3.0 PROCEDURE:
3.1 Sample is collected as per the sampling procedure. Pl refers BGR /PPD
/CIVIL-003 Rev 0.
3.2 Sieve shall be cleaned and arrange in sequence in descending order, i.e.
10 mm, 4.75 mm, 2.36 mm, 1.18 mm, 600 micron, 300 micron 150
micron and pan.
3.3 Take around 1 kg of sample and dry it in oven at a temperature of 100
to 110 deg c.
3.4 Dried sample shall be than weighed and sieved successively on sieve
starting with 10 mm and through 150 micron
3.5 Each sieve shall be shaken at least for 2 minutes until no more trace
passes.
3.6 The shaking shall be done with a varied motion, backwards and
forwards, left to right, circular clockwise and anti-clockwise and frequent
jarring, so that the materials is kept moving over the sieve surface in
frequently changing direction. Material shall not be forced through the
sieve by hand pressure
3.8 Light brushing with a fine camel hair brush may be used on the 150
microns and 75 micron IS Sieve to prevent aggregation of powder and
blinding of apertures.
3.9 Stiff or worn out brushes shall not be used for this purpose and pressure
shall not be applied to the surface of the sieve to force particles through
the mesh

3.10 On completion of sieving, weigh the material retained on each sieve and
calculate the cumulative weight retained on each sieve.
3.11 Obtain cumulative percentage weight retained on each sieve.
4.0 Reporting
4.1 The cumulative percentage by weight of the total sample passing each
sieve, to the nearest whole numbers.
4.2 Fineness modulus: Add values of cumulative percentage retained on
each sieve and divided by 100.
