Statistical Data
Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, dear learners, can continue
your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions, exercises, and
discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step as
you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM. This
will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you needto ask
your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson. At
the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-checkyour learning.
Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you will be honest
in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teachers are also provided to
our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best help
you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of this
SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercise and tests. Read the
instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks in
this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

What is It

DRAWING CONCLUSIONS FROM GRAPHICS AND TABULAR

PRESENTATIONS

Statistics has a lot to do with our lives, it provides us with systematic way of collecting,
organizing, presenting, and interpreting data. There is statistics in everything that we do.

Data is initially collected from a given source, whether they are experiments, surveys, or
observation, and is presented in one of the three methods.

➢ Textual Method - acquires information through reading the gathered data.

➢ Tabular Method - provides a more precise, systematic and orderly presentation of
data in rows or columns.
➢ Graphical Method - the utilization of graphs is most effective method of visually
presenting statistical results or findings.

Different Types of Graphs

▪ Bar graph - is like a histogram except that its bars are separated. This uses
parallel bars, either horizontal or vertical, to represent counts for several
categories. One bar is used for each category with the length of the bar
representing the count for that one category.
▪ Pictograph - is the representation of data using images. Pictographs
represents the frequency of data while using symbols or images that are
relevant to the data. This is one of the simplest ways to represent statistical
data.
▪ Pie graph - is a circle divided into sectors proportional to the frequencies. It
shows how a part of something relates to the whole. It is important to define
what the whole represents.
▪ Line graph - shows trends in data clearly. This displays data which are
collected over a period of time to show how the data change at regular intervals.
