Lesson 1

Making magnesium chloride


Objective
To make crystals of a salt, magnesium chloride, from a metal and an acid.
You will need
25 cm3 measuring cylinder
100 cm3 beaker
250 cm3 beaker
Stirring rod
Filter paper and funnel
Evaporating basin
Clamp stand and clamp
Bunsen burner, tripod and gauze
Magnesium ribbon
25 cm3 hydrochloric acid (1 mol/dm3)
Tap water
Safety
Wear eye protection.
Do not allow the salt solution to boil dry.
Procedure
