Hydrology Report

1. Introduction
The Project Stretch Package 201 from Mughalsarai to New Karchana is part of Eastern DFCC Corridor. The
Dedicated Freight corridor Corporation of India Ltd. has intended to contract Package 201 and 202 to The
GMR- SEW JV for the Design and Construction of civil, structures and track works for double line railway
involving formation in embankments/cuttings, ballast on formation, track works, bridges, structures,
buildings, yards, integration with IR existing railway system and testing & commissioning on design-build
lump sum basis. The Package 201 runs parallel to existing IR track with detour at Mirzapur.

The Project corridor lies in Sone basin sub zone 1(d). The rivers flowing in this corridor are tributaries of
Ganga Basin. The basin is bounded by the Himalayas on the north, by the Aravalli on the west, by the
Vindhyas and Chottanagpur plateau on the south and by the Brahmaputra Ridge on the east. The project
corridor lies in the delta of the greater Ganga basin which is one of the largest in the world. There are total
no of 155 bridges, out of which 36 are major bridges and one important bridge. This report contains
hydrology for the Important bridge at Tonse River.

2. Catchment Demarcation and Figure

The Tons is the largest Himalayan tributary of the Yamuna, rises from the north-eastern slope of
Banderpoonch at an elevation of 3900 m and flowing in a valley north-west of Yamuna, meets it below
Kalsi on the south-west fringe of the Mussoorie range. At the confluence of the two rivers, the Tons carry
almost twice the volume of waters as the Yamuna and are considered as the principal source of the river.
Another important tributary, the Giri rise further north-west of the Tons draining areas in Himachal
Pradesh.

The geographical extent of the Tons sub-basin lies between 80° 18' to 83° 20' east longitudes and 23° 58'
to 25° 17' north latitudes of the country. The major river in this sub-basin the Tons is the longest tributary
of the Yamuna river. It flows through Garhwal, the western part of the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand.
The river originates at an elevation of 3,900 m and joins the Yamuna below Kalsi. With its source in the
6,315 m high Banderpoonch Mountain, it is the biggest tributary of the Yamuna. In fact, Tons carries more
water than the Yamuna itself. According to Ministry of Water Resources, Ganga Basin Report, it has a total
catchment area of 16,905 Sq.km and drains mostly in the states of Madhya Pradesh and parts of Uttar
Pradesh. Along with Tons the other major rivers that flow in this sub-basin are the Satna and the Belan
rivers which are shown in Figure 1 (1 in 1000).

3. Design Discharge as per Employer’s Requirement

As per Employer’s Requirement: CI.3.3 A of part 2 Volume – 4, the minimum discharge of Important
Bridge at Tonse River shall be taken as 12,100 Cumec. This discharge is the design discharge for
computation of scour and other parameters as evident from the geo tech report in the tender document
where the discharge is taken as 11000 Cumec and increased by 10% to 12100 Cumec for foundation
design.

4. Data Requirement for Verification of Design Discharge

As mentioned in the clause 4.3.1 and 4.3.2 of Bridge Sub Structure code, where stream flow records
(yearly peak discharges) are available for the desired recurrence interval or where such records exist for
less than the desired recurrence interval, but are of sufficient length to permit reliable statistical analysis,
the design discharge may be computed statistically for the desired recurrence interval.

These data are available with the Central water commission as there is stage and discharge measuring
station near to the proposed bridge site. The data of past flood records are being procured from CWC.

In absence of the past annual discharge data, the discharge has been computed based on Area-Velocity
method considering the recorded HFL.

5. Area Velocity Method

Area – Velocity method is used to calculate the discharge corresponding to HFL taken from the
Toposurvey data. The velocity is calculated using the Manning’s formula as given below:
V = 1/n R2/3 S1/2, and
Q = V. A
Where,
Q = Discharge in cumec

7061434 M/s GIL-SIL JV EDFCC | Revision No. 0 | December 2015 Page | 2

Hydrology Report

V = Velocity in m/sec
R = Hydraulic mean depth in m
S = Flood slope/bed slope
n = Co-efficient of rugosity
A = Area of the cross - section

The value of ‘n’ depends upon soil type and rivers bed characteristics, observed at site and are taken from
Annexure 5.1.1 (b) Bridge & Flood Wing Report No. - RBF-16.

The HFL is taken as 87.034 from the Toposurvey as marked on the pier of the existing structure.

The cross section has been taken from the Toposurvey at the proposed bridge location and at 70 m u/s
and d/s as shown in Figure 2 below:

7. Scour Calculation
7.1 Scour Depth Calculation for Design of Foundation

7.1.1 Design Discharge for Foundation

To provide for an adequate margin of safety against an abnormal flood of magnitude higher than the
design discharge (Q) the foundations, protection works and training works except free board, shall be
designed for a higher flood discharge. The magnitude of this discharge shall be computed by increasing
the design discharge (Q), by the percentage indicated below:

Catchment less than 500 Sq.km 30%

Catchment more than 500 Sq.km and upto 5,000 Sq.km. 30-20%

Catchment more than 5000 Sq.km and upto 25,000 Sq.km. 20-10%

Catchment more than 25,000 Sq.km <10%

In case of Tonse River bridge,
Percentage increase as per the catchment area of 16905 Cumec = 10+(20-10)*(16905-5000)/(25000-5000)
= 16%
Hence Design Discharge for Foundation, Qf = 1.16 * 11623.73
= 13483.53 Cumec

7.1.2 Calculation of Mean depth of Scour

Since due to constriction of waterway, the width is less than Lacey’s regime width for Q or where it is
narrow and deep as in the case of incised rivers and has sandy bed, the normal depth of scour may be
estimated by the following formula:0

Db 2
dsm = 1  1 / 3
 f 
dsm = Mean depth of scour in m
Db = design discharge for foundation per meter width at effective linear waterway
f = Silt Factor
The silt factor f as per geotech borelog data are as follows:

Hydrology Report

7061434 M/s GIL-SIL JV EDFCC | Revision No. 0 | December 2015 Page | 12

Hydrology Report

As per Employer’s Requirement: CI.3.3 A of part 2 Volume – 4, maximum silt factor shall be taken as 1.0.

The maximum depth of scour below the Highest Flood Level (HFL) for the design of piers (dsmp) and
abutments (dsma), having individual foundations without any floor protection are as follows:

7061434 M/s GIL-SIL JV EDFCC | Revision No. 0 | December 2015 Page | 13

Hydrology Report

In the vicinity of pier: dsmp = A x Dsm

In the vicinity of abutment: dsma = A x Dsm
Where the value of A is given by the table below:

Type of stream A

In a straight reach 1.25

At the moderate rate conditions along aprons of guide bund 1.50

At a severe bend 1.75

At a right angle bend or at nose of piers 2.00

In severe swirls, e.g. against mole head of guide bund 2.50
