ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING IN TAMILNADU

ABSTRACT:

English is an international language which is used officially around the


world.English can help connecting society with the world in various aspects. Anybody
who wants the world should learn English. This presentation explores the current
landscape of English language teaching in tamilnadu, highlighting key challenges and
proposing a holistic approach for improvement. This presentation also discusses
innovative methodologies,technology integration,and teacher training programs to
elevate the quality of English education in the state. By addressing these aspects,the aim
is to contribute the advancement of ELT practices,fostering effective languages
acquisition and communication skills among students in tamilnadu.

INTRODUCTION:

In this global era,English has successfully placed its position as a language in


multicultural and communication,language in international business
communication,and as a language in the international language of research. (
Rintaningrum,2016) The most popular used language in the world in various
forms.English is estimated spoken by 400 million people as the mother tongue and an
additional 2 billion as a second or foreign language. (Demont-Heinrich,2007). Releated
to that,now there will be more developments happening in this country.

English language teaching in tamilnadu has witnessed siginificant evolution over


the years,reflecting the states commitment to providing quality education and preparing
students for a globalized world.Experiencing those days where people would laugh at
other for the broken English; the grammar and pronunciation are the toughest parts of
the language.People with English as a second language always stumble upon difficulties;
the determination of learning a new language don’t decrease easily as the motivation is
still surrounding one’s mind.Nowadays,English has become an international
communication;even teaching and learning of the language has already spread
throughout the world. English is known as one of the most common use language and
has been offering classes everywhere for years especially around Asia. The world
common language as now become the number one language uses in every fields of
career that is being offer everywhere.
In contemporary times ,ELT in Tamilnadu employs a diverse range of
methodologies,incorporating both traditional and modern approaches.While the
traditional methods emphasize grammar and rote learning. ELT faces challenges such
as resource constraints, varying proficiency levels among students and the need for
continuous teacher training. An important aspect of ELT in tamilnadu is its
commitment to inclusive education. The students in india can be categorized in to two
;the one is having the regional language as medium of study from the primary level and
the other is having English as the medium of the study. When we learn our first
language,our brain ,mind tunes in to the way of particular works and we learn to pay
attention to particular cues to meaning that the new language offers and that differ
from those of our first language

In teaching learning process,two things play vital role; one is the delivering
capacity of the teacher and the other one is receiving capacity of the students. Without
the two aspects,the teaching-learning process will not be a successful one.Teaching-
learning process is just like making sound by clapping. Without two hands we can’t
clap. Like that without a right teacher and the students,the teaching learning process is
meaningless. Teaching should be a worthy of learning a concept deeply and broadly.
Teaching should facilitated the students to face the world which full of political
,social,international as well as personal controversies,without fear. It should give self-
confidence to the students.By the effective teaching,the students should be enable to go
for right choices,judgements and also decisions individually.In the process to teaching-
learning ,the teacher should try to understand the students first.

International students may be sent to America to study,speak,write and read in


English but the chance of encountering difficulties and struggles is high. According to
researches ,learning English in America especially for foreign students is a difficult
decision because one may not be able to become accustomed to the
environment,behavior of difference culture and the acts of other around.English
learners will also encounter reading disability because one cannot read English in a
short time; additionally, international students usually struggle with reading English
eventhough one may have the knowledge of the English language. No matters how many
disadvantage the English language has the world most common language will not be
extince because jobs,education and many other parts of the world use English as
primary. Currently,technology has developed rapidly,so we can access various kinds of
information, including accessing information about learning English. However, most of
as only learn English from books and don’t apply English in everyday life,eventhough,
there are many other learning media to learn English, such as internet, English tutoring
on youtube,and social media too. So, this is one of the factors that makes English
difficult to apply in Indonesia.

English as a second language is a traditional term for the use of the english
language by non-native speakers in an english speaking environment. English as a
second language also refers to specialized approaches to language teaching design for
those primary language is not english (Nordquist, 2019).
Asimple way to define language learning is the process which the3 language
capability develops in an individual,learning strategies can be defined as
actions,steps,plans taken by the learners in processing information they received.
(Hashim,2018).

One of the most important skills that second language learners are required to develop
is writing. A student when learning a language apart from the learning needs and able
to write in that particular language. Therefore it is crucial that the teacher will establish
the main elements of the writing. Second language learners need to understand an
amount of grammar and vocabulary before learning to write but once they have
grasped them,teaching role is to provide the students with all the properties needed in
order to write.

Strategies for learning english as a second language

Before going further to strategies for learning english as a second language here
are the basics english that we must understand is:

a) Tenses

Tenses or word forms are the most important and fundamental elements
for learning english.

b) Listening

Listening is the one of the skills of the english language. Listening to the
words in the english is the quickest way of learning english. Listening is not
easy as people think,particularly when the english language has status as a
foreign language that is different from a second language as well as first
language ( Rintaningrum, 2018).

c) Reading

Reading some texts or sentences in english,writing will make us more


sensitive to the structure of words formed in the language english so as to
get a lot of new vocabulary in english

d) Writing

Writing is one of the basics in learning english, whether it’s from


grammar or vocabulary.

e) Speaking
a. Speaking is the stage where students after mastering
tenses,listening,reading and writing used to speaking the english
language.

Learn english through various media or sources

Because at this time technology is increasingly modern,it allows us to learn


something not only from books,but also other media such as social
media,youtube,online english learning application,etc. By accessing some of these
learning media, our knowledge of the material in english will be wider, learning english

With other people ,in addition to training our confidence,also helps to improve the
quality of learning english as a second language.

Practicing english in daily life

As in the previous citation that the learning process it can be through as


actions,steps,plans,or routines taken by the learners in processing the information they
received.

Conclusion

Based on the explanation above,it can be concluded that learning english as a


second language is very necessary. This is because in this global era,english has
successfully placed it position as a language in multicultural and communication,as a
language in international business communication,and as a languagein the international
language of research. Learning English is needed to face the fast development of the
outside world. Then how to learn english as tge second language can be applied, by
learning english through various or media and parctising it in everyday life,because the
best way to master english is to pracyice listening,speaking,reading,and writing skills in
english.
