(Most of these rules can be applied to

quizzes, worksheets and study guides.)

The numbering of pages starts from the first page of the exam proper. The cover page and the
blank page after it are not numbered AND not added to the total number of pages (see cover
page).

When the exam is ready, convert the cover page and the body of the exam into pdf separately;
then, merge the two pdfs in one using https://www.ilovepdf.com/word_to_pdf or any other
website. If you consider this way of avoiding numbering of the first 2 pages difficult, ask Mr
Anas to teach you his way.

The font for the exam tasks and texts is Times New Roman 12 (like here).

If a task, text or part has a title, you can use any other readable font of 14 to 18 size.

All the tasks and titles must be in bold fonts. Underlining or italics are also allowed in tasks and
titles, especially if you need to indicate a certain word or phrase. E.g.:
What different meanings of the word fish does Shakespeare use to create a pun?
or
What different meanings of the word fish does Shakespeare use to create a pun?
However, NOT as follows:
What different meanings of the word fish does Shakespeare use to create a pun?
If you insist on writing your tasks in bold italics, un-italicize these words and phrases.
What different meanings of the word fish does Shakespeare use to create a pun?

To write question stems in MCQs in bold, italics or normal is the matter of teacher’s taste.

When numbering questions, tasks or parts in English, do not add hyphens or dashes after the
digits or letters.
YES SO-SO NOOOOOOO
1. How… 1) How… (1) How… 1 How… 1- How… 1 – How…
2. What… 2) What… (2) What… 2 What… 2- What… 2 – What…
3. Why… 3) Why… (3) Why… 3 Why… 3- Why… 3 – Why…
A. Yes A) Yes (A) Yes A Yes A- Yes A – Yes
B. No B) No (B) No B No B- No B – No
If your exam is in Arabic or Turkish, stick to the punctuational conventions of those languages.

When writing exams in Latin characters, do not forget to start EVERY sentence with a capital
letter and end it in any form of final punctuation: a full stop, a question mark or – in rare cases –
an exclamation mark.

Also, do not allow the options of MCQs to be on a different (next) page, divided from their
question stems: both the question stem and the option have to be on the same page. If it is not
possible, send the entire question – both the stem and the options – to the following page by
clicking LAYOUT on the toolbar above and by choosing BREAKS after that.

If you expect the students to write their answers as sentences or essays, do not forget to provide
them with some writing space.
Either like this:
______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________
Or like this:

Whichever way of organizing the writing space you choose, it will be better if you make the lines
not black but of any lighter colour, so that even if you print the exam out black and white, the
lines will not look black (this blue, for example, will be a light shade of gray), which will make it
easier for you to read the answers later.

If you need to insert a visual aid into your exam, use the pictures of high resolution, with as clear
labels as possible. Do not use any visuals with watermarks – they look ugly.

If you need your exams to be printed in colour, include the word COLOUR (with or without U)
in the name of the pdf file you send for printing, e.g.:
GR 7 AB GEOGRAPHY COLOUR
To avoid unnecessary questions, add BW to the names of your black and white exams:
GR 8AB LITERATURE BW
Otherwise, do not ask the people responsible for the printing process why the maps in your
geography exams are all black and impossible to read.

Do not expect to prepare all your exams the night before the exam date. Before the exam is
printed, it is to be peer-edited. The peer-editor is as responsible for any mistakes, errors or typos
in the exam paper as the teacher him/herself; in case the HOD does not insist on peer-checking
procedure within his/her department, he/she is held responsible for the mistakes first, then the
teacher.

Now, remove these notes and use this form to write your exam.
