Football familiarization:
Sideline Soccer
Teams line up on the sidelines of the rectangle. Three or four active players from each team are called
from the end of the team line. These players remain active until a point is scored; then they rotate to the
other end of the line. The object is to kick the ball between cones (goals) that define the scoring area. The
active players on each team compete against each other, aided by their teammates on the sidelines.
To start play, the ball can be given to one team or dropped between two opposing players at the center of
the field. To score, the ball must be kicked last by an active player and must go through the goal at or below
shoulder height. A goal counts one point. Sideline players can pass to other sideline players or an active
teammate, but a sideline kick cannot score a goal.
Regular soccer rules generally prevail, with special attention to the restrictions of no pushing, holding,

tripping, or other rough play. Rough play is a foul and causes a point to be awarded to the other team.
For an out-of-bounds ball, the team on the side of the field where the ball went out-of-bounds is awarded
a free kick near that spot. No score can result from a free kick. Violation of the touch rule also results in a
free kick.
Rotate in a new set of players after 30 to 45 seconds. More active players can be added when the class is
large. A number of passes to sideline players can be mandated before a shot on goal can be taken. After
some expertise is acquired, the cones should be moved in to narrow the goal area. If the ball goes over the
end line but not through the goal area, the ball is put into play by a defender with a kick.
