he will thrive and continue to do great things! Good work, Elham!
• Maggie Bielicke ( ESOL): Elham is such a pleasure to have in class. It was great being able to work with him this year.
He is so responsible, respectful, and always tries his best! He is helpful to others and gets along well with peers. He is
still working on staying focused during whole group instruction, as well as when he is working independently. We will
continue to work on this next year. Have a great summer, Elham! I will miss you next year!
• Jessica Grooms ( PHYSICAL EDUCATION): Elham brings a smile and positive attitude to PE. He is very kind to his
classmates and teachers. Elham is continuing to work on staying focused during instruction and making
responsible choices during activities.

Comments: The second half of our year began with a look at the art of Claude Monet. We made a sponge painting and added
oil pastel water lilies followed by a clay water lily. A tempera painting followed in which we focused on painting
control, creative detail, abstract art, geometric and free form shape, and overlapping to create the illusion of space.
We then did a gadget print project completed with "slick sticks". Our final project revisited the concept of overlap
as students drew and colored a closeup of a garden of flowers.
Overall Comments

Comments: Elham has made progress these last few months in second grade. Elham receives EL instruction. This means that
he is receiving English language support that is aligned with the curriculum from Ms. Bielicke and Mrs. Antrobus.
Elham has been working so hard but is still reading below reading level. However, I am so proud of him because
he has made so much growth this year with his reading ability. I encourage him to continue reading over the
summer to ensure he continues to grow. Reading aloud to an adult is a great way for him to continue to use his
reading skills. Elham’s writing has continued to improve with the help of his EL teachers. He is doing a great job of
adding details and more vivid language to his writing pieces. Elham’s math skills have improved greatly this year
as well. He has begun participating more in small groups and with partners. He works hard to complete our math
assignments. I encourage him to continue to practice math facts over the summer to build his confidence. Adding
and subtracting with regrouping is challenging for Elham and reviewing over the summer will help him to be
prepared for third grade. I am very proud of the growth that Elham has made this year!

Comments: Progress for EL students is determined based on 5 domains: Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing and
Academic Language. Overall, Elham is performing as an Emerging English learner with a composite proficiency
score of
2.4/6.0. This year, we focused on building academic language necessary to be successful in the classroom.
Additional documentation regarding your child's English proficiency and their placement within the EL program for
next school year will be shared with you very soon. This semester, Elham mastered how to write a simple sentence
using parts of speech. He is improving more everyday in his writing, but still needs additional support. Elham has
also learned about all of the digraphs in phonics and has been doing a wonderful job with that. He is still working on
his reading skills. Elham is now noticing more words he already knows as he reads, but is still working on sounding
out words as he reads. Elham, I have really enjoyed working with you this year! I am so proud of all of your hard
work and how far you have come since the beginning of the year! Have a great summer. I will miss you next year!
